Easter Island (Hanga Roa)

Easter Island has no pier, so your ship anchors off Hanga Roa and the tenders decide the day — if the swell lets them run. Treat the landing as a maybe, not a promise, and count the park ticket and the guide as part of the price.

Easter Island (Hanga Roa) in brief

Easter Island is a rare call and a fragile one — it sits more than 3,700 km (about 2,300 miles) off the Chilean mainland, and ships reach it on South Pacific crossings and world cruises, not on a routine loop.

The draw is Rapa Nui itself: the moai, the quarry where they were carved, a crater-rim village and a beach. Each of them is a drive from the landing, not a walk.

The ship anchors; you tender.

There is no cruise pier at Hanga Roa, so ships anchor offshore and carry guests in by tender. Tenders usually land at Hanga Piko, a small cove just south of town, though the main harbor is the alternative — and the sea that morning picks which one.

The swell can win.

Tendering depends on wind, swell direction and wave period, and a flat-looking sea can still be too rough at the water line. Tenders get delayed, the call gets shortened, and a landing can be cancelled outright. The ship’s timetable decides, not yours.

So build a plan that survives a late start. Assume you might lose an hour or the whole day, and read the cancellation terms before you book anything.

The big sites need a vehicle and a guide.

Hanga Roa’s waterfront, church, shops and craft market fill a few hours on foot. Rano Raraku sits about 11 miles (18 km) away and Ahu Tongariki about 12 miles (20 km), so both need wheels.

Most park sites also require a guide accredited by Ma’u Henua, so a rental car buys you the drive, not the entry.

Our Easter Island shore excursion guide sorts the ship tours from the independent options, so read it before you pay for anything.

Sources differ: one says under 15 minutes from either landing, another roughly 20 to 30 from Hanga Piko. Plan on the longer figure.

This is the part you can do on foot. Tahai, an ahu site, lies north of the center.

What's nearby, broadly

Hanga Piko landing Hanga Roa town and craft market Ahu Tahai Rano Raraku quarry Ahu Tongariki Anakena Beach Orongo and Rano Kau Ahu Akivi Te Pito Kura

The island is small, but “nearby” still means a drive, not a stroll — the quarry and the long platform at Tongariki are 11 and 12 miles (18 and 20 km) from town.

Orongo, the ceremonial village, perches on the rim of the Rano Kau crater, and Anakena Beach gives the island its swimming stop.

Rano Raraku holds about 400 moai in various stages of carving. Tongariki was rebuilt between 1992 and 1996 after the 1960 tsunami scattered its fallen statues — a restoration, not an original.

Touching or walking on a moai or an ahu is strictly forbidden, so stay on the marked paths and do what your guide says.

Commonly reached from

Easter Island is a mid-ocean stop. Most calls are South Pacific crossings between Chile and French Polynesia, plus world cruises. Our Valparaíso cruise port guide covers the Chilean end, and the Papeete cruise port guide covers Tahiti on the far side. The Callao guide picks up the Peruvian coast. The wider region lives on our South America & Antarctica hub.

Practical notes

Current as of October 29, 2026 Review periodically

Expect the tender to be the weak link.

CruiseMapper says swell can delay tendering, shorten the visit or prevent a landing. One operator selling Holland America tours keeps 50 percent of the fare if the tenders cannot reach shore and the tour cannot run — so ask your line how it handles a cancelled landing, and whether any tour money comes back.

Buy the park ticket, or check that your tour includes it.

GoChile reports that the Ma’u Henua community, which runs Rapa Nui National Park, announced on May 19, 2025 that international adults pay US$100 and children US$40 from October 1, 2025. The ticket is valid for 10 consecutive days, and Rano Raraku and Orongo allow one entry each, so you can’t return.

An older Chile Travel post says US$80, which predates the change. Two operator pages also print US$100. We could not read the park’s own site, so confirm the price for your date.

Some tours include the ticket and some do not — it is a line item, not a given. One operator selling Holland America tours says the fee is paid in cash to the park when you step off the tender.

Plan on a guide.

Entry to the main park sites requires a local guide accredited by Ma’u Henua, or a place on a tour that supplies one. One operator lists Tahai, Hanga Roa town and Anakena Beach as open without a guide, but treat that as a question to ask, not a rule to rely on.

Leave a margin for the last tender.

CruisePorts.co suggests being back in Hanga Roa at least 90 minutes before the last tender, while an operator selling Holland America tours promises a drop-off at least an hour before it. Take the longer margin — a late van is a bad bet on a day when the tenders may already be stretched.

Carry cash.

The currency is the Chilean peso. Larger hotels, restaurants and tour companies take Visa and MasterCard, according to CruiseSheet, but markets and small shops want cash.

ATMs in town can be unreliable, and some businesses take US dollars at a poor rate — so bring pesos or cash dollars from the ship, not a hope of a machine.

Paperwork for US citizens.

Chile asks for no visa for tourism, and the U.S. Embassy says you receive a Tourist Card for up to 90 days, and your passport must be valid for the whole stay.

Rapa Nui adds its own rules for people who fly in — including an online entry form (the FUI) and a 30-day limit on the island. The pages we read do not say how those apply to ship passengers, so ask your line before you sail.

Read the advisory.

The U.S. Embassy in Chile shows Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, for Chile, citing crime, unrest and health. It does not mention Easter Island, and we could not open the State Department page itself, so check it before you sail.

Pack for sun, wind and a quick shower.

Highs run roughly 80 to 82°F (27–28°C) from January to March and about 75 to 79°F in November and December. Rain falls year-round and the weather can change within hours, so bring sunscreen, a hat and a light rain layer.

Easter Island (Hanga Roa) FAQ

Do ships dock at Easter Island?

No. Ships anchor off Hanga Roa and tender guests in, usually to Hanga Piko, a small cove just south of town, and sometimes to the main harbor.

Can the landing be cancelled?

Yes. CruiseMapper says swell can delay the tenders, shorten the visit or prevent a landing, even in fair weather. Ask your line about refunds for tours that do not run.

How far is the landing from Hanga Roa?

Sources differ. CruiseSheet puts the center under a 15 minute walk from either landing, while CruiseMapper says roughly 20 to 30 minutes from Hanga Piko.

Plan on the longer figure — and leave extra time for the walk back, since tenders run on the ship’s clock.

Do I need a ticket for Rapa Nui National Park?

For the main sites, yes. International adults pay US$100 and children US$40 from October 1, 2025, valid for 10 consecutive days, according to GoChile, and Rano Raraku and Orongo allow one entry each. Check whether your tour includes it before you pay twice — a ticket, not a tour, is what the park sells.

Do I need a guide?

Most park sites require a guide accredited by Ma’u Henua, or a tour that provides one. Renting a car does not change that — the guide, not the vehicle, gets you in.

Do US citizens need a visa for Easter Island?

Chile requires no visa for tourism — U.S. citizens receive a Tourist Card for up to 90 days, per the U.S. Embassy.

Rapa Nui has extra rules for air arrivals, including a 30-day limit, so ask your line how they apply to a cruise call.

How far are Rano Raraku and Ahu Tongariki?

Rano Raraku is about 11 miles (18 km), roughly 25 minutes by vehicle, and Tongariki is about 12 miles (20 km), roughly 30 to 40 minutes by car.

Which lines call at Easter Island?

Schedules we checked show Holland America, Seabourn, Silversea, Lindblad, Crystal, MSC and Phoenix Reisen ships between October 2026 and April 2027, and Princess lists the port on world cruise segments. Dates move, so check your sailing.
