Montego Bay excursions, from the ten-minute beach to the all-day drive
Ranked by one question: is the place at the end worth the drive?
Close in, the answer is usually yes — the further east or west a tour goes, the more it depends on your all-aboard time.
Berth, taxi and money details are on our Montego Bay cruise port guide. If you’re docked at Falmouth instead, use the Falmouth excursion guide.
For a first Montego Bay call, this is the default day — and it needs a ride, not a ticket.
Doctor’s Cave sits on the Hip Strip, a little over 3 miles from Freeport. You pay at the gate — chairs and umbrellas cost extra.
The setup suits a cruise day: lifeguards, restrooms, showers and changing rooms, and water that is generally calm, with seagrass and a fringing reef offshore.
For a free alternative, Dead End Beach sits about half a mile north — no facilities at all, and a front-row view of jets on final approach.
Take a licensed cab from the loop, or a shuttle if your line runs one. Fix the pickup time before the driver leaves.
- Time commitment
- Your call. Fix the pickup time well ahead of all-aboard.
- Getting there
- Licensed taxi from the port loop, about 10 minutes, or a shuttle.
- Suits
- First-timers, families, budget days and short calls.
- Ship or independent
- Independent. The ride is short and the beach has its own gate.
Why it's worth considering
It’s the beach the city is known for, without a bus tour attached.
A short taxi ride keeps the timing risk low — the margin is minutes, not hours.
The catch
The only published gate price, J$1,100 (US$8) for adults, comes from an archived government beach guide, so treat it as history, not today’s price.
Hip Strip businesses were hit hard by Melissa — the beach may be open while the bar you remember isn’t.
Verify before you book
- Today’s entry price at the gate
- Whether your line is running its own shuttle
Montego Bay’s history sits downtown, not on the beach road — and it’s easy to miss if you only do the beach.
Sam Sharpe Square honors the national hero who led the 1831 Christmas Rebellion, and a monument of statues tells the story. The Parish Church of St James dates to 1774.
Holland America’s Montego Bay Highlights & Shopping covers both, plus a panoramic drive, Gloucester Avenue, the Main Street Mall and a stop at Margaritaville.
The tour is rated Easy, and drinks at Margaritaville are on you.
If you’d rather shop than sightsee, the Harbour Street Craft Market is downtown too — straw, wood carvings and baskets.
- Time commitment
- About 3¾ hours on the Holland America version.
- Getting there
- By coach from the pier.
- Suits
- First-timers and anyone who wants the city’s past as well as its beach.
- Ship or independent
- Either. A licensed driver can do the same loop.
Why it's worth considering
At $49, it’s the cheapest guided option on this page, and the gentlest.
You see the Jamaica behind the resort strip, in a morning.
The catch
It’s a drive with stops, not a beach day — there’s no swim time to speak of.
Price and stops are Holland America’s; other lines may run something different, or nothing similar.
Verify before you book
- Whether your line sells a downtown tour at all
- The stop list, since storm repairs can move things
Rose Hall is the excursion with a story attached, and the story is half the appeal.
It’s an 18th-century great house on the coast east of the city, restored in the 1960s. Guides tell the legend of Annee Palmer, the “White Witch,” who is said to have killed three husbands.
Norwegian’s The Best of Montego Bay pairs it with free time at Doctor’s Cave, in about 5½ hours, from $99.99 an adult. Shore Excursions Group sells Rose Hall Great House and Highlights at 5 hours for $124.99.
Doing it yourself works too: the day tour runs Monday to Saturday, 9:15 am to 4 pm, takes about 45 minutes to an hour, and costs $30 for adults.
Book a driver both ways if you go independently — the house doesn’t provide transport.
- Time commitment
- About 5 to 5½ hours as a packaged tour; about an hour inside the house.
- Getting there
- Tour coach, or a licensed driver for the roughly 11½-mile run.
- Suits
- Couples and first-timers who want history with their beach.
- Ship or independent
- Either. The distance is modest.
Why it's worth considering
History, a ghost story and a swim, in one booking.
The house is close enough that the clock rarely gets tight.
The catch
It’s closed Sundays and public holidays, and the house isn’t handicapped accessible — staircases inside, cobblestones outside.
No photos or video are allowed inside, and kids’ prices differ between the house’s own pages — confirm at booking.
Verify before you book
- That your call day isn’t a Sunday or a holiday
- The child rate for your kids’ ages
Jamaica’s rivers are a better reason to leave Freeport than another beach — if you don’t mind getting wet.
Shore Excursions Group lists White Water Rafting at 4 hours and White Water River Tubing at 5, both $130.99.
Gentler options sit below that — River Tube and Chill runs 5 hours for $118.99, and the River Tubing Safari and Beach Adventure 4½ hours for $92.99.
For a calmer float, the Tourist Board points to bamboo rafting on the Martha Brae, about 45 minutes away in Trelawny, and tubing on the Great River at Montpelier.
Read which river each listing uses before you pay — the port page doesn’t say, and it changes the morning.
- Time commitment
- About 4 to 5 hours, door to door.
- Getting there
- Tour transport from the port.
- Suits
- Active travelers, and families with kids who swim well.
- Ship or independent
- Either, with a firm return time.
Why it's worth considering
It’s the Jamaica you can’t get from a lounger.
There’s a level for most groups, from a lazy tube to white water.
The catch
The port listing gives no minimum age or accessibility detail for any of them, so ask before you book with kids, not at the river.
Horseback combos stretch to 6½ hours and about $199 to $207 — a long day for the money.
Verify before you book
- Which river, and how rough
- Minimum age and swim requirement
Negril is the far-west beach town, and the reason to drive this far is the sand, not the shopping.
Shore Excursions Group’s Negril Beach Break and Ricks Cafe runs 6 hours for $88.99: beach time first, then a stop at Rick’s Café.
Reports from December 2025 said Negril came through Melissa largely unscathed.
Pick it on a long call, not a short one — Negril is a long way west, so a good part of those 6 hours goes on the road.
- Time commitment
- 6 hours.
- Getting there
- Tour transport from Montego Bay.
- Suits
- Couples and beach people on a full-day call.
- Ship or independent
- Either; the ship’s version holds the clock for you.
Why it's worth considering
A different coast from the one your ship docks on.
At under $90 for six hours, the price is reasonable for the distance.
The catch
You’ll spend a big slice of the day in a vehicle.
On a call that ends at 4 or 5 pm, there’s little slack if the road is slow.
Verify before you book
- Your all-aboard time against a 6-hour tour
- How long you actually get at the beach
Dunn’s River is a waterfall you climb rather than look at. It’s also near Ocho Rios, a long way east of your ship.
Shore Excursions Group’s Dunns River Falls Express runs 6½ hours for $106.99, with the climb and some shopping time in Ocho Rios.
That’s a big share of the call spent on the road. If your cruise also stops at Ocho Rios, do the falls there — our Ocho Rios excursion guide covers it.
If Montego Bay is your only Jamaican stop and the falls are the point, book it, and book it early in the day.
- Time commitment
- 6½ hours.
- Getting there
- Tour transport east along the north coast.
- Suits
- Active travelers and families with confident older kids.
- Ship or independent
- Lean ship — it’s the longest tour on this page.
Why it's worth considering
You climb the falls yourself, and the long transfer is handled in one booking.
The catch
Six and a half hours eats most of a typical 8-to-5 call.
The port listing gives no minimum age or fitness note, so ask before booking with kids.
Verify before you book
- Your all-aboard time, with an hour of slack
- Water shoes — ask whether they’re included or rented
This is a tasting day, not a beach day — an old distillery, the rum, and lunch.
Shore Excursions Group’s Historic Hampden Estates with Rum Tasting and Lunch runs 5½ hours for $172.99, at one of Jamaica’s oldest distilleries.
It’s the priciest tour here that isn’t a resort pass or a horseback combo.
Book it on a second visit, once you’ve done the beach.
- Time commitment
- 5½ hours.
- Getting there
- Tour transport from Montego Bay.
- Suits
- Couples and repeat visitors.
- Ship or independent
- Independent, through a third party.
Why it's worth considering
A part of Jamaica’s story the beach days don’t touch.
Lunch is handled, which matters on a long day.
The catch
At about $173, it costs nearly twice the Negril day.
A tasting tour suits adults; check the age rules if the kids are along.
Verify before you book
- Minimum age for the tasting
- What’s on the lunch menu, if you have dietary needs
A private driver solves Montego Bay’s main problem: almost everything worth seeing is a drive from the pier.
Shore Excursions Group’s Private Driver/Guide Full Day runs 6 hours, from $105.99 a person, in an air-conditioned vehicle.
You choose the mix — Rose Hall in the morning, a beach after lunch, a stop downtown on the way back.
For travelers who can’t manage coach steps or long walks, it’s the most flexible option here. Accessibility isn’t spelled out on the listing, so ask.
- Time commitment
- About 6 hours.
- Getting there
- Pickup arranged with the operator.
- Suits
- Families, limited-mobility travelers and groups who want control.
- Ship or independent
- Independent, through a third party.
Why it's worth considering
You set the pace and the stops, not a coach schedule.
One booking covers the whole day’s driving.
The catch
No vehicle type, seat count or wheelchair access is published on the port page.
Remember that Rose Hall itself has stairs and cobblestones, whatever car gets you there.
Verify before you book
- Vehicle type and whether it takes a folding wheelchair
- Pickup point and how the price scales with group size

Montego Bay with the ship or on your own
For the beach, skip the tour
A licensed cab from the port loop gets you to Doctor’s Cave in about 10 minutes, and a packaged beach tour mostly sells you that same ride — transport, not access.
Agree the fare and the return pickup before you leave, and keep the driver’s number.
For the mid-range trips, third parties are fine
Rose Hall and the river tours run about 4 to 5½ hours, which leaves room on a normal day call.
Shore Excursions Group publishes a set duration for each, so you can do the math against your all-aboard before you pay.
Where the ship tour still wins
On Dunn’s River and Negril the drive is the risk, not the activity, so if you’d rather the line held the clock, book those through the ship.
Ask the excursion desk for its times, then compare them with the third-party ones here.
How each option compares in Montego Bay
| Excursion | Lean ship excursion when… | Independent works when… |
| Doctor’s Cave Beach | Only if your line bundles a shuttle you’d use anyway | Almost always — it’s a short cab ride |
| Downtown highlights | You want a guide and a coach | A licensed driver can do the same loop |
| Rose Hall Great House | You want the beach add-on handled | Any day but Sunday, with a driver both ways |
| River rafting or tubing | You want the return guaranteed | With a set duration and a firm return time |
| Negril | Your call ends early | On a long call with slack to spare |
| Dunn’s River Falls | Nearly always — it’s the longest tour here | Only on a long call |
Short answer
Take a licensed cab to Doctor’s Cave and you’ve had the classic Montego Bay day for the price of a ride and a gate fee. If you want one paid tour, make it Rose Hall or a river morning; both fit a normal call. Book Dunn’s River and Negril through the ship, or not at all on a short day.

Montego Bay logistics: the loop, the ride and the clock
Out of the port
Licensed taxis wait in a marked loop outside the terminal. Carnival runs its own shuttle, and the Hot Spot Shuttle links the port and the historic center.
Full port detail is on our Montego Bay cruise port guide.
- Red and white plates mean a licensed cab
- Uber operates here, though locals use it most
- Shuttle lines get long on busy days
Fares
Agree the price, the currency and the return time before you go — at the loop, not halfway there.
For Rose Hall or a beach, book the round trip with the same driver.
Money and paperwork
US dollars are widely accepted, and small notes make taxi math easier.
File Jamaica’s electronic C5 customs form before arrival, unless your line confirms it handles it.
Crowds
January 2027 has 10 calls on the schedule, with two ships on January 20.
On a two-ship day, get to the beach early, before the tour coaches arrive.
