Kochi in brief
Kochi is Shikoku’s busiest cruise port, by the regional transport bureau’s own description. The prefecture expects about 105 calls at Kochi Port in its 2026 fiscal year.
That doesn’t make it a cruise district. The berth is a working cargo wharf, and the Japan Tourism Agency lists four cruise positions, Misato No. 7-1 through 7-4, with a main berth that opened in May 2014.
The city is a ride, not a stroll.
The tourism agency puts JR Kochi Station about 30 minutes away by car and the Harimayabashi bus terminal about 25. Kochi Castle is roughly 9.8 km from the berth — about 25 to 30 minutes, depending on whose estimate you read.
That’s why the shuttle matters so much here. The prefecture’s 2026 reception contract specifies a shuttle between the wharf and the Harimayabashi bus terminal, starting about an hour after the ship arrives.
Kochi gives you three good things close together downtown.
The castle is one of 12 in Japan with a keep that survives from the Edo period or earlier, and Hirome Market, the food hall, sits a short walk from it.
On Sundays, the street market runs about 1 km from the castle’s Otemon Gate toward Harimaya.
Katsurahama, the beach with the big Sakamoto Ryoma statue, is the odd one out. It’s actually closer to the ship than the city is — about 5.6 km — but the published shuttle route runs downtown, not to the beach.
Which tours earn the fare, and which ones the shuttle and a tram ticket can replace, is what our Kochi shore excursion guide sorts out. Read it before you pay for a castle tour, not after.
From the wharf into Kochi
Four listed positions, 7-1 to 7-4, at 4705 Shinkou, Niida. The tourism agency lists a welcome ceremony, tourist information and local goods for sale on arrival.
Free municipal shuttles have run on past calls, and fares were under study as of January 2026. Nothing guarantees one on your call, so confirm for your date.
The Japan Tourism Agency’s driving time. In principle, per the prefecture’s contract, shuttles start about an hour after arrival and the last one back leaves about an hour before departure.
Kochi’s tourism site times the walk at about 20 minutes. The Ohashidori tram stop is about 3 minutes from the market.
Kochi’s trams cross the center; ride to Kochijo-mae, the stop the tourism agency names for the castle. The fare isn’t on the tourism pages we read.
Taxis may be available depending on the call, Princess says. No port-to-city taxi fare is published, so ask before you get in.
What's nearby, broadly
The Japan Tourism Agency counts Katsurahama as the nearest sightseeing area to the berth — about 15 minutes by car, roughly 3.5 miles. The Ryoma Memorial Museum is nearby, at about the same distance from the ship.
Downtown is the next ring out. The central shopping streets, a main arcade and eight connecting streets with about 500 shops, are about 30 minutes by car; the castle and its history museum are about the same.
Mt. Godaisan, Chikurin-ji and the Makino Botanical Garden are stops on the MY-YU sightseeing bus, which also serves Katsurahama. The Niyodo River, about an hour out by car, and Ryugado Cave are tour territory, not shuttle territory.

Kochi turns up on Japan sailings that pair it with Kansai and points beyond — Seabourn Encore’s January 2026 call came in from Kobe and sailed on to Keelung, Taiwan. For the Kansai side, see our Osaka and Kobe cruise port guide and, farther west, our Hiroshima cruise port guide. In October 2026 alone, CruiseMapper lists calls by Princess, Silversea, Azamara, Costa, Holland America, Seabourn, Celebrity, Regent Seven Seas and Star Cruises. Carry yen — the market runs on cash.
The currency is the Japanese yen. Princess notes that cards work at many shops and attractions, but cash is the norm at smaller shops and most Hirome Market stalls.
Kochi’s own tourism site agrees: most Hirome stalls take cash only. Arrive with notes in your pocket, not just a card.
The shuttle has rules, and they’re the prefecture’s.
The 2026 contract says shuttles leave the wharf, in principle, from one hour after arrival and stop running back one hour before departure. It also notes the route may change. Recheck with your ship if you’re reading this later.
The prefecture sizes the fleet to the ship — four large buses for under 2,000 passengers, up to eight for 4,000 or more. Expect a queue on a big-ship day. The regional bureau has flagged crowding on the regular sightseeing bus when large ships call.
Your line may also sell its own paid transfer. The regional bureau mentions both, so read your daily program to see which one you’re looking at.
No taxi fare is published.
Neither the port nor the tourism agency posts a taxi rate from the wharf. Ask the driver for an estimate before a long run — out to Katsurahama and back, say.
The US advisory is Level 1.
The State Department rates Japan Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, in an advisory issued May 15, 2025 and unchanged when we rechecked it, and the US Embassy in Japan’s site, on October 28, 2026. It lists typhoons (mostly summer to fall), earthquakes and tsunamis, and says some medicines routinely prescribed in the US, Adderall among them, are illegal in Japan.
Ordinary U.S. passport holders can enter Japan visa-free for qualifying short tourist visits of up to 90 days, and the passport must remain valid throughout the stay (Japan’s foreign ministry, checked October 29, 2026). Your cruise line’s boarding-document rules are separate from Japan’s immigration minimum.
Bring a rain layer.
Princess calls Kochi’s climate warm and rainy. In August, the Yosakoi dance festival runs four days, around August 9 to 12, across 16 venues in the city — lively, and crowded.

Kochi FAQ
Is this Kochi in Japan or Kochi in India?
Japan — this page is Kochi on the island of Shikoku. Kochi, also called Cochin, is a different port on India’s southwest coast.
Can I walk from the ship into Kochi?
No. The berth at Kochi New Port is roughly 9 to 10 km from downtown, about a 25-to-30-minute drive.
Options are a shuttle if your call has one, a taxi or a ship tour.
Is there a shuttle bus at Kochi cruise port?
Often, but not on every call. A January 7, 2026 transport-ministry release confirms municipal free shuttles to the Harimayabashi bus terminal ran alongside paid cruise-line buses, and describes research into introducing fares.
Service, destinations and fares vary by call. Check your ship’s daily program, and ask about the pickup spot, the last return and any charge.
Does Kochi tender?
Not normally — the Japan Tourism Agency lists ships at the Misato No. 7 wharves, where they tie up alongside.
How far is Kochi Castle from the cruise port?
About 9.8 km, which the tourism agency puts at about 30 minutes by car. Princess says about 25.
From the Harimayabashi bus terminal, take a tram to Kochijo-mae or walk.
How do I get to Katsurahama?
It’s about 15 minutes by car from the berth, but the published shuttle route heads downtown, not to the beach.
Options are a taxi, a ship tour, or the MY-YU sightseeing bus from the station area. Visit Kochi, the prefecture’s tourism site, lists its Katsurahama ticket at ¥1,500 for adults; other guides print lower, older figures, so check the price when you buy.
Do I need cash in Kochi?
Yes. Most Hirome Market stalls take cash only, per both Princess and Kochi’s tourism site.
Is Kochi safe for cruise passengers?
The State Department rates Japan Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, in its May 15, 2025 advisory — still the current one when we checked on October 28, 2026.
Its main flags are natural hazards — typhoons, earthquakes, tsunamis — and the rules on prescription drugs.
