Puerto Madryn excursions, from the whale boats to the town beach
Ranked by one question: will the wildlife actually be there on your date?
Get that right, and the rest is a choice between a long drive and a short one.
Pier, shuttle and season detail is on our Puerto Madryn cruise port guide. If your sailing heads south to the Falklands next, our Stanley shore excursion guide covers the next stop.
This is the trip most people pick Puerto Madryn for — and the one that most depends on your dates.
Península Valdés is a big peninsula north of town, and southern right whales come into its gulfs to breed. Holland America’s Valdés tour runs about 7 hours with a boxed lunch, and about 5 of those hours are on the road.
The whale boats leave from Puerto Pirámides, on the peninsula. The traditional trip is ARS 195,000 for an adult and ARS 97,500 for a child aged 3 to 12 in the 2026 season; a “Yellow Submarine” boat version is ARS 292,500.
Park entry is on top of that — ARS 50,000 for a foreign adult.
Some Valdés tours skip the boat and drive to the far coast instead. Shore Excursions Group’s Valdés Highlights heads for the interpretation center and Caleta Valdés, about 59 miles on from the peninsula, for elephant seals and a small penguin colony.
- Time commitment
- A full day — about 7 to 8 hours.
- Getting there
- By coach from the pier. Tour buses are allowed into the restricted pier area to collect passengers.
- Suits
- Wildlife travelers sailing between about September and mid-December.
- Ship or independent
- Ship, for most people. On a road day this long, the line holding the ship matters more than the saving.
Why it's worth considering
Right whales from a small boat is the headline wildlife experience on this coast.
Holland America lists it at a moderate activity level, and lunch comes with it.
The catch
Out of whale season, the boat is a ride, not a sighting. Ask what the tour does instead.
Holland America flags its Valdés tour as not wheelchair accessible, and part of the road is unpaved. Wildlife is likely, not guaranteed.

- Whether the ARS 50,000 park fee is in the price
- Your all-aboard time against a 2½-hour drive back
If your sailing is after mid-December, this is probably your big day — the penguins stay on after the whales leave.
Punta Tombo is a provincial reserve where Magellanic penguins nest in the hundreds of thousands. A marked path of more than 3 km threads through the colony, so you walk among the burrows, not behind a fence a field away.
It’s about 180 km south of Puerto Madryn, and the last 22 km are gravel. Cruise-passenger tours list about 6 to 7 hours, and one operator’s 7-hour version gives you about 2 hours at the colony.
The 2026–27 fee for international visitors is ARS 35,000 per adult and ARS 20,000 per child.
A new concrete entrance, built for universal access and without steps at the start of the trail, opens this season.
- Time commitment
- About 6 to 7 hours, for roughly 2 hours with the penguins.
- Getting there
- By coach or private car — no public transport reaches the reserve.
- Suits
- Families, first-timers and anyone on a January to March sailing.
- Ship or independent
- Either. Operator tours often start from about $130 a person, but check whether park entry is included — on one listing it wasn’t.
Why it's worth considering
Once the whales have gone, it’s the steadiest wildlife bet on the Madryn calendar.
The new accessible entrance helps if anyone in your group struggles with steps.
The catch
It’s a long road day for two hours on the trail.
Out of season the reserve is shut — it closes around April and reopens in September.

- Opening dates for your exact call
- Whether the ARS 35,000 entry is included

Short trip · about 14 km
Punta Loma’s sea lion colony
This is the wildlife trip that fits a short call — sea lions within a taxi ride, without the 5-hour round trip.
Punta Loma is a small reserve south of town, where about 600 South American sea lions haul out below a clifftop overlook on the Golfo Nuevo. Cormorants nest in the clay walls of the same cliffs.
It’s about 14 km out, on gravel after the coast road. Visits are timed to low tide, and the tourist office posts the times.
Breeding starts in November, and pups are born from December to late January — a good reason to go on a summer call.
- Time commitment
- Allow a couple of hours with a driver waiting — longer if the tide is wrong.
- Getting there
- Taxi, remis or a short tour. Agree the fare and the waiting time first.
- Suits
- Short calls, budget days, repeat visitors.
- Ship or independent
- Independent works if you check the tide. A tour saves you the arithmetic.
Why it's worth considering
Real wildlife, close to the pier, without giving up the whole day.
It pairs well with an afternoon on the town beach.
The catch
High tide can leave the colony thin — plan around the tide table, not your lunch.
No entry fee is published, and no taxi fare either — settle both before you leave town.
Verify before you book
- Low tide times for your date
- The reserve’s entry fee on the day
- The round-trip taxi price including waiting time

Snorkeling with sea lions off Punta Loma
For a more hands-on Madryn day, get in the water with them.
Local operators run boats out to the Punta Loma colony, about 25 minutes each way, for roughly 45 minutes of snorkeling among the sea lions. It’s open from age 6, and you don’t need to be a strong swimmer.
The average winter 2026 price was ARS 180,000 a person, and a dive version runs ARS 260,000.
Confirm the total trip length against your all-aboard.
- Time commitment
- About 45 minutes in the water, plus about 50 minutes of boat time.
- Getting there
- Operators run boats from town — confirm the departure point when you book.
- Suits
- Active travelers, older kids, repeat visitors.
- Ship or independent
- Either — local operators sell direct, so check whether your line sells a version too.
Why it's worth considering
It’s close to town and short, so it fits a call that Valdés and Punta Tombo won’t.
You see the colony from water level, not from a clifftop.
The catch
It runs on the weather — wind on the gulf can cancel it on the day.
The boat ride is open to the weather both ways.
Verify before you book
- The operator’s weather cancellation and refund rules
- Departure point and the return time against all-aboard
- Current price — the winter 2026 figure will move

Whales from the beach at El Doradillo
In the right month, you can watch whales without a boat — or a ticket.
El Doradillo and Playa Las Canteras sit on the Golfo Nuevo north of town. From about June to October, right whales and their calves can come within a few meters of the shore.
Access is free. The short coast road, RP42, was closed for works at last report, so the signed route to Las Canteras runs about 50 km.
Las Canteras has a ranger post open 8:00 to 20:00, chemical toilets and accessible walkways, but nowhere to eat — bring water.
- Time commitment
- Allow half a day with a driver, on the current route.
- Getting there
- Taxi, remis or rental car — there’s no bus.
- Suits
- Budget-conscious travelers and anyone on an early-season sailing.
- Ship or independent
- Independent. You need a driver, not a guide.
Why it's worth considering
It costs nothing beyond the ride, and you set how long you stay.
Watching from the shore is calm, quiet and low effort.
The catch
After about October, the whales thin out — by December it’s a gamble.
With the short road closed, the trip takes longer than it looks on a map.
Verify before you book
- Whether RP42 has reopened
- Recent whale sightings from shore
- The taxi price for the round trip with waiting time
If you’re not doing a long road day, this is how Madryn fills the rest of it.
The beach runs about 4 km from the Piedra Buena pier south to the Indio Tehuelche monument, along the Almirante Brown waterfront. Beach bars sit along it.
On the headland east of the center, the Ecocentro is an interactive museum about the sea, with a marine-invertebrate display and recordings of whale song.
Check the Ecocentro’s opening hours and price at the tourist office by the pier gate.
- Time commitment
- An hour on the beach, or half a day with the Ecocentro.
- Getting there
- On foot from the pier gate. The Ecocentro, out on the headland, is a longer walk or a short taxi.
- Suits
- Short calls, families, anyone back from a morning tour.
- Ship or independent
- Independent — there’s nothing to book.
Why it's worth considering
It’s right there, and it costs little.
The Ecocentro adds context to the whales if you can’t get out to see them.
The catch
It’s a beach town, not a sightseeing city — half a day covers it.
Wind off the gulf can turn a beach afternoon into a cold one.

Puerto Madryn with the ship or on your own
On the long drives, the ship’s tour earns its fare
Valdés is about 2½ hours each way, partly on unpaved road, and Punta Tombo ends on 22 km of gravel. A breakdown or a slow return is the ship’s problem on a ship tour — and yours on a private one.
Tour coaches are allowed into the restricted pier area, so a ship tour starts at the gangway, not a meeting point in town.
Close to town, independent works
Punta Loma, El Doradillo and the beach need a driver at most. Agree a round-trip fare with waiting time before you set off.
The sea lion snorkel operators sell direct, in town.
Compare before you commit
Holland America posts its Valdés price, from $229, and Shore Excursions Group posts its Valdés Highlights at $234.99. Operator Punta Tombo tours list from about $130.
Check what each price leaves out. Park fees are paid in pesos, and some listings exclude them.
How each option compares in Puerto Madryn
| Excursion | Lean ship excursion when… | Independent works when… |
| Península Valdés and the whale boats | Yes — it’s a 7-hour road day | Possible with a reliable private driver and real margin |
| Punta Tombo penguins | If you want the line holding the ship for you | With an operator tour, checking that park entry is included |
| Punta Loma sea lions | If you’d rather not read tide tables | Easily, by taxi or remis at low tide |
| Sea lion snorkel | If your line offers it | Yes — operators sell direct |
| El Doradillo whales from shore | Rarely offered | Yes, with a driver, in whale season |
| Town beach and Ecocentro | Not needed | Yes — it starts at the pier |
Short answer
Book Valdés through the ship if you’re there between September and mid-December; book Punta Tombo if you’re there later. Either way, it’s a full day — don’t try to squeeze it. On a short call, take a taxi to Punta Loma at low tide, then walk the beach.

Puerto Madryn port logistics: the pier, the pesos and the drives
From the ship into town
Ships dock at the Luis Piedra Buena pier, about 950 meters long. The port administration’s free shuttle runs between the gangway and the pier entrance while your ship is in.
From the gate, downtown is about 200 meters on, and the town beach starts beside the pier.
Full pier detail is on our Puerto Madryn cruise port guide.
- On days with more than two ships, one may berth at the Almirante Storni cargo pier
- Tour coaches collect passengers inside the restricted pier area
- Ships dock here — no tendering
The drives
Valdés: about 2½ hours each way, partly unpaved. Punta Tombo: about 180 km, with 22 km of gravel at the end. Punta Loma: about 14 km.
Punta Tombo and El Doradillo have no bus service, so book a tour or a driver.
Money and fees
Park fees and local trips are priced in Argentine pesos, and the rate moves fast. Valdés is ARS 50,000 for a foreign adult, Punta Tombo ARS 35,000.
No taxi fare is posted for the pier. Agree the price, and the waiting time, first.
Safety and paperwork
The State Department rates Argentina Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, in its July 10, 2026 advisory, and warns of pickpockets in cruise ports.
US citizens don’t need a visa for stays of up to 90 days.
