Cagliari in brief
Cagliari is Sardinia’s capital, and the cruise pier sits right on its harbor.
Ships tie up at Molo Rinascita, a pier in the historic port. The cruise terminal there is about 1,000 square meters and opened in July 2016, with a Guest Information Center, an ATM and free Wi-Fi inside.
You’ll ride before you walk.
The terminal sits inside a security zone that pedestrians can’t cross on foot, so a port shuttle carries you to the exit. It’s free — a transfer, not a tour. The drop-off point can shift from call to call, so listen for the onboard announcement.
The gate opens onto Piazza Matteotti, where the train station and the city and regional bus stops cluster together — handy if you’re heading out of town, not just into it.
The lower town is flat. Castello isn’t.
The Marina quarter begins right outside the port, with Via Roma along the waterfront and Villanova beyond it. Above them sits Castello, the walled hilltop with the cathedral, the Bastione di Saint Remy and the city’s museums.
Getting up there means steep streets, stairways and polished stone underfoot. Public lifts help, though service can be interrupted — so check they’re running before you plan around them.
A neat trick: ride a taxi up to Castello and walk down through Villanova and Marina. The hill does the work on the way back.
Beyond the city, distances grow fast.
Poetto Beach is about 6 km away and on the city bus. Nora’s ruins are about 35 km southwest, and the Bronze Age fortress at Barumini is about 60 km inland — day trips, not strolls, and usually a tour or a hired driver.
Which of those tours are worth the fare is the job of our Cagliari shore excursion guide. Read it before you sign up for anything on board.
From Molo Rinascita into Cagliari
The cruise pier, with three berths totaling about 1,040 meters. Ships dock here; this isn’t a tender port.
Required in practice — you can’t walk through the security area. It runs to the port exit near Piazza Matteotti.
Flat going through Marina, along Via Roma and up toward Piazza Yenne.
Steep streets and stairs. The Saint Remy lift climbs from Viale Regina Elena to the bastion when it’s in service.
About 1 hour 15 minutes of pure walking — plan on 3 to 4 hours with stops.
Too far to walk. City buses PF and PQ go there, and so do taxis.
What's nearby, broadly
Everything up to Villanova on that list is a walk — some of it a steep one.
The Archaeological Museum sits in the Cittadella dei Musei, at the top of Castello. Bonaria and Monte Urpinu are a short ride out. Poetto and the Molentargius wetlands, about 5 to 7 km out, are bus or taxi country, and Nora and Barumini are day trips. Ship tours tend to bundle the outlying viewpoints into one loop for that reason.
Commonly reached from
Cagliari sits on Sardinia’s south coast, on Western Mediterranean itineraries alongside ports such as Palermo, Rome’s port at Civitavecchia or Barcelona. Some sailings call at Olbia, on the island’s northeast coast, as well. October 2026 alone brings Costa, MSC, AIDA, Oceania, Silversea, Celebrity, Cunard, Regent, Viking, Ponant and a run of smaller lines, and the port’s record year, 2017, saw about 176 calls. Euros, and the terminal has an ATM.
Italy uses the euro. The cruise terminal’s Guest Information Center handles destination advice and bookings, and there’s an ATM in the building.
Taxis: call or find a rank, and ask the price first.
The port authority lists two radio-taxi firms — 4 Mori on 070 400 101 and Rossoblu on 070 6655 — plus ranks at Largo Carlo Felice and Piazza Repubblica. No fare from the port is published, so agree it before you set off.
City buses are cheap and run to the beach.
CTM runs Cagliari’s buses. A single ticket costs €1.30 for 90 minutes, €2.00 for two hours, and a 24-hour ticket is €3.30. Lines PF and PQ serve Poetto, with extra seasonal routes in summer.
Buy tickets at newsstands and tobacconists before you board.
The lifts up to Castello aren’t a sure thing.
The Saint Remy and Santa Chiara lifts reopened in May 2024 after a closure, and two others stayed shut for repairs at the time. Treat them as a bonus, not a plan.
The US advisory is Level 2 — increased caution.
The State Department’s Italy advisory, updated September 10, 2026, sits at Level 2 for terrorism. It also notes that petty crime is common in tourist areas and on public transport, so keep your phone and wallet close.
Italy is in the Schengen Area. US passport holders visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180, and the EU’s ETIAS pre-registration isn’t in force yet — it’s now expected in 2027.
Shoes matter more than umbrellas here.
Castello’s paving is worn smooth and slippery. Wear soles with grip, not smooth sandals, and carry water up the hill.
