I never prepay my cruise gratuities. I let them post to my onboard account, keep an eye on the charges, and settle the bill before I leave the ship.
That’s why Carnival’s new sticker program gives me pause.
Carnival confirmed to Cruise Critic that it has started putting “Crew Love” stickers on the Sail & Sign cards of guests who prepaid, along with thank-you notes. The sticker says, “I pre-paid my gratuities.”
Fair enough for the person wearing it. What does a crew member — or the couple behind you at the bar — assume about a card without one?
Recognition, or an Awkward Label?
Some passengers like the acknowledgment. Others would rather keep their payment choices private, and some worry a visible sticker makes guests without one look as though they haven’t tipped.
Carnival says its crew provides great service to every guest, and that it’s listening to feedback during the pilot.
I take Carnival at its word on the intent — thanking guests is fine.
The awkward part is putting one payment method on display when there’s another perfectly normal way to pay.
Carnival’s published policy gives guests two options: prepay before the cruise, or have the recommended daily gratuity added to their Sail & Sign account during the voyage. The current amount is $17 per person, per day in a standard stateroom and $19 in a suite, for guests age two and older.
For two adults in a standard cabin on a seven-night sailing, that’s $238 at today’s rate.
Prepaying makes budgeting easier for some families, and I understand why.
I prefer to see the charge on my onboard account — and I still pay it.
Either way, it’s a payment method, not a measure of how much a guest appreciates the crew.
If someone tips individual crew members in cash, a sticker doesn’t tell that story either. Cash tips and Carnival’s daily gratuity aren’t interchangeable — the daily program also covers people working behind the scenes — but a stranger looking at a cruise card has no way of knowing what that guest has done.
Budget math
What will Carnival’s daily gratuity add?
Prepay it or let it post to your Sail & Sign account. Either way, it belongs in the budget from day one.
Uses Carnival’s published daily gratuity as of November 2, 2026: $17 per guest per day in standard staterooms and $19 in suites, for guests age two and older. Rates can change; check Carnival’s gratuity page before you sail. Bar and other onboard purchases carry their own charges, which aren’t included here.
We’ll fold the daily gratuity into one Carnival price for your whole crew, before you book.
Price my Carnival cruiseMy Take: Thank People Privately
The crew deserves to be paid and recognized. That includes the people in the galleys, the laundry and the other jobs most passengers never see.
Carnival says this pilot is meant as a thank-you, and I believe it.
I just don’t think prepaying needs a public badge. Guests should be able to choose when they pay the daily gratuity without inviting assumptions about a card that doesn’t have a sticker.
Thank people privately. Let the crew do its job. And let passengers enjoy their vacation without wearing a receipt around their necks.
