Destination Port Guide · Arrecife, Lanzarote

Lanzarote

Arrecife is the doorway to Lanzarote, not the reason you came — and the pier you get decides how long the doorway takes. Most big ships tie up at Los Mármoles in the commercial port, about a 30 to 40 minute walk from the center along an exposed road. The Puerto Naos berths are about 1 km (0.6 mile) out, a flat waterfront walk. The volcanoes of Timanfaya and César Manrique’s lava-tube venues sit roughly 25 to 40 minutes away by road.

Lanzarote in brief

Lanzarote is a volcano island with a small capital on its east coast, and ships berth at that capital — which is a little awkward, because almost everything people sail here for is somewhere else.

Two cruise areas, two very different walks.

Arrecife opened two new cruise terminals on May 20, 2025: Los Mármoles, which can handle up to three ships at once, and Naos, the larger of the two, built for both port calls and turnarounds. Global Ports Canary Islands runs both of them.

Los Mármoles sits out in the commercial port, roughly 3 to 4 km from the center by one port guide’s measure, with little shade on the way — so most people ride, not walk.

The Naos berths sit beside Marina Lanzarote, about 1 km from downtown, and from there the walk in is easy.

The town is pleasant, small and quick.

The Charco de San Ginés lagoon, the Castillo de San Gabriel on its little island, the church of San Ginés and Playa del Reducto fill an hour or two at an easy pace. Plan it as a coda, not the main event.

The island is the day.

Timanfaya National Park, with its fire mountains and a volcano route you see only from the park’s own bus, is about 30 to 40 minutes from the port. Jameos del Agua, the lava tube César Manrique turned into a lagoon and concert hall, is about 25 minutes north.

Both are run by CACT, the Cabildo’s network of art, culture and tourism centers, and Timanfaya now sells timed tickets online only — sort that out before you sail, not on the pier.

Arrecife is getting busier, too — the port authority counted 403,144 cruise passengers here in the first half of 2026, up about 16% on a year earlier.

Our Lanzarote shore excursion guide weighs the ship’s volcano tour against a rental car and a pre-booked ticket. Read it before you decide how to spend the call.

From the gangway into Arrecife

Docked
Los Mármoles cruise terminal

The commercial-port pier where most large ships berth. The terminal opened in 2025 and can take up to three ships at once — on a busy day you may share the quay.

Docked
Naos cruise terminal, Puerto Naos

Closer berths beside Marina Lanzarote, about 1 km from downtown. Larger ships usually go to Los Mármoles instead, so ask yours which one you’ve got.

30–40 min
Los Mármoles to the center on foot

About 2 to 2.5 miles (3 to 4 km) on a road with little shade — doable on a cool morning, a slog at midday.

15–20 min
Puerto Naos to the center on foot

A mostly flat route along the waterfront into the center, by one port guide’s timing.

Shuttle
Ship-run, terms vary

Port guides say ships often run a shuttle toward central Arrecife, near the Charco. Some charge and some don’t — ask your line or check the daily planner.

Bus
Lloret stop, about 300 m

CruiseMapper puts a city bus stop about 300 m (330 yards) from the Mármoles pier. Routes and times are on arrecifebus.com, not posted at the terminal in anything we read.

What's nearby, broadly

Charco de San Ginés Castillo de San Gabriel Playa del Reducto Castillo de San José (MIAC) Timanfaya National Park Jameos del Agua Cueva de los Verdes Mirador del Río Jardín de Cactus La Geria wine country Puerto del Carmen Teguise

The first three are in Arrecife itself. The Castillo de San José, home to the island’s International Museum of Contemporary Art, is on the coast just north of town — close enough for a short taxi hop.

Timanfaya is about 30 to 40 minutes inland by road. Jameos del Agua is about 25 minutes north, with the Cueva de los Verdes, the Mirador del Río and the Jardín de Cactus on the same side of the island.

La Geria is the island’s wine country. Puerto del Carmen, the resort beach town, is about 15 to 20 minutes south by road, and Teguise is a metered ride inland — one undated guide puts it at about €18 one way.

Commonly reached from

Arrecife is an Atlantic waypoint on Canary Islands loops and on transatlantic and repositioning sailings, usually alongside Las Palmas, Tenerife and Funchal. It’s a turnaround port too: MSC uses Arrecife as a home port for several Canary Islands circuits and has confirmed it for 2028. In October 2026 alone, CruiseMapper lists calls by P&O Cruises, MSC, Holland America, Norwegian, Crystal, Saga, Hapag-Lloyd, Ponant and Phoenix Reisen.

Practical notes

Current as of October 28, 2026 Review periodically

Book Timanfaya before you fly.

CACT sells Montañas del Fuego tickets online only, for a set date and time slot, at €30, with children up to six free.

You’re asked to reach the counter 15 minutes before your slot to validate the ticket. It’s good for that slot and no other, and online tickets can’t be refunded or changed — so build in slack for the drive.

The site is open 09:00 to 15:45 every day. Inside, the park says its 12 km Ruta de los Volcanes is toured by bus only, which means you park your car, not drive the loop.

Cueva de los Verdes needs a slot too.

The lava-tube cave visit runs about 50 minutes for €17, between 09:30 and 16:45, and CACT makes a date and time booking mandatory. Jameos del Agua, nearby, opens 10:00 to 18:00 from €17, with last entry at 17:15.

Taxis and cars.

Taxis wait at both piers, but no official fare table turned up in our research. What’s in Port, an undated guide, puts a cab into Arrecife at about €10 and a four-hour island tour at about €150. Treat both as old estimates, not fares — agree the price first.

That same undated guide lists a rental office about 50 m from the port, with cars under €40 a day. On a day with several ships in, book ahead rather than gamble on the counter.

Money, entry and safety.

Spain uses the euro, and port guides say cards are widely taken.

The Canaries are Spain and Schengen, so ordinary U.S. passport holders need no visa for stays under 90 days. The State Department wants your passport valid three months past departure, and recommends six.

The EU’s Entry/Exit System has been fully operational at Schengen external borders since April 10, 2026, recording fingerprints and a photo — check your line’s pre-cruise notes for how it applies on your sailing. ETIAS isn’t in operation, and the EU hasn’t announced a start date. Check travel-europe.europa.eu before you fly.

The State Department’s national advisory for Spain (travel.state.gov, not specific to the Canaries) is Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, for terrorism and unrest, in an update issued August 1, 2026. The US has a consular agency in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Lanzarote FAQ

Can I walk from the cruise ship into Arrecife?

From Puerto Naos, yes — about 15 to 20 minutes on a flat waterfront route.

From Los Mármoles it’s about 30 to 40 minutes along a road with little shade, which is why most people take the shuttle or a taxi for that one.

Does Lanzarote tender?

No. Ships dock at the Los Mármoles or Naos cruise terminals in Arrecife, so you walk off, not ride a launch.

Which pier will my ship use?

Most large ships use Los Mármoles, in the commercial port, while the Naos berths beside Marina Lanzarote sit closer to town.

Allocation can change by day, so check the ship’s daily planner or ask at the excursion desk.

Is there a shuttle from the Lanzarote cruise port?

Port guides say ships often run one toward central Arrecife, near the Charco de San Ginés. Ask your line whether yours does, and whether it’s free.

How much is a taxi from the cruise port?

No official tariff turned up in our research. One undated port guide puts a cab into Arrecife at about €10, so treat that as a rough guide — confirm with the driver before you get in.

Do I need to book Timanfaya in advance?

Yes, if you’re going on your own. Montañas del Fuego tickets are sold online for a date and time slot at €30, and CACT says they aren’t sold at the site.

On a ship tour, the line handles entry for you.

Can I drive through Timanfaya National Park?

You can drive to it and park. The 12 km Ruta de los Volcanes inside is done by park bus, according to the park’s own site, not in your own car.

Is Lanzarote safe for cruise passengers?

The State Department’s national advisory for Spain is Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, issued August 1, 2026, citing terrorism and unrest. It isn’t specific to the Canaries.

On the island, the more practical risks are sun and wind — and one port guide warns that Los Hervideros, the lava cliffs on the west coast, have no railings.
