One of the biggest mistakes I see new cruisers make is choosing a cruise line based solely on its loyalty program. I understand why — cruise lines spend a lot of time advertising free perks, priority boarding, discounts, exclusive events, and even free cruises. It sounds great. The problem is that most loyalty benefits take years to earn. If you're taking one cruise every year or two, it can be a very long time before those benefits become meaningful.
Don't chase loyalty too early
If you're new to cruising, my advice is simple: try different cruise lines. Every cruise line has a different personality. A family that loves Royal Caribbean may not enjoy the same things as a couple who prefers Celebrity. Someone who values the pricing of MSC may not care about the same benefits that attract loyal Norwegian cruisers.
Before you start chasing loyalty points, figure out what type of cruising you actually enjoy. Over the years I've sailed on multiple lines and learned something from each one. If I had stayed loyal to only one brand from the beginning, I would have missed experiences that helped me understand what truly matters to my family and me. Once you know what you like, loyalty becomes much more valuable.
The most powerful loyalty shortcut most cruisers don't know about
Many travelers assume everyone starts at the bottom of a cruise loyalty program. That's not always true — and one of the most interesting examples is MSC Cruises.
MSC offers a status match program. If you have elite status with certain hotel programs, casino programs, airline programs, or other travel brands, MSC may allow you to start at a significantly higher loyalty level before you ever step foot on one of their ships. Think about what that means: you could potentially receive benefits on your very first MSC sailing that would take years to earn on other cruise lines.
This is one reason I often encourage travelers to look beyond cruise loyalty programs alone and consider their entire travel portfolio. The loyalty you've already earned elsewhere may be more valuable than you realize.
Think in cruise families, not cruise lines
This is where many travelers miss the biggest opportunity. Instead of looking at a single cruise line, think about the entire family of brands behind it.
Royal Caribbean Group
Many travelers know Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, but fewer realize how broad the ecosystem has become. Loyalty can potentially benefit travelers across Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Silversea, and Celebrity River Cruises — a journey that can take you from mainstream cruising all the way to luxury and river travel within the same family of brands.
Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings
Norwegian's loyalty program can open doors beyond Norwegian Cruise Line itself. The family includes Norwegian, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas. This creates an interesting progression path — a traveler may start on Norwegian and eventually move into premium or luxury cruising while staying connected to the same corporate ecosystem.
MSC Group
MSC has one of the most interesting growth stories in the industry. Today the family includes MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys. For travelers interested in luxury cruising, Explora represents a completely different level of experience — and the relationship between the two brands creates opportunities many travelers don't realize exist.
Which loyalty program is best?
It depends on your goals. If you want to maximize value from your very first cruise, MSC's status match program may be difficult to beat. If you cruise frequently, Norwegian's Latitudes Rewards and Royal Caribbean's Crown & Anchor Society become very rewarding over time. And if you're interested in eventually moving into premium or luxury cruising, the broader family relationships become extremely important.
My take
If I were starting from scratch today, I would not choose a cruise line because of its loyalty program. I would choose the line that offered the best experience for my travel style, budget, and vacation goals — and then use loyalty strategically from there.
Used the right way, loyalty programs aren't just about discounts, priority boarding, or onboard perks. They can help you journey further — into premium experiences, into luxury travel, further with your budget, and closer to the bucket-list trips you've always had in mind.
That's why understanding loyalty programs isn't about collecting points. It's about using them as a tool to make every journey go a little further.
