Svolvær Shore Excursions: Trollfjord by Boat, the Villages by Bus, and a Town You Can Walk

Lofoten’s headline sights are on the water, and the water starts at the town pier. The Trollfjord cruise runs about 3.5 hours, a RIB ride 1.5 to 2, and a sailing safari about six. The Henningsvær bus run falls in between, at about 2.5 hours. Check your call length and whether your ship tenders, then choose.

Strongest excursion styles
Boat trips from the town pier. Short guided bus runs to Henningsvær. Small-group kayak, RIB and sail days.

The one thing to know
Several listings give conflicting departure times or hours. Confirm yours before you commit.

Quick picks for a Svolvær port day

Let your call length lead. Under about five hours ashore, choose one boat or the village run. With six or more, the sail safari or a boat plus the town comes into play.

03

Svolvær excursions, from a 2-hour RIB to a 6-hour sail

The boat trips come first, then the bus run, then the free option in town.

Half day · the signature boat trip

Trollfjord by silent hybrid catamaran, about 3.5 hours

  • Port lists 3–4 hours
  • 1,390 NOK adult on one listing
  • Leaves from the main square
  • Wheelchair accessible

This is the headline boat trip. It leaves from the middle of town, so there’s no coach to catch.

The Destinasjon Lofoten cruise manual lists the Silent Trollfjord Cruise at 3–4 hours, February to October. One booking page puts it at 3.5 hours on a hybrid-electric catamaran that holds up to 130 or 140 passengers — the listing gives both figures.

That listing prices an adult at 1,390 NOK, ages 12–16 at 1,042 NOK and ages 3–11 at 695 NOK. Infants are free. The boat has a cafe.

The page gives two sets of departure times — 10:00 and 14:30 in one place, 09:45 and 14:15 in another. Check your voucher.

Time commitment
About 3.5 hours, or 3–4 on the port’s list.
Getting there
On foot to the pier in front of the Thon Hotel on the main square.
Suits
First-timers, families, couples, and anyone with limited mobility.
Ship or independent
Either. We read the pier as walkable from the quays, so the timing risk looks small if your ship docks.

Why it's worth considering

The fjord is the scenery you came north for, and the boat does the work, not your legs.

The listing rates it low effort and wheelchair accessible — a good fit if stairs are a problem.

The catch

Weather can change the fjord passage. A listing for a different trip, Hurtigruten’s Trollfjord day trip, warns that the passage could be adjusted.

Both departure sets sit mid-morning and mid-afternoon, so a short call may catch only one.

Verify before you book

  • Which departure time is real for your date
  • Return time against all-aboard, plus tender time if your ship anchors

Short · fast boat on the fjord

A RIB ride from Svolvær, 1.5 to 2 hours

  • 2 hours on one listing
  • 1.5 hours on Hurtigruten’s
  • Floatation suits provided
  • Not for children under 8

A RIB is a rigid inflatable, and it’s quick. If a full Trollfjord cruise eats too much of the call, this is the shorter version of the same water.

The port’s cruise manual lists RIB Lofoten at 1–2 hours, with 12 passengers per boat. An Expedia listing shows 2 hours for $128 per adult with floatation suits, a noon start and a run to Trollfjord.

Hurtigruten sells its RIB Adventure in Lofoten at 1 hour 30 minutes, from $211 per person.

The Expedia page says it isn’t suitable for children under 8, people with back problems or pregnant women. Its cancellation wording contradicts itself.

Time commitment
About 1.5 to 2 hours.
Getting there
On foot. The Expedia listing gives Joh. E. Paulsens gt. 12 as the start.
Suits
Couples, active travelers and short calls.
Ship or independent
Either. The Expedia listing shows a lower price than Hurtigruten’s, but we couldn’t compare routes or return terms.

Why it's worth considering

Fits a short call and still gets you out on the fjord.

Small boats mean you’re close to the water and the cliffs, not looking down on them from a deck.

The catch

The Expedia listing excludes several groups, and the noon start may not suit your call.

The gap between $128 and $211 is large, and we can’t say whether the routes match.

Verify before you book

  • Cancellation terms, since the listing contradicts itself
  • Where the Hurtigruten version goes, since only the Expedia listing names Trollfjord

Long day · summer only

Arctic sail safari to Trollfjord, about 6 hours

  • 1 June to 31 August
  • 1,390 NOK adult
  • Up to 12 guests
  • Minimum of 4 to run

This is the slow way into the fjord, under sail, with a certified skipper. It’s also a long commitment.

Pukka Travels lists the trip at about six hours, 09:00 to 15:00, from 1 June to 31 August. Guests meet at Kirkegata 17, and the price is 1,390 NOK per adult.

Groups are capped at 12, and the tour needs at least four people to run. The page doesn’t name the vessel.

A 09:00 start asks for an early arrival, and a 15:00 finish leaves you little slack.

Time commitment
About 6 hours, 09:00 to 15:00.
Getting there
A walk to the meeting point on Kirkegata 17.
Suits
Couples and repeat visitors on a long, summer call.
Ship or independent
Independent only, from what we found. Get the return-to-ship terms in writing.

Why it's worth considering

A small group under sail, with a certified skipper.

It’s the same fjord as the catamaran, without the larger boat.

The catch

It needs four bookings to run, and a cruise port day is a hard date.

Six hours on a 9:00 start doesn’t fit a call that begins late.

Verify before you book

  • Whether the minimum of four is met on your date
  • A cancellation policy if the weather blocks the sail

Half day · hard work, on the water

Kayaking in Lofoten, 3 hours with a 2-hour paddle

  • Hurtigruten, from $235
  • Two-person kayak
  • Rated challenging
  • No experience needed

Hurtigruten sells a Kayaking in Lofoten summer excursion, listed at 3 hours. The paddle itself is 2.

The price starts at $235 per person, with a guide, vests and a two-person kayak included.

The page rates it challenging and asks for good mobility and fitness, though you don’t need kayak experience. It starts a short walk from where the ship docks.

It’s Hurtigruten’s own listing, and we found no independent version to compare.

Time commitment
About 3 hours, with a 2-hour paddle.
Getting there
A short walk from where the ship docks, per Hurtigruten.
Suits
Active couples and travelers who want to be in the water, not above it.
Ship or independent
Ship, from what we read. Whether other lines’ passengers can book it isn’t stated.

Why it's worth considering

You’re on the water itself, not looking at it from a deck.

The catch

At $235 it’s the highest of the dollar prices we read for the shorter options.

The page says spring through fall; ask about conditions for your date.

Verify before you book

  • Fitness fit, since the page says challenging
  • Whether it’s offered on your ship’s sailing

Short · art and a fishing village

Art, history and Henningsvær, 2.5 hours by bus

  • Hurtigruten, from $165
  • Easy activity level
  • Galleri Lofoten stop
  • Winter, spring and fall

Hurtigruten’s Lofoten Winter — Art, History and Henningsvær runs 2 hours 30 minutes, from $165 per person. It starts and ends in Svolvær.

The main stop is Henningsvær, where you visit Galleri Lofoten. The route passes Vågan Church without stopping.

It’s rated easy, and a guided bus carries you. The page says no food or drink is included, and it doesn’t say whether gallery entry is.

Mind the season. It’s sold for winter, spring and fall, so it may not run on a July call.

Time commitment
About 2.5 hours.
Getting there
Guided bus from Svolvær.
Suits
Anyone who wants the villages, plus limited-mobility travelers.
Ship or independent
Ship, since it’s a Hurtigruten listing. The port’s cruise manual also lists the SKREI museum at Kabelvåg, about 4 hours.

Why it's worth considering

A village and a gallery without a long drive.

Easy pace, no climbing.

The catch

Its season excludes summer.

Entry to the gallery isn’t clearly included.

Verify before you book

  • That it runs on your sailing date
  • Whether gallery entry is in the price
  • Whether your line lets you book it

Low cost · the town on foot

Svolvær on foot: museum, ice bar and the Fløya trail

  • Town in 1–2 hours
  • Fløya 1.5 km, about 2 hours one way
  • Magic Ice 20–30 minutes
  • Hours need checking

You can do a fair bit on your own here, and the town sights sit close to the harbor.

The center is a 1–2 hour wander, per one guide. The Lofoten War Memorial Museum is on Fiskergaten, and Magic Ice Lofoten is on the quay beside Vestfjord Hotell.

Neither has current hours we can trust. The museum’s published hours are from 2021, and Magic Ice’s differ between Visit Lofoten and a ticket reseller.

For legs, Visit Lofoten lists the Fløya hike at 1.5 km one way and about two hours, starting at or just outside the center. The route to Svolværgeita forks off about halfway.

Time commitment
1–2 hours in town, or about 4 hours for a Fløya round trip if you double the listed one-way time (our arithmetic).
Getting there
On foot.
Suits
Budget travelers, short calls and hikers.
Ship or independent
Independent. There’s nothing to book for the walk itself.

Why it's worth considering

It costs little, and it leaves the tender timing in your hands, not an operator’s.

The Fløya trail climbs above the harbor.

The catch

The trail is demanding near the top, per Visit Lofoten, and reaching the Svolværgeita summit needs climbing experience.

The museum may not be open on your day.

Verify before you book

  • Museum and ice bar hours for your date
  • Your tender schedule before you start up the trail
04

Svolvær with the ship or on your own

Short boat trips: mind the clock

The catamaran and the Expedia RIB leave from central addresses in town, and the listings read as walkable from the quays.

The risk is a tender queue, not a late bus — so if your ship anchors, build in time for the ride in and the ride back.

Long and ship-only trips: read the return promise

Hurtigruten lists the kayak paddle and the Henningsvær run, so its own timing sits behind those — if you’re sailing with Hurtigruten. Whether other lines’ passengers can book them isn’t stated, so ask.

For the sail safari, the page we read states no late-ship policy. Ask in writing.

Short answer

On a mid-length call, take the Trollfjord cruise from the square and spend the rest of the time in town. On a short call, choose the RIB or the village run. On a long summer call, the sail safari earns its six hours if you book the terms in writing.

What we’d skip in Svolvær

The sail safari on a tight call

It’s about six hours, 09:00 to 15:00, and it needs four bookings to run.

A 3.5-hour boat from the square gives you the same fjord with more room to spare.

Assuming a Trollfjord entry

One listing for a related Hurtigruten trip says the passage could be adjusted in bad weather.

Ask your operator what you get if the fjord is skipped.

Taking hours at face value

The museum’s published hours are from 2021, and Magic Ice’s differ between sources.

Confirm both on the day, not the week before.

The Svolværgeita summit without a guide

One guide says reaching the top requires climbing experience or a guided tour.

The Fløya trail gives a view with less climbing, though Visit Lofoten describes a steep scramble near the top.

The Hurtigruten Arctic Route day trip

It’s a roughly 12.5 to 13 hour bus, ferry and ship day built around Hurtigruten’s coastal route, so it looks unlikely to fit a cruise call.

Skip it on a port day.

Leaving taxis to chance

One guide calls taxis limited and expensive, and we found no published fare.

Arrange anything with a deadline ahead of time.

06

Svolvær logistics: the harbors, the landing and the money

From the ship to the square

The west harbor takes ships up to 160 m and the east up to 150 m. Larger ships anchor and tender.

Full detail is on our Svolvær cruise port guide.

Money and paperwork

The krone is the currency, and guides say cards are widely accepted.

Norway is in the Schengen Area. UDI, Norway’s immigration directorate, lists U.S. citizens as visa-free for visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period in Norway and the Schengen Area. The EU’s Entry/Exit System (fingerprints and a photo at the border) has been fully operational since April 10, 2026; ETIAS is not yet in operation, and the EU has announced no start date and says it will give several months’ notice (travel-europe.europa.eu). The State Department’s national advisory for Norway is Level 1, exercise normal precautions. The U.S. Embassy in Norway’s site showed that level on October 29, 2026; the last travel.state.gov version we could open was issued July 6, 2026.

Weather and season

The Trollfjord cruise is listed for February to October, the sail safari June to August.

Pack layers and a windproof for any boat. The Expedia RIB listing supplies floatation suits.

07

Which Svolvær plan fits you

First-time visitor

The catamaran is the clearest first pick — it leaves from the square and runs about 3.5 hours.

Silent Trollfjord cruise →

Families

One listing prices the catamaran at 695 NOK for ages 3–11, and infants are free. The Expedia RIB excludes children under 8.

Silent Trollfjord cruise →

Couples

The sail safari is the quiet pick if your call is long and it’s summer.

Sail safari →

Repeat visitors

Done the fjord already? Kayaking puts you on it rather than above it, and it takes about 3 hours.

Kayaking →

Short call

A 1.5 to 2 hour RIB fits where the catamaran won’t.

RIB ride →

Budget-conscious

The town and the Fløya trail cost little — but check the museum and ice bar for current prices.

Svolvær on foot →

Minimal stress

A ship-run tour puts the return on the line, not on you. Hurtigruten’s Henningsvær run is easy and starts and ends in town.

Henningsvær run →

Limited mobility

The catamaran is listed as wheelchair accessible, and Hurtigruten rates the Henningsvær run easy — though ask about boarding either way.

Silent Trollfjord cruise →
