Puerto Madryn in brief
Puerto Madryn is two ports in one: a quiet seaside town you can walk, and a launch pad for Patagonian wildlife you can’t reach on foot.
Ships tie up at the Comandante Luis Piedra Buena pier, which runs about 950 meters out into the Golfo Nuevo and takes two large ships at once.
A third ship goes to the Almirante Storni pier, the working cargo and fishing quay — so on a busy day, ask on board which one is yours.
The pier is long — the walk into town, once you’re off it, is short.
The port administration runs a free shuttle bus from the gangway to the pier entrance while your ship is alongside. From the gate, downtown is about 200 meters on — a stroll, not a transfer.
The town beach starts right there — about 4 km of sand runs from the pier south to the Indio Tehuelche monument, with beach bars along the way.
The famous wildlife is out of town, and the distances are real.
Península Valdés, the UNESCO-listed peninsula where southern right whales come to breed, is about 2½ hours each way by road. Punta Tombo’s penguin colony is about 180 km south, with the last 22 km on gravel.
That makes timing the whole game here — the month you sail decides more than the tour you pick. Whale boats from Puerto Pirámides run roughly June to December, and the penguins are at Punta Tombo from about mid-September to the end of March.
Which of those long days is worth your fare, and which shorter trips fit a tight call, is what our Puerto Madryn shore excursion guide works through. Read it before you pick a tour.
From the gangway to the beach
The cruise pier, expanded in 2016–17 to take two big ships side by side. Ships over 300 meters, such as Majestic Princess, berth here.
That’s the distance between some berths and the shore. Your own walk depends on where along it your ship sits.
Run by the port administration between the gangway and the pier entrance, for as long as your ship is moored.
The shopping streets and a tourist information office start near the gate.
Continuous sand from the pier to the Indio Tehuelche monument, backed by the Almirante Brown waterfront boulevard.
Ships dock here, though a busy day can send one to the Almirante Storni pier — ask on board which berth yours has.
What's nearby, broadly
The beach and the waterfront are walking distance — the rest needs wheels. The Ecocentro, an interactive museum about the sea, sits on the headland east of the center. Punta Loma’s sea lions are about 14 km out on gravel, and El Doradillo, where whales can come within a few meters of the shore, is about 50 km by the signed route while the short coast road is closed for works. Valdés and Punta Tombo are full-day drives — road trips, not side trips.
Commonly reached from
Puerto Madryn sits on Patagonia’s Atlantic coast, on South America itineraries between Buenos Aires or Montevideo and the far south — the Falklands, Cape Horn and Ushuaia. The port administration expects about 44 calls between late October 2026 and April 2027, with the busiest stretch December to February. Princess, Celebrity, Carnival, Costa, MSC, Cunard and AIDA are on the 2026–27 list, along with expedition ships from Ponant, Oceanwide, HX, Silversea, Scenic and Seabourn. Norwegian is expected the season after. See the wider route on our South America & Antarctica cruises hub, or open Puerto Madryn on the Seabound Cruise Atlas.

Argentine pesos, and the rate moves.
Park fees and local boat trips are priced in pesos, not dollars. Exchange rates swing a lot, so check the day’s rate rather than an old guidebook figure.
For 2026–27, the Península Valdés entry fee is ARS 50,000 for a foreign adult and ARS 25,000 for a child aged 6 to 11. Punta Tombo charges international visitors ARS 35,000 per adult and ARS 20,000 per child, and sells tickets online.
No taxi fare is published for the pier.
Taxis and remises (booked cars) work the town, but there’s no posted cruise fare. Agree the price before you get in, and be clear whether it’s one way or a wait-and-return.
There’s no public transport to Punta Tombo or El Doradillo — for those, it’s a tour, a remis or a rental car.
Season decides what you’ll see.
Right whales are in the gulfs roughly June to December, with the busiest whale-watching weeks from September to mid-December. Punta Tombo opens around mid-September and closes in late March or early April.
Orcas visit Punta Norte, at the tip of Valdés, from about February to May. That’s a hope, not a booking.
The US advisory is Level 1 — normal precautions.
The State Department’s Argentina advisory, issued July 10, 2026, says exercise normal precautions, and flags pickpockets in tourist areas and cruise ports.
US citizens don’t need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days.

Puerto Madryn FAQ
Can I walk from the cruise ship into Puerto Madryn?
Yes, once you’re off the pier. A free shuttle runs the length of it, about 950 meters, and downtown is about 200 meters from the pier gate.
Does Puerto Madryn tender?
No — ships dock at the Luis Piedra Buena pier. When more than two ships are in, one may use the Almirante Storni pier instead.
Is there a cruise shuttle in Puerto Madryn?
Yes — the port administration runs a free bus between the gangway and the pier entrance while your ship is moored.
How far is Península Valdés from the cruise port?
Plan on about 2½ hours each way by road, part of it unpaved. Holland America’s Valdés tour runs about 7 hours in all — a full day, not a morning.
How far is Punta Tombo?
About 180 km south of town, with the last 22 km on gravel. Cruise-passenger tours run about 6 to 7 hours.
When can I see whales in Puerto Madryn?
Roughly June to December. The busiest whale-watching weeks run from September 1 to December 15, so a late-season sailing in February or March is a penguin trip, not a whale trip.
How much is the Península Valdés entry fee?
ARS 50,000 for a foreign adult and ARS 25,000 for a child aged 6 to 11, for 2026–27. Children 5 and under go free.
Some tour listings leave park fees out of the price — ask whether yours includes it.
Is Puerto Madryn safe for cruise passengers?
The State Department rates Argentina Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, in an advisory issued July 10, 2026.
It still warns of pickpockets in tourist areas and cruise ports.
