Lanzarote excursions, from a free town walk to a guided lava hike
Ranked by one question: what does the tour add that a rental car and two online tickets wouldn’t?
At Timanfaya, mostly peace of mind, not access. At La Geria, a driver who isn’t tasting.
Piers, taxis and the walk into town are on our Lanzarote cruise port guide. Sailing on through the Canaries? Our Tenerife shore excursion guide and Las Palmas guide cover the next islands.
This is the stop most people picture when they book Lanzarote — lava fields, volcanic cones and ground hot enough to cook on.
Inside the park you don’t drive or hike the main loop. The park’s own site says the 12 km Ruta de los Volcanes is done by bus only, so a cruise tour and a rental car end up on the same seat.
Islote de Hilario is where staff run the geothermal demonstrations — geysers, burning gorse and food cooked on the earth’s heat. César Manrique’s El Diablo restaurant, from 1970, looks out over the lava through glass walls.
On your own, buy the €30 ticket online for a set time slot and be at the counter 15 minutes early, because CACT doesn’t sell it at the gate — no ticket, no visit.
Princess sells Timanfaya National Park & Camel Ride at 4 hours from $119.95, rated moderate, 4.7 from 11 reviews. The camels are a separate stop on the volcano’s southern slope, about 20 minutes on the animal.
- Time commitment
- About 4 hours on the Princess tour; CACT suggests 75 to 90 minutes inside the site.
- Getting there
- About 30 to 40 minutes by road from the port, by coach or rental car.
- Suits
- First-timers, families, minimal-stress days.
- Ship or independent
- Either. The ship holds the slot for you; a car and a pre-booked ticket costs less and frees up the afternoon.
Why it's worth considering
The landscape most people sail to Lanzarote for.
The park bus means the core experience is the same whichever way you go — so the choice is about price and timing, not quality.
The catch
The ticket is fixed to one slot, and online sales can’t be refunded or changed. A late taxi costs you the visit.
The site closes at 15:45, earlier than many ships sail, so make it the morning, not the afternoon.
Verify before you book
- That your slot leaves an hour of driving margin back to the ship
- Whether the ship tour includes the camel ride or only the park
- The camel station’s winter hours, which close 30 minutes earlier than summer
This is the half-day built around César Manrique’s work — architecture set into the volcanic landscape, not a gallery about it.
Jameos del Agua is a lava tube with a lake of tiny blind crabs, a pool and a concert hall in the rock. It opened in 1968 as the first of his art and tourism centers.
The Mirador del Río is a viewpoint on the north coast, and the Jardín de Cactus is a few minutes from Jameos, on the road back toward Arrecife.
Princess packs Jameos, the Mirador, the cactus garden and the Castillo de San José into its Craters, Lava Tubes & Cactus Gardens tour — 4 hours from $134.95, rated moderate, 4.6 from 11 reviews.
Bought at the door, Jameos runs from €17 and the other two €9 each — about €35 for the three, plus your own car.
- Time commitment
- About 4 hours for the ship version; about 45 minutes at most stops.
- Getting there
- Coach from the pier, or about 25 minutes by car to Jameos.
- Suits
- Couples, first-timers, design lovers, short calls.
- Ship or independent
- Either. The stops sit close together, which makes this the easiest Lanzarote route to drive yourself.
Why it's worth considering
Four CACT sites in one morning, with no timed ticket at Jameos itself.
It pairs well with Timanfaya on a long call, and it works on its own on a short one.
The catch
Princess warns of many uneven stone steps at Jameos, and rates the tour not wheelchair accessible.
Strollers aren’t allowed at Jameos; CACT suggests a baby carrier.
Verify before you book
- Jameos last entry, 17:15
- Whether the tour order changes on your date
- Spring-tide days, when water can cover part of the Jameos path
DIY · timed cave tour
Cueva de los Verdes
Jameos del Agua is the dressed-up lava tube. Cueva de los Verdes is the cave system near it — less theater, more cave.
The visit takes about 50 minutes, for €17. CACT makes booking a date and time mandatory here, as it does at Timanfaya.
No cruise line on our list sells it as a stand-alone tour, but with a rental car it slots in neatly beside Jameos.
- Time commitment
- About 50 minutes inside, plus the drive.
- Getting there
- By car or taxi; it’s near Jameos del Agua on the north coast.
- Suits
- Repeat visitors, active couples, anyone who has done Timanfaya before.
- Ship or independent
- Independent, with a pre-booked slot.
Why it's worth considering
A second volcano experience that feels quite different from the first.
At €17 it’s cheap for what you get.
The catch
CACT’s rates page says nothing about access. Ask before you book if steps or uneven ground are a problem.
A missed slot is a missed tour, so leave Jameos with time in hand.
Verify before you book
- Slot availability on your date
- Children’s pricing (0 to 6 free)
- Closing time against your ship’s all-aboard
Ship tour · La Geria
The La Geria wine route
La Geria is Lanzarote’s wine country, and this is the tour for people who’d rather taste than drive.
Princess sells a Lanzarote Wine Route at 4 hours from $114.95, rated moderate. It’s the highest-rated tour on Princess’s first page with more than one review — though four reviews is a thin sample.
A second version adds salt-pan history to the tasting, 4 hours from $129.95. It has no reviews yet.
- Time commitment
- About 4 hours.
- Getting there
- Coach from the pier.
- Suits
- Couples, repeat visitors.
- Ship or independent
- Ship — the coach is your designated driver.
Why it's worth considering
Volcanic wine country, plus something in the glass.
A half-day, not a full one, so it fits most calls with room to spare.
The catch
Princess doesn’t publish which wineries or how many tastings on the listing we read.
Not a children’s day, and a short one for the price if wine isn’t your thing.
Verify before you book
- Which wineries and how many tastings
- Minimum drinking age on the tour
- Whether food is included
Puerto del Carmen is the resort beach town south of Arrecife, and this is the day that trades volcanoes for sand.
Princess runs a Puerto del Carmen Beach Getaway for Families at 4.5 hours from $39.95, rated easy — the cheapest tour on its first page, rated 3.7 from 11 reviews.
By taxi or car it’s about 15 to 20 minutes from the port, according to one port guide.
- Time commitment
- About 4.5 hours on the ship version.
- Getting there
- Coach, taxi or rental car.
- Suits
- Families, budget days, minimal stress.
- Ship or independent
- Either. The ship’s price is low enough that the transfer alone is a fair deal.
Why it's worth considering
An easy, cheap day — sand and water, not stairs and lava.
Close enough that a taxi back is simple if someone flags.
The catch
You skip the volcanoes, which is why most people sail here.
Princess’s listing doesn’t say whether loungers or umbrellas are included.
Verify before you book
- What’s included at the beach
- The pickup point for the return
- Sea conditions on the day
For people who’d rather walk the volcanic ground than watch it through a bus window — the active answer to Timanfaya’s coach loop.
Shore Excursions Group sells The Moonscape of Lanzarote Hike, a trek through Los Volcanes Nature Park. Our first read of its Arrecife page showed 6 hours at $80.99 on sale ($95.99 regular), but a recheck on October 28, 2026 showed no price or length — confirm both on the tour page.
Inside Timanfaya, the park’s own guided walks are limited to over-16s and set days. This hike is in a different protected area, not the Timanfaya bus loop — check where the route actually goes.
- Time commitment
- About 6 hours on the earlier listing; confirm it.
- Getting there
- Check the meeting point on the listing.
- Suits
- Active travelers, repeat visitors.
- Ship or independent
- Independent, through a third-party operator.
Why it's worth considering
At the earlier $80.99 sale price, less than most of Princess’s 4-hour tours.
You’re on foot, not in a coach line at Islote de Hilario.
The catch
If it still runs about six hours, that plus the transfer is most of a short call.
Exposed terrain in strong sun and wind — bring water and a layer.
Verify before you book
- Route and distance
- Fitness level and minimum age
- Return-to-ship guarantee and meeting point
For anyone who can’t manage steps, slopes or a lot of walking, these are the gentler ways round the island.
Princess sells Easy Lanzarote at 3 hours from $59.95, rated easy, 3.6 from 9 reviews.
Shore Excursions Group lists two private routes labeled easily accessible: a 5-hour Southern Route from $111.99 and an 8-hour Grand Route from $131.99.
- Time commitment
- 3 to 8 hours.
- Getting there
- Pier pickup on the ship tour; check the meeting point on the private ones.
- Suits
- Limited mobility, minimal stress, short calls.
- Ship or independent
- Either — the private routes give you more say over each stop.
Why it's worth considering
A look at the island without the Jameos stairs or the cave floor.
The private routes put the pace in your hands.
The catch
Princess’s first listing page doesn’t describe the Easy Lanzarote stops.
“Easily accessible” is the operator’s label — confirm vehicle steps and wheelchair space directly.
Verify before you book
- Wheelchair or scooter space in the vehicle
- Which stops are drive-by
- Whether Timanfaya is included

Lanzarote with the ship or on your own
Timanfaya: same bus, different risk
Inside the park, everyone rides the park bus round the 12 km route, so the ship isn’t buying you a better view — or a different one.
What it buys is the slot. On your own, the €30 ticket is tied to one time and can’t be changed — a late start costs you the visit, not just a few minutes.
The north coast suits a car
Jameos, the Cueva de los Verdes, the Mirador del Río and the cactus garden cluster within short drives of each other on the north side of the island.
A rental car and walk-up tickets at Jameos, the Mirador and the garden cover the same ground as the $134.95 tour, and let you add the cave.
Third-party and private options
Shore Excursions Group lists five Arrecife tours: a volcano hike, whose price we couldn’t reconfirm, and four private island routes from $103.99.
Princess’s private car and minibus days run $999.95 to $1,899.95 — check whether that’s per car or per person, and compare both before choosing.
How each option compares in Lanzarote
| Excursion | Lean ship excursion when… | Independent works when… |
| Timanfaya and the fire mountains | You don’t want to manage a timed slot | You’ve booked the slot and have a car |
| Jameos del Agua and the north | You want the castle museum and a guide bundled | You’re driving — the stops are close |
| Cueva de los Verdes | Not sold alone on the lists we read | Book the slot online and pair it with Jameos |
| La Geria wine route | Yes — nobody has to drive | Only with a non-drinking driver |
| Arrecife on foot | Not needed | Yes — it suits a short call |
| Puerto del Carmen beach | The $39.95 family tour is fair value | A short taxi ride |
| Moonscape hike | No ship equivalent on Princess’s first page | Through Shore Excursions Group |
| Easy Lanzarote | Rated easy, pier pickup | A private accessible route |
Short answer
On a first call, put Timanfaya first and do it in the morning, by ship tour if you don’t want to own the ticket risk. If you’re comfortable driving, rent a car, book an early Timanfaya slot and the Cueva de los Verdes online, and add Jameos on the way back. Leave Arrecife for the last hour.

Lanzarote port logistics: piers, cars and timed tickets
From the ship to the island
Most large ships berth at Los Mármoles in the commercial port. The Naos terminal, at Puerto Naos, is about 1 km from town.
Ship shuttles usually run toward the Charco de San Ginés. Full pier detail is on our Lanzarote cruise port guide.
- No tendering here
- Taxis wait at both piers
- A rental office sits about 50 m from the port, by one guide’s account
Drive times from Arrecife
About 25 minutes to Jameos del Agua, according to the Canary Islands tourism board. One port guide adds about 30 to 40 minutes to Timanfaya and about 15 to 20 to Puerto del Carmen.
Tickets to book before you sail
Montañas del Fuego: €30, online only, timed, 09:00 to 15:45. Cueva de los Verdes: €17, timed, 09:30 to 16:45.
Jameos del Agua (from €17, 10:00 to 18:00), the Mirador del Río and the Jardín de Cactus (€9 each) don’t need a slot, on CACT’s current page. Children up to six go free at each of them.
Taxi costs
We couldn’t find a published Lanzarote taxi tariff. What’s in Port, an undated guide, puts a four-hour taxi tour at about €150 — an old estimate, so fix the price before you set off.
