Guayaquil, the Night Before the Galápagos

Your Galápagos ship doesn’t leave from Guayaquil. It waits on Baltra or San Cristóbal, and Guayaquil is where you sleep, then catch the flight out. On this page the “terminal” is the GYE domestic departures area. Get the morning right and the cruise takes care of itself.

Six ways into this guide

01

In brief

Guayaquil is Ecuador’s big Pacific city, and for most of the Galápagos it’s a bed and a boarding pass. Flights to the islands leave from the mainland, from here or Quito — ABG’s rules recognize those two airports as the authorized ones for passengers, cargo and luggage bound for Galápagos.

So the “terminal” on this page is the GYE domestic departures area. That’s where you validate the Transit Control Card, get your bags inspected, and check in for Baltra or San Cristóbal.

The money, in US dollars, since that’s Ecuador’s currency. The Transit Control Card is US$20, per Ecoventura and Ecuador’s tourism ministry. The Galápagos National Park fee, paid on arrival in the islands, is US$200 for foreign adults and US$100 for children under 12, per the Consejo de Gobierno’s Resolution 002, in force since August 1, 2024. Check whether your line includes either — Celebrity’s 7-night cruise includes both.

Then the advisory. travel.state.gov rates Ecuador Level 2, exercise increased caution (August 18, 2026), and lists some areas at Level 4, do not travel. In Guayaquil those are the Nueva Prosperina and Pascuales districts and everything south of Portete de Tarqui Avenue; Durán, across the river, is on the list too. By our reading of their addresses, none of our ten hotels is in those areas — but check your own plans against the advisory. It also notes that medical care in the Galápagos is very limited.

Who starts a Galápagos trip through Guayaquil

Deployments change every season, so this roster is dated and sourced. In Guayaquil, the question isn’t which ship — it’s which airport your line flies from.

Current as of October 18, 2026

Checked against each line’s own pages on October 18, 2026. The short version: none of the line pages we read includes a Guayaquil hotel night and the island flight in its base fare. Ecoventura flies its guests on Avianca from GYE or Quito to San Cristóbal on Sundays and requires a night in one of the two cities first. Its GYE–Galápagos–GYE fare is US$525 for an adult in standard season, priced separately on its FAQ, and its two-night pre-cruise package at Hotel del Parque, with transfers and a Hacienda La Danesa tour, ran from US$865 per person in 2025. Metropolitan Touring says you can fly from Quito or Guayaquil and it will book the flights; flights and park fees are typically separate. Lindblad’s Exploring Galápagos and Galápagos Escape both start in Quito now, with flights extra, though its brochure offers a Guayaquil stay at Hotel del Parque on Galápagos Escape. Celebrity’s 10-night-plus cruisetours include two Quito hotel nights and the Quito–Baltra flight; the page doesn’t mention Guayaquil. Silversea moved Silver Origin’s charter to Quito–San Cristóbal from July 2025, dropping the old Guayaquil layover, per Cruise Industry News.

The morning at GYE, step by step

The Galápagos morning has more steps than a normal domestic flight. Ecoventura says be at the airport two hours before departure; Metropolitan Touring advises about three hours because of the Galápagos procedures. Take the longer one.

First, the Transit Control Card. Fill it in online first — the Consejo de Gobierno has issued it online since May 29, 2025, per Primicias — then show it with your passport and island tickets at the Consejo’s counter before airline check-in. It’s US$20, per Ecoventura. Some lines prepay it for you.

Then the bags. Ecoventura says your bags are inspected before check-in. The inspection exists to stop prohibited, infested or restricted items reaching the islands, per ABG. Packaged food needs a sanitary registration and its dates, per Ecuador’s tourism ministry, so check ABG’s list before you pack snacks. Adults 18 and over also fill in an online sworn declaration up to 48 hours before the flight, per Ecoventura, and show its QR code when they land.

Then the airline. Celebrity and Metropolitan Touring both put the limit at one 23 kg checked bag and a 10 kg carry-on. Pack to it, not to your international ticket.

05

Parking, in short

A Galápagos cruise doesn’t start here, so nobody publishes long-stay parking. GYE charges US$1.40 an hour, per Tagsa via Expreso, and that adds up fast over a week in the islands.

One hotel prints a rate: the Sheraton charges checked-out guests US$18.30 a night in its parking tower. If you’re driving in from elsewhere in Ecuador, start there.

06

Getting here

GYE sits about 5 km northeast of downtown, per an unofficial airport guide, in one terminal for domestic and international flights. Lindblad’s older sell sheet says most international flights land in Guayaquil late in the evening — so you sleep in the city and fly to the islands the next morning.
