Sorrento Shore Excursions: A Hydrofoil to Capri, a Train to Pompeii, and a Tender Clock Over Both

Sorrento puts two big days out within easy reach of the tender. Capri is about 20 minutes away by hydrofoil, from the harbor you land in. Pompeii is about 39 minutes by train from the top of the cliff. Neither needs a tour. Vesuvius, Herculaneum and the coast road are where a booked day earns its keep — and every plan here answers to the last tender, not the all-aboard.

01

Sorrento in 30 seconds: hydrofoil for Capri, train for Pompeii

Known for
A clifftop town on the Bay of Naples, with Capri a short hop by sea and Pompeii a short ride by rail.
Strongest excursion styles
Independent for Capri, Positano and Pompeii, and a booked day for Vesuvius, two ruins at once or a driven coast tour.
Booking on your own
Easy in season — boats leave from the tender harbor, and the train takes contactless cards at the gate.
The one thing to know
This is a tender port, so work back from the last tender to the ship and then add a margin — the all-aboard time is the wrong number to plan around.
02

Quick picks for a Sorrento port day

Your two best days out here cost a boat ticket or a train fare. Keep the tour budget for the volcano and the coast road.

03

Sorrento excursions, from the cliff top to the crater

Ordered roughly by how much a tour adds — the first few need almost nothing booked, and the last few need a vehicle.

Tender, lift and station detail is on our Sorrento cruise port guide. If your sailing also docks in Naples, our Naples and Capri shore excursion guide covers the same sights from that side.

Free · up the cliff

Sorrento itself: Piazza Tasso, the Villa Comunale and a food walk

  • Lift or about 100 steps up
  • Piazza Tasso and Villa Comunale
  • Food walk 3 hours, $163.99
  • Piazza Tasso at the top

The cheapest day here is the town on the cliff — and on a short call, it’s often the smartest one.

Take the lift near the Villa Comunale, or the steps, and you’re in the middle of town, with Piazza Tasso close by.

If you’d like someone to steer you through the old streets, Shore Excursions Group’s A Taste of Sorrento is a three-hour small-group food walk. It lists $163.99 on sale, down from $199.99, with a snack and a drink included.

Everything else runs at your own pace, so lunch can stretch as long as the tender schedule allows.

Time commitment
Two to four hours on your own, by our estimate; SEG’s food walk runs three.
Getting there
Lift or steps from Marina Piccola, then on foot.
Suits
Short calls, budget days and anyone saving energy for a later stop.
Ship or independent
Independent — a guide adds tastings and context, not access.

Why it's worth considering

No ferry, train or traffic between you and the last tender.

Sorrento Insider puts the steps at under ten minutes, so you can drop back down to Marina Piccola quickly if the weather turns.

The catch

The steps are a climb back up, so use the lift if stairs are a problem.

The food walk is rated moderate, with a fair bit of standing and walking.

DIY · from the tender pier

Capri on your own by hydrofoil

  • About 20 minutes by hydrofoil
  • €21.40 to €28.00 one way
  • Leaves from Marina Piccola
  • Guided version 8 hours, $305.99

Capri is the obvious day trip from Sorrento, and you can reach it without a tour — the boats leave from Marina Piccola, where the tenders land.

Capri.com lists five operators on the Sorrento–Capri run: Alilauro, SNAV, NLG, Laser Capri and Caremar. Hydrofoils take about 20 minutes to Marina Grande, while Caremar and SNAV’s fast ferries take about 30.

One-way fares start at €21.40 with Caremar and reach €28.00 with NLG, and in season there’s a boat every 30 to 60 minutes.

SEG sells the guided version too: its Capri and Anacapri day runs eight hours at $305.99, with the ferry, the funicular and Anacapri and Punta Tragara.

Time commitment
Five hours or more for a meaningful look at Capri, by our estimate.
Getting there
Walk from the tender to the ticket booths at Marina Piccola.
Suits
First-timers, couples and confident DIY travelers.
Ship or independent
Independent in calm weather, as long as you build in a buffer before the last tender.

Why it's worth considering

There’s no transfer at either end — the boat leaves from the tender pier.

Frequent sailings in season let you choose your own return.

The catch

Capri.com says hydrofoils are cancelled in rough seas, and a cancelled sailing leaves your return plan in your hands.

A funicular ride is on most Capri itineraries, so budget time for queues — our estimate.

Verify before you book

  • That day’s return times from Capri
  • The sea forecast the evening before
  • Your last tender against the last boat back

Third-party · small boat

A small-boat sail and swim around Capri

  • 8 hours
  • $431.99
  • 6 to 10 guests
  • Snack and drink included

This is Capri seen from the water.

SEG’s Capri Island Discovery Sail and Swim leaves from Sorrento, caps groups at six to ten guests and heads for the Faraglioni rocks. It runs eight hours at $431.99, with a drink and a snack included.

It’s rated moderate, and swimmers will get the most from it — non-swimmers pay for stops they’ll watch from the deck.

Time commitment
About 8 hours.
Getting there
From Sorrento by boat, so there’s no road transfer.
Suits
Couples, active travelers, families with confident swimmers.
Ship or independent
Either — booked direct, check the operator’s weather and return terms.

Why it's worth considering

A group of six to ten on a boat is a different day from a ferry crowd.

Swim stops make it a beach day as well as a sightseeing one.

The catch

It’s the most expensive Capri option on SEG’s page.

Eight hours plus the tender leaves little slack.

  • Return time against your last tender

Third-party or DIY · by sea

Positano and Amalfi from the water

  • 8 hours, $130.99 on SEG
  • Public boat to Positano about 40 minutes
  • Positano from €18 one way
  • Season ends in early November

The sea route skips the Amalfi Coast road entirely.

SEG’s Experience Positano, Amalfi and the Coast by Sea runs eight hours at $130.99 and stops in both towns. A July and August version at $138.99 gives about three and a half hours of free time in Amalfi.

Doing it yourself, public boats from Marina Piccola reach Positano in about 40 minutes, with one-way fares from €18 on Positano.com’s timetable. Coming back from Amalfi, the last listed sailing leaves at 17:02 — early, for a cruise day.

Many of those sailings run only until October 31 or November 3, after which Positano.com describes two or three trips a day.

Time commitment
About 8 hours on SEG’s version; five hours or more for Positano alone by public boat, by our estimate.
Getting there
From Marina Piccola by boat.
Suits
Couples, first-timers on a long call and budget travelers.
Ship or independent
Either — the packaged boat is cheap for what it covers, and the public ferry is cheaper still for one town.

Why it's worth considering

Two coastal towns in one booking, with no road leg.

SEG’s fare is low for an eight-hour day — less than half its five-hour Pompeii tour.

The catch

Positano’s dock is exposed to wind, and Positano.com warns that crossings get cancelled.

Timetables list the Amalfi–Sorrento run at about 60 minutes, not the 40 quoted in the site’s own text — plan on the longer figure.

Verify before you book

  • That week’s timetable, both ways
  • Whether your date falls after the late-season cutoff
  • What the SEG fare leaves out (the listing says food isn’t included)

DIY · Circumvesuviana

Pompeii by train, or on a half-day tour

  • About 39 minutes by train
  • €3.30 single fare
  • Pompeii entry €20
  • Half-day tour 5 hours, $282.99

Pompeii is easy to reach alone from Sorrento, because the railway starts here.

The Circumvesuviana runs about every 30 minutes, and Bluekeys puts the ride to Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri at about 39 minutes for €3.30. Bluekeys says contactless cards work at the Sorrento and Pompei Scavi turnstiles.

From the platform, the Porta Marina entrance is about 50 m away. Admission is €20 since January 12, 2026, or €25 for Pompeii+ with the outlying villas, and under-18s go free.

If you’d prefer a guide and a vehicle, SEG’s Explore Pompeii’s Roman Legacy in Half a Day runs five hours at $282.99.

Time commitment
Five to six hours with the train and a good look round, by our estimate; SEG’s half day runs five.
Getting there
Lift or steps up from the harbor, a short walk to the station, then the train.
Suits
Budget travelers, families with older kids, history lovers.
Ship or independent
Independent works well, though a tour adds a guide.

Why it's worth considering

A big-name site for a train fare and a ticket.

Trains run often, so a missed one costs you about half an hour, not the day.

The catch

Pompeii admits small bags only, up to 30 × 30 × 15 cm, and the park lists timed entry with a 20,000-a-day cap.

SEG rates its half-day version difficult — plan on hours of walking, not a stroll.

Verify before you book

  • Your entry time slot
  • Pompei Scavi, not Pompei Santuario, as your stop
  • Return trains against your last tender

Third-party · full day

Pompeii with Vesuvius, or the crater hike alone

  • 8 hours each
  • Pompeii, Vesuvius and vineyard $420.99
  • Crater hike and wine $296.99
  • Lunch included

Vesuvius is a drive and a climb, so it’s where a booked day starts to pay for itself.

SEG’s Historical Pompeii, Vesuvius and Vineyard with Lunch pairs a guided Pompeii visit with a winery on the volcano’s slopes, in eight hours at $420.99.

Its Vesuvius Crater Hike and Vineyard Wine Tasting skips the ruins for the summit path, also eight hours, at $296.99, and both include lunch and SEG rates both difficult.

Time commitment
About 8 hours.
Getting there
By vehicle from Sorrento.
Suits
Active travelers and repeat visitors who’ve seen Capri.
Ship or independent
Either, though on a tender day a ship tour’s return promise is worth weighing.

Why it's worth considering

The volcano and the town it buried, in one day, with lunch handled.

The crater hike is a volcano day, not another town.

The catch

Both are long and physical, and eight hours plus tender time is most of a call.

The vineyard lunch is pleasant, but it’s also time not spent at either site.

Verify before you book

  • How long you get inside Pompeii
  • Whether the crater path is open that day
  • Return time against your last tender

Third-party · private car

A private driver for Herculaneum, the coast road or Caserta

  • 8 hours
  • From $169.99 to $180.99 a head
  • Pompeii and Herculaneum
  • Naples and Caserta

If you can fill a car, a private driver covers places the boats and trains don’t reach.

SEG lists five private eight-hour days from the Sorrento cruise marina. Pompeii and Herculaneum starts from $180.99 a head; Pompeii with the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii with Naples, Naples with the Caserta royal palace and a Positano coast day each start from $169.99.

Those are “from” prices per person. Ask what your group pays, not what the headline says.

Time commitment
About 8 hours.
Getting there
The driver meets you at the cruise marina.
Suits
Families, small groups and anyone who wants the coast road at their own pace.
Ship or independent
Either — private is efficient for a full car, while a couple may do better on a small-group tour.

Why it's worth considering

You set the stops, the pace and the lunch.

A driver can link Pompeii and Herculaneum, or Naples and Caserta, in one booking.

The catch

Road time eats into the day, and the listings show eight hours.

A private car has no say over the last tender — the driver’s timing is your risk.

Verify before you book

  • The quote for your exact group size
  • Which entry fees are included
  • The driver’s plan if traffic runs late
04

Sorrento with the ship or on your own

Boats and trains favor doing it yourself

Capri and Positano boats leave from Marina Piccola, and the Pompeii train leaves from the top of the cliff. Both publish fares, and both run often in season.

The risk is the return, not the outbound — a cancelled hydrofoil is your problem on a DIY day.

The tender changes the math

Here the last tender, not the gangway, is your deadline, and the tender can be a bottleneck.

Ask your line whether it holds the ship for its own tours; that promise weighs more here than in a docked port.

Vesuvius and the coast road lean toward a booking

Both mean a vehicle on slow roads, and Vesuvius adds a climb.

SEG publishes its prices up front, so compare them with the ship’s version before you pick.

Short answer

On a first visit in decent weather, take the hydrofoil to Capri and be back at Marina Piccola at least an hour before the last tender. If the sea is up, take the train to Pompeii instead. Save the paid tours for Vesuvius, a two-ruin day or a group that can fill a private car.

05

What we’d skip in Sorrento, and what to check first

Capri and Positano on the same call

Each is its own boat timetable, and Positano’s dock is exposed to wind.

Stacking both on a tender day turns one late sailing into a missed tender, so pick one.

Paestum from Sorrento

SEG sells Paestum from here, seven hours at $506.99.

Those temples sit far down the coast past Salerno — a better fit for a Salerno call than a Sorrento one.

Getting off at Pompei Santuario

Bluekeys warns that the stop for the ruins is Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri.

Watch the station names, not the minutes.

A daypack at Pompeii

The park admits small bags only, up to 30 × 30 × 15 cm.

Leave the big bag on the ship.

A late-afternoon boat back from Amalfi

The last Amalfi–Sorrento sailing on Positano.com’s list leaves at 17:02, and the crossing is listed at about an hour.

Then comes the tender line — build the day around an earlier boat.

Private-car prices taken at face value

SEG’s private days show per-person “from” prices that assume a full car.

Ask for the price for your group size before you compare.

Sorrento port logistics: tender, lift, boats and trains

From the tender into town

Tenders land at Marina Piccola, below the cliff. A lift near the Villa Comunale, described as paid, serves the cliff; and a staircase of about a hundred steps climbs to Piazza Tasso.

Full detail on the climb and the station is on our Sorrento cruise port guide.

Boats from Marina Piccola

Capri: about 20 minutes by hydrofoil, about 30 by fast ferry, from €21.40 one way, while Positano is about 40 minutes away, from €18.

From November to March, Capri.com shows boats every one to two hours, with the last one leaving between 18:00 and 19:00.

The Circumvesuviana

Sorrento is the end of the line, with trains about every 30 minutes: about 39 minutes to Pompei Scavi and about an hour to Ercolano Scavi for Herculaneum.

Herculaneum’s entrance is about a six-minute walk from its station, per Everyrail.

Safety and paperwork

The State Department lists Italy at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, for terrorism (issued May 23, 2025; checked October 29, 2026). It also flags pickpocketing in congested areas and on public transport.

US citizens get up to 90 days in the Schengen Area without a visa. The EES has been fully operational at Schengen external borders since April 10, 2026.

ETIAS has no announced start date — check travel-europe.europa.eu before you fly.

Which Sorrento plan fits you

First-time visitor

Take the hydrofoil to Capri and keep an hour in hand before the last tender.

Capri by hydrofoil →

Families

The train to Pompeii is cheap and quick, and under-18s get in free — just pack light for the bag rule.

Pompeii by train →

Repeat visitors

You’ve seen Capri, so climb Vesuvius instead.

Vesuvius →

Short call

Stay up top — the lift, Piazza Tasso, the Villa Comunale view and a long lunch.

Sorrento on foot →

Limited mobility

Ask the ship about tendering first. If you can get ashore, the lift spares you the steps and the town is the gentlest day here.

SEG’s Capri and Sorrento day, for one, says it isn’t wheelchair accessible.

Sorrento shore excursion questions

Do I need a shore excursion in Sorrento?

For Capri, Positano and Pompeii, no — boats and trains cover them well. A tour helps most with Vesuvius, Herculaneum and the coast road.

How long is the boat from Sorrento to Capri?

About 20 minutes by hydrofoil and about 30 by fast ferry, from Marina Piccola to Capri’s Marina Grande.

How do I get to Pompeii from Sorrento?

By Circumvesuviana train to Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri, about 39 minutes, €3.30 single, and contactless cards work at the gates.

How much is Pompeii admission?

€20 since January 12, 2026, or €25 for Pompeii+, with under-18s free and everyone free on the first Sunday of the month.

Can I see Capri and Pompeii on one call?

On paper, maybe, but on a tender day we’d pick one — both depend on transport you don’t control.

Is a ship excursion safer on a tender day?

For long days by road, often yes, because lines commonly hold for their own tours — confirm that with yours, since it won’t apply to a private car or a delayed hydrofoil.

Do the Sorrento ferries run in winter?

Yes, but less often: Capri.com shows Capri boats every one to two hours from November to March, and Positano drops to two or three trips a day.

Are Sorrento shore excursions accessible?

Mostly not, on the listings we read — SEG’s Capri and Sorrento day says it isn’t wheelchair accessible, and the tender itself is a hurdle.
