Kochi Shore Excursions: A Castle, a Bonito Lunch, and the Beach the Shuttle Doesn’t Reach

Kochi’s berth is a cargo wharf about 25 minutes from downtown, but municipal shuttles to Harimayabashi have run on past calls, which makes the city a do-it-yourself day when one is offered. Shuttle service and fares vary by call, so confirm yours with the ship. The castle and Hirome Market need nothing more than that bus and your feet. Katsurahama is the stop that changes the math — close to the ship, off the shuttle’s route, and the reason the coach tours sell. Book one for the beach. For the castle, keep your money for lunch.

Kochi in 30 seconds: shuttle downtown, castle and Hirome on foot, a coach for the beach

Known for
One of Japan’s 12 original castle keeps, Hirome Market’s seared bonito, a Sunday street market more than 300 years old, and the Sakamoto Ryoma statue at Katsurahama.
Strongest excursion styles
Independent for the castle, Hirome and the Sunday Market. A ship coach for Katsurahama, Ryugado Cave and anything farther out.
Booking on your own
Easy downtown, thanks to the trams and a shuttle where offered. Harder for the coast, where taxi fares aren’t published and the MY-YU bus can fill up.
The one thing to know
In principle, the shuttle’s last run back leaves about an hour before departure, per the prefecture’s contract. Plan your day around that time, not the all-aboard.
02

Quick picks for a Kochi port day

Three of the six picks start with the shuttle, where offered — the paid ones are mostly about getting to the coast, and that tells you where the distance really bites.

03

Kochi excursions, from the shuttle to the private car

Ranked by one question: what does the tour get you that the shuttle and a tram ticket can’t?

Downtown, very little. The coast is where a coach, or a car, starts to earn it.

Wharf, shuttle and money detail is on our Kochi cruise port guide. If your sailing comes in from Kansai, our Osaka and Kobe shore excursion guide covers the day before.

DIY · shuttle (if offered) and a tram

Kochi Castle and Hirome Market on your own

  • Castle ¥420 for adults
  • Castle 9:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:30
  • Hirome from 10:00 (9:00 Sundays)
  • Most Hirome stalls cash only

This is the Kochi day, and a shuttle, where your call has one, does most of the work — you supply the legs.

If a municipal shuttle runs on your call, ride it from the wharf to the Harimayabashi bus terminal. From there, Kochi-ke, the prefecture’s tourism site, times the walk to Hirome Market at about 20 minutes, and the castle sits a short walk beyond it.

The keep is 18.5 meters tall. A fire in 1727 took most of the castle but the Otemon gate; ANA dates the rebuild to 1753, Princess the tower to 1749. Admission is ¥420 for anyone 18 and over.

Then eat. Hirome packs roughly 60 to 70 stalls around communal tables — you order at any counter and share the long tables. Kochi-ke’s market guide points you to katsuo no tataki, the seared bonito, at several stalls — start there, not with the souvenirs.

Time commitment
Our estimate: three to four hours in town, plus about 25 minutes each way on the shuttle.
Getting there
Shuttle to Harimayabashi if offered, then walk or take a tram to Kochijo-mae.
Suits
First-timers, budget days, food-first travelers, couples.
Ship or independent
Independent. A castle ticket and a market lunch don’t need a guide.

Why it's worth considering

If your call has a free shuttle, this day costs a castle ticket and lunch — fares vary by call, so confirm any charge.

You get the two things Kochi is best known for at your own pace, not a tour’s.

The catch

The climb is real. Princess describes about 500 meters uphill and more than 200 steps to the keep, and you may be asked to take off your shoes inside.

Hirome is mostly cash. Bring yen, because a card won’t buy you much at the stalls.

Verify before you book

  • Whether a shuttle is running on your date, any charge, the pickup spot and when the last one leaves
  • Castle closing time, since last entry is 16:30
  • Yen in small notes for the market

Sundays only · street market

The Sunday Market from Otemon Gate

  • Every Sunday
  • About 1 km long
  • More than 300 years old
  • Closed Jan 1–2 and Aug 10–12

If your ship calls on a Sunday, this goes to the top of the list.

The Japan Tourism Agency describes about 300 vendors stretched roughly 1 km from the castle’s Otemon Gate to the tram streets at Harimaya. Shikoku Tourism lists it from about 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. and counts closer to 500 stalls.

It has run for more than 300 years. The handy part is the line it draws — it runs from near Harimaya, where the shuttle stops, to the castle gate, so the walk to the keep becomes the market.

Graze, then climb the castle, then finish at Hirome. On a Sunday, Hirome opens at 9:00, an hour earlier than the rest of the week.

Time commitment
Our estimate: an hour or two at the stalls, more if you pair it with the castle.
Getting there
The shuttle to Harimayabashi, then walk the stalls toward Otemon Gate.
Suits
Repeat visitors, families, budget days, anyone who likes to browse.
Ship or independent
Independent. You walk it and buy what looks good.

Why it's worth considering

It costs nothing to walk, and it’s on the route you’d take anyway.

Some 300 vendors by the tourism agency’s count, on a street market that predates the cruise trade by centuries — a local scene, not a staged one.

The catch

Sunday only. The rest of the week, the street is just a street.

The shuttle starts about an hour after arrival, and Shikoku Tourism has the market winding down around 3 p.m. — on a late-morning arrival, go there first.

Verify before you book

  • That your call falls on a Sunday outside the closure dates
  • Market hours on the day
  • Small yen notes

Ship excursion · 4-hour coach

Kochi Castle, the Ryoma museum and Katsurahama

  • 4 hours
  • From $164.95 on Princess
  • Rated strenuous
  • About 2 hours of walking

This is the tour to buy if you want the castle and the beach in one morning.

Princess’s version runs 4 hours from $164.95. Its published timing gives you 1 hour 20 minutes at the castle, half an hour at the Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum and 55 minutes at Katsurahama and the statue.

The geography explains why it sells. The beach is about 15 minutes from the ship, but the published shuttle route goes downtown instead — and a coach links the two without a second plan.

Read the effort rating, though — Princess calls it strenuous, not easy.

Time commitment
About 4 hours.
Getting there
The ship’s coach from the wharf; the drive to the castle is about 30 minutes.
Suits
First-timers, short calls, minimal-stress days.
Ship or independent
Ship. It joins the castle and the beach in one booking.

Why it's worth considering

Castle, museum and statue in one block of time, with the return to the ship built in.

It’s the shorter of Princess’s two Katsurahama tours.

The catch

Princess lists about 2 hours of walking outdoors and more than 200 steps to the keep.

There’s no Hirome stop in the published timing — lunch is on you, later.

DIY · taxi or sightseeing bus

Katsurahama and the Ryoma statue on your own

  • About 15 minutes from the berth by car
  • Statue and base about 13.5 m
  • Museum ¥500, ¥900 in special exhibitions
  • Swimming prohibited

Katsurahama sits about 5.6 km from the berth, and it’s where Kochi keeps its hero.

Sakamoto Ryoma was born in Kochi in 1835 and helped negotiate the alliance between the Choshu and Satsuma clans that, japan-guide says, helped end Japan’s feudal age in 1868. His statue and its pedestal stand about 13.5 meters together, by Princess’s figure.

The memorial museum on the hill opens 9:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:30, and japan-guide.com lists no closing days. Admission is ¥500, or ¥900 during special exhibitions.

Getting there is the puzzle, not the sightseeing. A taxi from the wharf is the short hop, but no fare is published. The MY-YU sightseeing bus serves Katsurahama from the station side of town. Visit Kochi lists its Katsurahama ticket at ¥1,500 for adults; japan-guide prints ¥1,300 and a 2024 article ¥1,000, so treat the prefecture’s figure as current and check at the counter.

Time commitment
Our estimate: about two hours on the ground, plus the ride.
Getting there
Taxi from the wharf, about 15 minutes; or MY-YU from town, roughly 50 minutes to an hour by the guides we read.
Suits
Repeat visitors, history fans, anyone who’s seen the castle already.
Ship or independent
Independent, if you’re comfortable negotiating a taxi. Otherwise the ship’s coach tour covers it.

Why it's worth considering

It’s close to the ship, and the beach and museum together make a tidy half-day — if the ride works out.

It’s the closest sightseeing area to the berth, by the tourism agency’s count — less ride, more time on the shore.

The catch

Swimming is prohibited because of strong currents and large waves. This is a beach for looking at, not for getting in.

Visit Kochi advises buying MY-YU tickets ahead and warns you may not board if the bus is full.

Verify before you book

  • A taxi estimate before you set off, and how you’ll get back
  • MY-YU times against your all-aboard

Ship excursion · 5-hour-plus coach

Ryugado Cave and Katsurahama

  • 5.25 hours
  • From $179.95 on Princess
  • Japanese-guide version from $134.95
  • Check the effort level

For a second visit, or for anyone who’d rather go underground than climb a castle.

Princess runs it at 5 hours 15 minutes from $179.95. It pairs Ryugado Cave, which Princess’s port guide treats as a farther-afield option, with a stop at Katsurahama.

It’s the one ship tour on this page that leaves the castle out entirely — that’s the point of it.

A cheaper version runs with a Japanese-speaking guide, from $134.95 — read the title before you click.

Time commitment
About 5 hours 15 minutes.
Getting there
The ship’s coach from the wharf.
Suits
Repeat visitors, families with kids who’d enjoy a cave.
Ship or independent
Ship. The cave isn’t on the shuttle’s route.

Why it's worth considering

A sight you can’t reach on the shuttle route, with the beach thrown in.

It leaves you time back aboard, or for a late Hirome run if your ship stays.

The catch

The listing we read gives no effort rating for this one, so ask about stairs and footing in the cave.

At just over five hours, it uses most of a short call — plan lunch aboard or late.

Verify before you book

  • Which language the guide speaks
  • Price on your own line
  • The walking involved inside the cave

Third-party · private car from the port

A private car tour with a licensed guide

  • Listed at 6 hours
  • From about $395 a person on Viator
  • Port pickup at Kochi New Port
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours

If you want to pick your own stops, this is the third-party route.

Viator’s Kochi Shore Excursion Private Customizable Car Tour picks you up at Kochi Shin Port. You choose your stops from a list that includes the castle, Hirome, the Sunday Market, Katsurahama’s Ryugu Shrine and Ryugado Cave — the listing says two to three in one place and three to four in another, so ask.

It’s private — a van takes up to seven, a car up to two. The listing offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Each stop is marked admission not included — budget for tickets on top, and confirm with the operator.

Time commitment
About 6 hours, per Viator’s Kochi Prefecture listing.
Getting there
Pickup and drop-off at the port.
Suits
Families or small groups, limited-mobility travelers, couples who want control.
Ship or independent
Either. A private car solves the port’s distance problem, but the ship won’t wait for it.

Why it's worth considering

It joins Katsurahama and downtown, which the shuttle can’t.

A van for up to seven makes the price easier for a family to split, though it’s still per person, not per van.

The catch

At $395.34 a person on the tour page ($405 on Viator’s Kochi listing), it’s more than twice Princess’s 4-hour castle and beach tour.

If the day runs late, the ship sails on its own clock, not the driver’s.

Verify before you book

  • How the per-person price changes with your group size
  • The exact pickup point at the wharf
  • Return time against all-aboard
04

Kochi with the ship or on your own

Downtown, skip the coach

If a shuttle runs, it drops you at Harimayabashi, and the castle, Hirome and the arcades are a walk or a tram ride from there.

A guide adds stories at the castle, not entry. You can buy the ¥420 ticket yourself — at the gate, not through a desk.

For the coast, the coach has the edge

Katsurahama sits about 5.6 km from the wharf, but the shuttle route we found runs to the city instead. That leaves a taxi with no published fare, or a sightseeing bus that can fill up.

Princess’s 4-hour tour folds the beach, the museum and the castle together — and the return is the line’s to plan, not yours.

A private car, if the group is big enough

Viator’s private car starts at about $395 a person and picks you up at the port. Shore Excursions Group’s 6-hour group tour runs $494.99 on sale, and its private version starts at $337.99 a person.

Both cost more than Princess’s half-days. The car makes sense mainly if you want stops the ship doesn’t sell, or a vehicle for your own group.

Short answer

Take the shuttle downtown, climb the castle and eat at Hirome — that’s a strong Kochi day for a ¥420 ticket and lunch. Want Katsurahama too? Book the ship’s 4-hour castle and beach tour, and eat after. On a Sunday, walk the market on the way to the castle.

05

What we’d skip in Kochi, and what to check first

Booking a Japanese-guide tour by accident

Princess lists Japanese-guide versions of several Kochi tours at lower prices — the castle and beach tour drops to $79.95.

Check the title for the guide’s language before you pay — the cheaper fare buys commentary you may not follow.

Oboke Gorge or Cape Muroto on a short call

Princess lists Oboke Gorge at 7 hours and Cape Muroto at 8.5.

On an 8-to-5 call, those eat the whole day. Save them for a long one.

Packing a swimsuit for Katsurahama

Swimming is prohibited there because of strong currents.

Bring walking shoes, not a towel — and keep back from the surf line.

Lingering at Hirome until all-aboard

In principle, the last shuttle back leaves about an hour before departure, and the ride takes about 25 minutes.

Set your alarm by the shuttle time, not the all-aboard — then order the last round.

Expecting to pay by card at the stalls

Most Hirome stalls are cash only, by Kochi-ke’s count.

Carry yen in small notes, not just plastic.

A 6-hour tour that crosses the prefecture

Shore Excursions Group’s group tour packs Kochi Castle, the Shimanto River, Chinkabashi bridge and Cape Ashizuri into 6 hours, at $494.99 on sale.

Ask how long you’d actually spend at each stop before you pay that much.

06

Kochi port logistics: the wharf, the shuttle and the coast

From the ship into town

Ships tie up at the Misato No. 7 wharves of Kochi New Port, where the tourism agency lists a welcome ceremony and tourist information on arrival.

Japan’s transport ministry reported free municipal shuttles on earlier calls in January 2026 and was researching fares. In principle, shuttles run to the Harimayabashi bus terminal starting about an hour after arrival. Shuttle service, routes and fares change from call to call, so ask your ship for the day’s pickup spot, last return and any charge.

Full wharf detail is on our Kochi cruise port guide.

Getting to Katsurahama

From the wharf: about 15 minutes by car.

MY-YU sightseeing bus: ¥1,500 adult Katsurahama ticket, ¥750 child, by the prefecture’s figures. Its tourism site also mentions free trams in a flat-rate area, so confirm what your ticket covers, and buy ahead.

Money

Bring yen. Cards work at many shops and attractions — Hirome’s stalls are the exception.

Kochi Castle is ¥420 for adults; the Ryoma museum is ¥500, or ¥900 during special exhibitions.

Safety and paperwork

The State Department puts Japan at Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, in an advisory dated May 15, 2025, still current on October 28, 2026. Typhoons, mostly summer to fall, are its main seasonal warning.

US citizens don’t need a visa for a short tourist visit. Check your line’s paperwork notes for the call.

07

Which Kochi plan fits you

First-time visitor

Ride the shuttle, climb the castle and eat lunch at Hirome.

It’s the strongest day in the city, and it barely needs planning — just the shuttle time.

The castle and Hirome →

Repeat visitors

Seen the castle? Time it for a Sunday and walk the market from Harimaya to Otemon Gate — a different city from the weekday one.

The Sunday Market →

Budget-conscious

If your call has a free shuttle, the castle is the main cost at ¥420. Lunch will likely cost you more than the sightseeing — a good problem to have.

The castle and Hirome →

Minimal stress

Let the coach link the castle, the museum and the beach, with the ride back to the ship built in — one booking, not three plans.

The castle and beach tour →

Limited mobility

Princess rates its castle tour strenuous. A private car lets you choose flatter stops, like Hirome and the beach — confirm the vehicle and walking with Viator first.

A private car from the port →

08

Kochi shore excursion questions

Do I need a shore excursion in Kochi?

For the castle and Hirome, no. A shuttle, if your call has one, reaches Harimayabashi, and both sights are close from there.

A tour mainly helps with Katsurahama and Ryugado Cave.

How long is the Kochi Castle and Katsurahama tour?

Princess lists it at 4 hours, from $164.95, with time at the castle, the Ryoma museum and the beach.

How much is Kochi Castle?

¥420 for visitors 18 and over. It opens 9:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:30.

What time does Hirome Market open?

10:00 Monday to Saturday and 9:00 on Sundays, closing at 23:00, per Shikoku Tourism.

Can I swim at Katsurahama?

No. Swimming is prohibited because of strong currents.

How tall is the Sakamoto Ryoma statue?

About 13.5 meters with its pedestal, per Princess. It stands at Katsurahama.

When is the Kochi Sunday Market?

Every Sunday, except January 1 and 2 and August 10 to 12. Shikoku Tourism lists it from about 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Are Kochi excursions wheelchair accessible?

Princess rates its castle tour strenuous, and the keep has more than 200 steps. Ask the excursion desk about alternatives before you book.
