Puerto Quetzal excursions, by how far they take you
Each option below is judged on what it gives back for the time spent on the road.
Antigua is the usual answer. Pacaya is the adventurous one, and the coast covers the short days.
The berth, the money and the advisory are on our Puerto Quetzal cruise port guide. Prices below are as printed by the line or booker, in U.S. dollars, and they move by ship and date.
This is the tour most ships build their call around.
Norwegian’s Colonial Antigua runs seven hours from $119.99 for an adult and $99.99 for a child, rated activity level 2. It walks the Central Plaza, the cathedral and the Jade Museum, includes lunch at a Guatemalan restaurant and returns past the Agua and Fuego volcanoes.
Shore Excursions Group sells a seven-hour Highlights of Antigua at $110.99, rated moderate. It lists about 90 minutes from the pier to Parque Central, then La Merced, the cathedral, the Santo Domingo ruins and a jade factory,.
Holland America’s page names Panoramic Antigua and Urban Insider: Antigua Guatemala, without prices or durations on the page we read.
- Time commitment
- About 7 hours on the Norwegian and Shore Excursions Group listings.
- Getting there
- Coach or van from the pier, roughly 90 minutes each way.
- Suits
- First-timers and couples who want Antigua with the logistics handled.
- Ship or independent
- Either. A ship tour is tied to the ship’s clock; an outside booker is cheaper on paper.
Why it's worth considering
It folds the drive, a guide, lunch and the main sights into one fare.
Antigua is compact, so a guided loop covers its best-known corners.
The catch
After the road, you get a few hours in town at best.
Shore Excursions Group lists its Highlights tour as not wheelchair accessible.

Want Antigua without a group? Book the ride, not the day.
Princess lists a transport-only Colonial Antigua On Your Own at 6.5 hours and $79.95, rated moderate. Holland America names an Antigua on Your Own as well; we saw no price on its page. One transfer guide lists private cars from USD 140, which leaves the per-person or per-vehicle question open.
In town, the Santa Catalina Arch is free to view from the street, and the cathedral ruins sit behind the active cathedral. The Capuchinas Convent opens daily from 9:00 to 17:00, and a guide site printed foreign-visitor admission at Q40 in August 2026.
- Time commitment
- About 6.5 hours on the Princess listing, with roughly 2½ to 3 hours of that on the road.
- Getting there
- Line transfer or a named private car, with the pick-up point agreed in advance.
- Suits
- Couples, repeat visitors and travelers who dislike group pace.
- Ship or independent
- Ship if you want the line to own the clock; independent if you will write down the return time.
Why it's worth considering
You choose the order, the lunch and how long you linger.
The sights are close together, which suits a self-guided loop.
The catch
Norwegian says its ship waits only for a delayed Norwegian tour — a private car gets no such promise.
The line’s drop-off point can change, so confirm where you will be collected.
Verify before you book
- The pick-up point and return time, in writing
- Whether a quoted private fare is per person or per vehicle
Pacaya is the day for people who want the volcano, not the cathedral.
Princess lists a six-hour Pacaya Volcano Hike and Countryside Drive at $109.95, rated strenuous. The park sits at 2,552 meters, is open daily from 7:00 to 18:00, and charges foreigners Q50, according to Central America’s tourism site, which also says tourists must go with local guides.
A hiking site describes a shared tour from Antigua as about six hours door to door, with roughly 1 hour 45 minutes of climbing and about 600 meters of gain. Add the drive from the port and the call gets very tight.
Conditions move. On October 23, 2026, Guatemala’s volcano agency warned against walking on the western-flank lava flows and fissures and against ascending Mackenney crater.
- Time commitment
- About 6 hours on the Princess listing; ask what your line allows for the drive.
- Getting there
- Coach from the pier, then the trail with a local guide.
- Suits
- Active travelers with sturdy shoes and a long call.
- Ship or independent
- Ship. A hike this far from the pier is a poor place to gamble on timing.
Why it's worth considering
It’s the one outing here that puts you on a live volcano — with a guide who knows what’s open.
Afternoon thunderstorms are common from May to October, so a morning start helps.
The catch
It is rated strenuous, and one hiking site puts the climb alone at about 1 hour 45 minutes.
The permitted route can change with volcanic activity. Recheck before you go.
Verify before you book
- That the tour is running on your date and which route is permitted
- Your fitness against the strenuous rating
Coffee is the gentle version of the volcano day.
Princess lists a 4.5-hour Country Drive and Coffee Plantation at $99.95, rated easy. Celebrity describes a coffee-and-chocolate outing with a coffee farm and a chocolate museum, and no price or duration on the page we read.
Shore Excursions Group pairs a plantation with the Jade Museum and a walk through Antigua in six hours, drive included, at $132 per adult. Its page said the tour was not available for purchase on October 29, 2026. It also notes that coffee harvest may be visible in October and November.
- Time commitment
- About 4.5 hours for the farm alone; about 6 for the combination with Antigua.
- Getting there
- Coach from the pier.
- Suits
- Couples, anyone who wants a slow day, travelers with limited stamina.
- Ship or independent
- Ship for the farm. An outside combo is worth a look if it is bookable on your date.
Why it's worth considering
Easy walking, a tasting and a view of the countryside at low effort.
The combination gets you a short Antigua walk without spending the whole day there.
The catch
You trade town time for farm time, so Antigua gets a taste, not a visit.
The fare is steep next to a transport-only ride — you’re paying for the farm.
Verify before you book
- Whether the listing is bookable for your sailing
- How long the stop in Antigua really is
A call doesn’t have to be all churches.
Shore Excursions Group sells a seven-hour Hot Springs Escape at $89.99, with lunch. Its image caption names the Santa Teresita springs.
The listing puts the springs near Antigua, so the long drive still applies. It is a fair option when you want to sit in warm water, not queue at a church door.
- Time commitment
- 7 hours on the listing.
- Getting there
- Vehicle from the pier.
- Suits
- Couples and tired travelers.
- Ship or independent
- Independent through the booker; confirm the return plan.
Why it's worth considering
The fare is lower than most Antigua tours.
It is a low-effort day after several busy ports.
The catch
It gives up the colonial sights that put Puerto Quetzal on the map.
Few details are public, so ask what is included.
Verify before you book
- Where the springs are relative to Antigua
- Towel, swimsuit and locker arrangements
Families with young kids may like this one.
Princess lists a 4.5-hour Auto Chapin Drive-Through Nature Park and Zoo at $79.95, rated easy. CruiseMapper names Auto Safari Chapin, in Escuintla, among the places excursions go.
It’s a drive-through, so there’s little walking — handy for small legs and hot days.
- Time commitment
- About 4.5 hours on the Princess listing.
- Getting there
- Coach from the pier.
- Suits
- Families and anyone who needs a seat.
- Ship or independent
- Ship.
Why it's worth considering
Animals without the Antigua walk.
A shorter day than the colonial tours.
The catch
It skips the main reason ships call here.
Listings give few details, so ask before booking.
Verify before you book
- Whether your line sells it
- What animals and stops are included
When the call is short, stay on the coast.
Shore Excursions Group lists Explore Puerto Iztapa and a Local Fishing Village at three hours and $98.99, with a shrimp farm, a boatyard and the civic center. Its Coastal Kayak and El Parrandón Village runs 5.5 hours at $134.99, with mangrove channels, bird watching and a swim.
Neither goes near Antigua, which should keep the road short — confirm the ride time when you book.
- Time commitment
- 3 hours for Iztapa; 5.5 hours for the kayak.
- Getting there
- Vehicle from the pier, a short ride by the sound of the listings.
- Suits
- Short calls, active travelers and bird fans.
- Ship or independent
- Independent through the booker; settle the return plan.
Why it's worth considering
Less time on the road means less risk to your clock.
You see a working coastal community.
The catch
The kayak listing says food is not included while its description mentions a light lunch — ask.
Little here replaces Antigua for a first visit.
Verify before you book
- Pick-up point and return time

Puerto Quetzal with the ship or on your own
Transport is the decision
The ship’s coach, a booker’s van or a private car — that choice matters more here than the itinerary. CruiseMapper leans toward ship-organized tours here.
Settle it early — walk-up options at the pier aren’t documented on the pages we read.
Long days belong to the ship
Pacaya and the seven-hour Antigua tours leave little slack, and a line’s own coach runs on the line’s clock. Norwegian says it waits for a delayed Norwegian tour; we found that promise on no other page.
Where a line makes that promise, it’s part of what the fare buys, and on a long day it’s worth having.
Short hops work on your own
A coastal tour or a self-guided Antigua loop is simpler to manage than a volcano.
Book a named driver, write down the pick-up point and keep a buffer before all-aboard.
How each option compares in Puerto Quetzal (Antigua)
| Excursion | Lean ship excursion when… | Independent works when… |
| Antigua guided tour | Yes — lunch and the clock included | Booker versions exist at similar prices |
| Antigua on your own | Transport-only listings on some lines | Yes, with a named car and a written return time |
| Pacaya volcano hike | Yes — strenuous, far from the pier | Possible, but a long day with guides required |
| Coffee farm | Yes, on lines that list it | Combos through a booker, if bookable |
| Hot springs | Not on the ship pages we read | Yes, through a booker |
| Auto Chapin zoo | Yes, on lines that list it | Not found |
| Puerto Iztapa and the kayak | Not on the ship pages we read | Yes, through a booker |
Short answer
Pick one thing, not three. For a first visit, take a guided Antigua day, ship or booker, and let someone else watch the clock. If you prefer your own pace, book a named transfer and write down the return time. Choose Pacaya if your legs are ready and your call is long — and recheck access first. On a short call, stay on the coast.
