Puerto Quetzal (Antigua)

Puerto Quetzal is where the ship ties up, not where the day happens. Antigua sits roughly 90 minutes inland by road, and the port town of San José is about a mile away. Plan the drive before you plan the sights — a ship tour or a booked transfer, with the all-aboard time in your pocket.

Puerto Quetzal (Antigua) in brief

Puerto Quetzal is a Pacific cargo port that also takes cruise ships.

For a passenger that makes it a gateway more than a destination, and Holland America’s own port page says there isn’t a great deal to see and do in the port town.

The berth is a single pier.

The port describes its passenger berth as one berth formed by six mooring dolphins, 185 meters long, with 13 meters of depth. Ships dock at the pier, and nothing we read mentions tendering.

The cruise terminal has a market with a jade museum and vendor stalls, plus cafe bars, a restaurant and live music, according to CruiseMapper. Treat it as a first stop, not the day.

Antigua is the reason ships come.

It’s the colonial former capital, set among volcanoes, and it lies about 90 minutes from the pier by road. Shore Excursions Group quotes roughly that each way, though a Guatemalan transfer guide says about 1 hour 20 minutes.

Do the sums before you book. The road eats about three hours round trip, and whatever is left of the call is your time in town.

Check the call list for your date.

The port’s own list, as reposted in late October, shows 31 calls between November 5, 2026 and December 4, 2027. The list runs into autumn 2027, with Celebrity Summit on September 24, but we didn’t tally calls by month. Berthing time is mostly 06:00, and no departure times are listed.

Norwegian, Holland America, Virgin Voyages, Regent, Azamara, Cunard and others turn up by ship name, and on January 10, January 31 and March 5, 2027, two ships share the day.

Our Puerto Quetzal shore excursion guide sorts the Antigua tours, Pacaya, the coffee farms and the short options near the port. Read it before you pick one.

Off the ship: a terminal market, then a drive

One passenger pier

The port lists a single berth with six mooring dolphins. You walk off at the pier; tendering isn’t part of the picture.

Vendor stalls, a jade museum, cafe bars, a restaurant and live music, per CruiseMapper — good for a first look and a coffee.

∼1 mile
San José (Puerto San José)

About 2 km west of the port, by CruiseMapper’s count. The cruise pages we read send passengers inland instead.

The big drive, at roughly 1 hour 20 minutes to 90 minutes each way, longer if the road backs up.

∼1 hr from Antigua
Pacaya volcano

It sits in San Vicente Pacaya, in Escuintla, about an hour south of Antigua — a tour, not a stroll.

Antigua packs its sights into a small grid of old streets, and the Santa Catalina Arch, the cathedral ruins and La Merced are on the usual list. You can view the arch from the street for free.

The Capuchinas Convent opens daily from 9:00 to 17:00. A guide site printed foreign-visitor admission at Q40 in August 2026, so bring a few quetzales.

Beyond town, the volcanoes take over. Pacaya is the hiking day and the coffee farms are the slow one.

Practical notes

Current as of October 29, 2026 Review periodically

Read the advisory first.

The U.S. Embassy in Guatemala’s site relays the State Department’s December 30, 2024 reissuance: Level 3, for the whole country and not just the port. It reads “Reconsider travel to Guatemala due to crime and terrorism. Some areas have higher risks. Please read the full Travel Advisory.” We couldn’t load travel.state.gov, so we can’t say the level is still current. Recheck it before you sail.

Puerto Quetzal and Pacaya are both in Escuintla department. We couldn’t read the area list, so we can’t say whether it touches your route. Read it on travel.state.gov before you book anything that isn’t a ship tour.

Lean on organized tours.

CruiseMapper recommends booking cruise-line-organized excursions here, which is its advice and not a government rule. It fits how ship tours are built, with pickup at the pier, a guide and a fixed return.

If you go independent, book a named transfer in advance and agree the Antigua pick-up point and the return time in writing. A transfer guide quotes private cars from USD 140, without saying whether that is per person or per vehicle.

The ship may not wait for you.

Norwegian says its ship waits only for a delayed Norwegian tour, which leaves a private transfer on its own. Leave slack before all-aboard — the ship sails on its clock, not yours.

Carry some quetzales.

The currency is the quetzal. A money guide says some tourist businesses take dollars but give change in quetzales, and markets expect quetzales.

Cards are widely accepted in Antigua, according to a guide quoting the State Department. Use an ATM inside a bank or mall, not on the street.

Paperwork for U.S. passport holders.

We couldn’t confirm the visa rule for ordinary U.S. passport holders from an official page, so check travel.state.gov before you sail. A secondary source says Guatemala also requires an electronic traveler’s declaration, filed on the SAT tax portal, from people entering or leaving. Ask your line whether it covers that form on a port day.

Altitude and volcano days.

Antigua sits at roughly 5,000 to 5,500 feet, per a Shore Excursions Group listing. Pacaya is another matter: Guatemala’s volcano agency warned on October 23, 2026 against walking on the western-flank lava flows. Recheck before you go.

Sources: the port’s berth description and call list, as reposted by Living in Guatemala (pulled October 28, 2026); CruiseMapper on the terminal and San José; Holland America, Norwegian and Shore Excursions Group listings; Living in Guatemala on the transfer and on Pacaya; Visit Centro America on the park; GuruWalk on Antigua sights; Remitly on money; the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala’s advisory page; Agencia Ocote on the traveler’s form — all read October 29, 2026. The Level 3 reading is the embassy’s repost of a December 30, 2024 reissuance. travel.state.gov’s Guatemala page did not load for us, so the current level, its date and the area list are unconfirmed. No fare or shuttle schedule is published for the port.
