Callao in brief
Callao is Lima’s seaport, and for cruise passengers it’s mostly a gateway, not a destination.
Lima itself is the draw. The colonial center, the Larco Museum, Miraflores on its cliffs over the Pacific — and the food, which is reason enough on its own.
The ship berths in a cargo port.
In 2024–25, calls used the Terminal Norte Multipropósito, the north pier run by APM Terminals Callao. It took 25 cruise calls between November 2024 and April 2025, from expedition ships like Fram to Majestic Princess at about 330 meters.
For 2026–27, your line’s port notes have the final word on the berth.
The port is secured and industrial, and it isn’t a place to sightsee on foot. Don’t plan on walking out into Callao — plan on a vehicle.
The drive is the day’s big variable.
Expect about 35 to 60 minutes to the historic center, about 45 to 75 to Miraflores and about 60 to 90 to Barranco. Weekday traffic stretches all three.
So the clock matters more here than in most ports. Build in 60 to 90 minutes of slack before all-aboard if you’re going into Lima on your own.
Many calls are overnight, and some voyages end here.
In January 2027, Volendam and Zaandam both arrive at 10:00 and stay until 18:00 the next day. Oceania Insignia and Seabourn Quest overnight too, and Carnival Firenze does a single day, 07:00 to 20:00.
Several sailings finish in Callao — Oceania’s Miami-to-Lima run, Crystal Serenity from San Diego and a Seabourn segment up from Panama. If yours does, the city is your first stop on land, not a port call.
Our Callao and Lima shore excursion guide sorts the city tours, the museum and ruins days and the sea-lion boat. Read it before you book anything.
Off the ship: a working port, then a drive
APM Terminals’ Terminal Norte Multipropósito handled the 2024–25 calls. No tender — you walk off at the pier.
The port is secured and industrial. Leave by shuttle, transfer, tour coach or pre-booked car — not on foot.
Some lines run a transfer; some don’t. Ask whether it only clears the port gate or actually reaches a sightseeing district.
About 35 to 60 minutes by road, longer in heavy traffic. Plaza San Martín and the San Francisco catacombs are here.
About 45 to 75 minutes. Clifftop parks over the Pacific, and Huaca Pucllana in among the streets.
The longest of the common runs, just south of Miraflores. Go there with time to spare, not on a tight call.
What's nearby, broadly
Lima spreads a long way along the coast, so “nearby” means a drive. The historic center sits inland of the port, with the Larco Museum in Pueblo Libre and the Magic Water Circuit in Parque de la Reserva.
Miraflores and Barranco run south along the cliffs, and Pachacamac lies further down the old Panamericana Sur at Lurín.
Callao has sights of its own. The Real Felipe fortress, the La Punta peninsula and the boats out to the Palomino Islands are the short-hop options from the port — useful when traffic rules out the city.
Commonly reached from
Callao is a turnaround as well as a call. Ships coming down the Pacific coast from the Panama Canal stop here — see our Panama City cruise port guide and the Guayaquil guide for Ecuador, the Galapagos gateway. Heading south, longer South America voyages carry on toward Chile; our Valparaíso cruise port guide covers the Santiago end. Lines in the January 2027 schedule include Holland America, Oceania, Seabourn, Carnival and Crystal. The wider region lives on our South America & Antarctica hub.

Read the advisory first.
The State Department rates Peru at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, in an advisory dated September 4, 2026. Callao isn’t named in it.
It does describe petty theft and violent crime, even in daylight, with the risk higher at night. Rare express kidnappings get a mention too — victims driven to a bank and made to withdraw cash.
Don’t hail a taxi on the street.
The advisory says travelers have been robbed after flagging down unknown cabs. Use a ride app, a taxi booked by phone or a car your hotel or tour arranges — a known driver, not a stranger at the curb.
Ask the line where vehicles may pick you up at the port, and settle the return trip before you leave. No fare is published for the ride from the berth.
Carry some soles.
The currency is the Peruvian sol. Cards work in most places and ATMs are easy to find — use one inside a mall or bank, not mid-ride.
Small sums still want cash. The Magic Water Circuit charges S/5 at the gate, and the Palomino Islands conservation tax is 11 soles on top of a boat fare.
Watch for Monday and Tuesday closures.
The ship tours to Pachacamac don’t run on Mondays at Holland America or Seabourn. Huaca Pucllana’s site museum opens Wednesday to Monday, so Tuesday is out.
Paperwork for US citizens.
No visa for tourist stays up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid at least six months after you enter Peru, with a blank page for the stamp — without that, you can be turned away.
Sun in the cruise season, fog the rest of the year.
December to April brings sunny, warm days. From May to November the coast sits under garúa, a thick sea mist, and winter days run about 16 to 20°C.
Rain barely registers either way — Lima rarely sees more than about 50 mm in a year. Pack sunscreen in January and a layer for the evening.
