Sorrento in brief
Sorrento is a clifftop town on the southern rim of the Bay of Naples, and it’s a small-ship call, not a megaship stop. Ports Europe expected about 107 cruise calls here in 2026, with luxury and small-to-medium ships anchoring offshore.
That shapes the whole day — you’ll lose part of the morning to the tender line, and you’ll want to be back at the tender pier well before the last boat.
You land at the bottom of a cliff.
Marina Piccola is the port area where hydrofoils and ferries leave, and SEG’s listing puts its cruise tender pier there too. The town sits above it.
Sorrento Insider, a local guide, describes a ramp of about a hundred steps from Piazza Tasso down to the port and says it takes under ten minutes. It doesn’t say which direction, so plan on longer for the climb back up.
The easier option is the lift by the Villa Comunale, which Everyrail calls paid. We couldn’t find a published fare or timetable for it, so carry a few euros in coins.
The harbor is also your ferry terminal.
Hydrofoils to Capri leave Marina Piccola for Capri’s Marina Grande in about 20 minutes, and boats to Positano take about 40. So your onward ferry is a few steps from the tender, not a taxi ride.
The train starts in town, at the end of the line.
Sorrento is the last stop on the Circumvesuviana, the commuter railway to Naples. Everyrail puts Pompeii’s ruins about 39 to 40 minutes up the line, and Herculaneum about an hour.
How to split one call between all that is the job of our Sorrento shore excursion guide — read it before you book anything on board.
From the tender into Sorrento
Ships anchor in the Bay of Naples, and your ship’s daily program sets the first and last tender times — read it the night before.
The small harbor below the cliffs, which doubles as the ferry and hydrofoil terminal for Capri and the coast.
About a hundred steps, under ten minutes downhill by Sorrento Insider’s count. Expect the climb back up to take longer.
A lift near the Villa Comunale, described as paid, serves the cliff; no fare or timetable is published in the sources we read.
The main square at the top of the steps, and one of three taxi stands in town, along with the port and the station.
About 0.2 mile (300 m) from the center, per Everyrail, and the place to catch trains for Pompeii and Herculaneum — they leave from up here, not from the harbor.
What's nearby, broadly
The first four are Sorrento itself, a short walk apart once you’re up the cliff. Capri and Positano are boat rides from the pier you landed at.
Pompeii and Herculaneum both sit on the train line, while Vesuvius, Amalfi by road and Naples are where a driver or a booked tour starts to earn its fare — the road, not the distance, is the obstacle.
Commonly reached from
Sorrento appears on small-ship Western Mediterranean itineraries, and in October 2026 CruiseMapper’s schedule showed calls by Oceania, Regent Seven Seas, Windstar, Explora Journeys, Fred. Olsen, the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and Emerald Cruises, and Gangwaze listed Azamara in September. The season peaks in May, when Ports Europe counted 21 ships due offshore. Naples sits across the bay, while Salerno lies on the far side of the Amalfi Coast. See where Sorrento fits on our Mediterranean cruises hub, or open it on the Seabound Cruise Atlas.
Planning your Sorrento day
This page sticks to the tender, the cliff, the piers and the paperwork. Tours, and the ones not worth the fare, get their own guide.
If you’re booking with a third party instead of the ship, our Shore Excursions Group vs. Viator comparison explains the difference — and why, on a tender day, the ship waiting for its own tours counts for more than usual.

The tender sets your clock.
Ships anchor here, so the last tender back is your real deadline, not the all-aboard time on your ticket — look for it in the daily program the night before.
Tendering means steps and a moving boat, so anyone using a wheelchair should ask the ship whether it’s possible that day before planning anything ashore.
Taxis and the lift: bring cash and agree first.
Taxis wait at the port, at the station and in Piazza Tasso, according to Sorrento Insider. No official fare is published, and the guides we read don’t agree on one, so settle the price before the car moves.
The Villa Comunale lift charges a fare as well, and since we couldn’t confirm the amount, carry coins, not just cards.
The train takes cards at the gate.
Bluekeys, a local transfer company, says Sorrento and Pompei Scavi stations have Tap&Go turnstiles for contactless Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and its page puts the single fare to Pompeii at €3.30.
The ferries thin out in winter.
Capri.com’s timetable shows Sorrento–Capri boats every 30 to 60 minutes from April to October, and every one to two hours from November to March, while Positano.com shows NLG’s Positano sailings running April 1 to November 3, and its Amalfi sailings ending October 31 or November 3.
Capri.com says hydrofoils are cancelled in rough seas — on a windy day, have a land plan ready.
The US advisory for Italy is Level 2.
The State Department lists Italy at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, citing terrorism, in an advisory issued May 23, 2025 and still current when we checked on October 29, 2026. Its crime notes say pickpocketing is common in congested areas and on public transport.
US citizens can stay in the Schengen Area up to 90 days without a visa, with a passport valid at least three months past departure and two blank pages, per the State Department. The EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational at Schengen external borders since April 10, 2026.
ETIAS isn’t running yet, and the EU hasn’t set a start date — it says it’ll give several months’ notice. Check travel-europe.europa.eu before you fly.

Sorrento FAQ
Do cruise ships dock in Sorrento?
No. Ships anchor in the Bay of Naples and tender passengers to Marina Piccola, the harbor below the town.
How do I get from Marina Piccola up to Sorrento?
Take the lift near the Villa Comunale (described as paid), or climb the staircase of about a hundred steps to Piazza Tasso.
Allow extra time for the climb, since Sorrento Insider’s under-ten-minutes figure is for the walk down.
Where do the Capri ferries leave from?
From Marina Piccola, the same harbor your tender lands at, and hydrofoils reach Capri’s Marina Grande in about 20 minutes.
How much is the ferry from Sorrento to Capri?
One-way fares on Capri.com’s timetable run from about €21.40 with Caremar up to €28.00 with NLG, and the site says prices stay the same in low season and high.
Can I take the train to Pompeii from Sorrento?
Yes. The Circumvesuviana runs about every 30 minutes, and the ride to Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri takes about 39 minutes.
Get off there, not at Pompei Santuario. The Porta Marina entrance is about 50 m from the platform.
How far is the train station from the harbor?
The station is about 0.3 km from the center, at the top of the cliff. Allow for the lift or the steps from Marina Piccola first.
Is there a taxi fare from the port?
No official fare is published, and the local guides we read give different numbers, so agree the price with the driver before you get in.
Is Sorrento safe for cruise passengers?
The State Department lists Italy at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, for terrorism, in an advisory issued May 23, 2025. Levels change, so recheck before you fly.
Its crime notes flag pickpockets in crowded areas and on public transport, so keep your phone zipped away on the train and the ferry.
