Getting There · Guayaquil

Guayaquil Airport, and the Flight to the Galápagos

GYE does two jobs on a Galápagos trip. It’s where your international flight lands, and where the island flight leaves the next morning — from the same terminal, per an unofficial guide. The night in between is the part you plan.

Landing on flight day?

The short answer

Fly into José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport (GYE). Sleep in Guayaquil, then come back to the same terminal for the island flight. Ecoventura requires that night; for everyone else it’s the safe call.

The airport doesn’t publish taxi fares, per one unofficial guide. Another puts the official airport taxi at about US$5 to 8 to downtown. Six of our ten hotels publish a free airport shuttle, so check yours first.

The morning has three steps before you board: the US$20 Transit Control Card, the bag inspection, and the airline. Allow two to three hours.

Use the hotel shuttle if

  • Your hotel publishes one; six of our ten do
  • You’re carrying a week of Galápagos bags

Take a taxi or app if

  • Your hotel has no shuttle, like DoubleTree
  • You land outside the shuttle’s hours

The Ride

What the ride to the hotel costs

The airport publishes no taxi fares, so most rows come from an unofficial guide. Treat them as rough.

Travelers
Official airport taxi to downtown, low end, about US$5 per car—
Official airport taxi to downtown, high end, about US$8 per car—
Uber or inDrive to the Malecón, high end, about US$6 per car—
Metrovía, US$0.30 per person with a rechargeable card—
Courtyard’s hotel car, US$7.50 one way (published by the hotel)—

One way, all in US dollars. Taxi, app and Metrovía figures from Aeropuertos del Mundo (updated August 25, 2026), an unofficial guide; the Courtyard fare is the hotel’s own. None is an official airport tariff.

Six of our ten hotels publish a free airport shuttle, so the cheapest ride may already be in your room rate. Book it when you book the room — most say reservation required.

Flight-Day Landing

Landing on flight day? Check your timing

Put the island flight’s departure in the “Galápagos flight departs” box. The rows below are each source’s airport advice, counted back from that time.

  • Ecoventura's airport timeBe at the Quito or Guayaquil airport two hours before departure, per Ecoventura.—
  • Metropolitan Touring's adviceAt least three hours before the flight, because of the Galápagos procedures, per Metropolitan Touring.—
  • Our buffer for a same-day connectionOur estimate: add an hour on top for immigration and your bags after an international landing.—

A same-morning connection from an international flight can work on paper. One delay undoes it, and Ecoventura requires the night before anyway. Fly in the day before.

A night in Guayaquil first

Land the night before. The island flight leaves in the morning.

We ranked ten hotels in Guayaquil, from the beds beside the runway to a bell-tower spa in Samborondón. Tell us the flight and the line, and we’ll pick the night that fits.

Coming Home

The morning you’re back

Your island flight lands back at GYE, and Ecoventura says book an evening flight home at least three hours after your scheduled arrival. Enter both times.

There are no partner links inside this planner. It’s built only from what the lines, Ecuador’s Galápagos authorities, each hotel or its named listing, and the two unofficial airport guides we name publish. The taxi and app fares are unofficial.

Bags and Entry

Bags, entry and the island flight

Ecuador’s advisory sits at Level 2, exercise increased caution, per travel.state.gov (August 18, 2026), with Level 4 areas in parts of Guayaquil. Use hotel shuttles or the official airport taxi.

The island flight is where bags get strict. One 23 kg checked bag and a 10 kg carry-on, per Celebrity and Metropolitan Touring. Ecoventura says bags are inspected before check-in, and ABG will also inspect and seal luggage at hotels and VIP lounges for a fee — about US$100 on average, anywhere from US$0 to 350 depending on the number of bags, per its gob.ec page.

No left-luggage service is published at GYE that we found. Ask your hotel to hold what stays behind. For the morning steps, see our Guayaquil guide.

Fly In Early

Flying in the day before

One night in Guayaquil takes the flight risk off the morning. Ecoventura requires it; the others don’t build it in for Guayaquil, so book it yourself.

Three of our ten sit within about 1.1 km of the terminal by our map, and six publish a free shuttle.
