Seabound Journeys · Resort Brand Guide

Excellence Resorts

In a field of chains, Excellence is the independent — family-owned, adults-only, all-suite at every property, and anchored in Mexico, not the Caribbean. Its reputation rests almost entirely on dinner, and that reputation is deserved.

01

How Excellence Resorts scores

Excellence is the most uniform brand in this guide series by some distance: six adults-only resorts, every room a suite, no surcharge on any restaurant, one family-run company behind all of it. If you collect hotel points, look elsewhere — there is nothing here to collect. If you want the room you booked to be the room you get, at every property, no mainstream rival delivers it more reliably.

Seabound Fit Profile · Excellence Resorts1–10 scale

Adults-only means eighteen and over. It doesn't mean couples-only — solo travelers and friend groups book freely; the couples-only brand inside this company is a separate, single-property label.

The sport score is the honest counterweight to the food score. Non-motorized watersports are included and almost nothing else is — scuba instruction, deep-sea fishing and private yacht trips are all asterisked as extra, and golf isn't included even where a course sits next door. Against Sandals, which bundles diving and motorized sports, this is the clearest trade you are making.

02

The dining reputation, assessed properly

Excellence is widely described as a step up on food. That is defensible. The reason usually given for it is not.

What is verifiable. The flagship runs nine à la carte restaurants plus a buffet, with eleven bars — one of the nine, Las Olas, doubles as the lunchtime beach grill and wood-fired pizza counter. Dinner is all à la carte — the buffet operates at breakfast and converts to an Italian taverna at lunch, so there is no dinner buffet in the lineup at all. No venue carries a surcharge. The cuisine spread is unusually wide for the segment, running to French, contemporary Indian, teppanyaki, a lobster house and a steakhouse. Restaurants enforce real dress codes, which supports the positioning rather than merely asserting it.

The claim that is simply wrong

The most repeated Excellence-versus-Secrets differentiator is that Excellence doesn't require restaurant reservations and Secrets does. That is false. Secrets markets walk-in à la carte dining as an explicit brand promise — and Excellence itself requires a reservation for its teppanyaki experience. Do not build a decision on it. The genuine dining edge here is the all-à-la-carte dinner service with no surcharge venues — not the booking policy.

What is marketing. We could find no third-party culinary credential attached to any Excellence property — no Michelin recognition, no restaurant-level AAA diamonds, no named celebrity chef. Words like "gourmet" are the company's own. The group does hold genuine third-party recognition — EarthCheck sustainability certification, Great Place to Work designations, and a AAA Four Diamond rating for the flagship hotel — but none of it assesses the food. That doesn't make the food worse; it means the case for it should rest on venue count, à la carte service and the absence of upcharges — all checkable — and not on credentials that don't exist.

03

The ladder, and where the villas actually sit

Because every room is already a suite, the ladder is unusual: the first step buys outdoor space, and only the second buys service. There are really two rungs, not three — the villas sit at the top of the second.

Step 1

Excellence Suites

Every property is all-suite, so there is no plain room category to avoid. Within standard inventory you are buying outdoor product and view — not service: junior suite, then swim-up access, then a private plunge pool, then a two-story rooftop terrace. Dining access, inclusions and service level are identical across all of them.
Step 2

Excellence Club

The meaningful jump, and it is booked by selecting a Club suite category — not by paying a separate membership. It buys physical exclusivity: a private beach area, club-only pools and jacuzzis, and club-exclusive restaurants and bars. Plus a private lounge with its own front desk, private check-in, upgraded in-suite liquor and wine, an enhanced minibar, an upgraded room-service menu, better toiletries and coffee, and one hydrotherapy treatment per person per stay.
Top of Step 2

The beach villas

Currently only at the Jamaica property, and worth getting right: these sit in the top Excellence Club suite category, not a rung above Club. They add a private pool and butler service on top of the standard Club benefits. Inventory here is expanding sharply under a major Jamaica investment program.
What that included hydrotherapy treatment implies

Excellence Club includes one hydrotherapy session per person per stay. That inclusion strongly implies hydrotherapy is chargeable for everyone else. Excellence doesn't publish clearly whether general access to the wet circuit — saunas, steam, plunge pools — is free to non-Club guests, so verify it at your property if the spa is part of why you are going.

04

The three brands, and the trap inside them

The Excellence Collection runs three labels, and the relationship between them produces the single most useful piece of insider knowledge about the company.

BrandWho it takesWhat it is
Excellence ResortsAdults 18+The flagship. Six all-suite resorts. Open to couples, friends and solo travelers alike.
Finest ResortsAll agesThe family label. Kids clubs, water parks, splash parks.
Beloved HotelsCouples onlyA single boutique property, and the strictest label in the company — not merely adults-only but marketed explicitly for two.
The most missed relationship in the company

"Excellence Club" is a tier name that crosses brands. The adults-only Excellence Club exists inside the family Finest resorts as a walled-off adults section with its own beach, pool, lounge and restaurants — the company describes it as an adults-only resort within a resort. Two consequences: booking "Excellence Club" doesn't necessarily mean you are at an adults-only Excellence resort, and a mixed-generation group can travel together with the adults in the club section and the family in the main resort. Finest publishes the age for its Excellence Club section: eighteen and over.

05

What is genuinely included

IncludedThe detail that matters
Every restaurant, no surchargeNine à la carte venues plus the buffet at the flagship. No specialty-dining fee tier exists anywhere in the brand.
Premium spirits in the base packageInternational premium and domestic drinks are in the standard rate, not sold as an upgrade — a real distinction from several rivals.
24-hour room serviceIncluded, with an upgraded menu at Club level.
Taxes and gratuitiesBoth stated as included, with no butler-tip carve-out of the kind Sandals operates.
Wi-FiFree across suites and public areas.
Non-motorized watersportsKayaks, snorkel gear, sailing, paddleboards, plus an introductory scuba lesson in the pool.
A wide activity rosterTennis and clinics, pickleball, beach volleyball, archery, cooking and dance lessons, guided fat-bike tours, nightly theater.
Airport transfers — conditionallyIncluded at every Excellence resort on direct bookings of three nights or more, covering the Cancun, Punta Cana and Montego Bay airports. See the caveat below.
The transfer condition most people miss

Transfers are included on direct bookings of three-plus nights — and excluded when you book through a third party or as part of a flight package, which is how a large share of guests actually book. If you are buying through an online travel agent or a tour operator, assume you are paying for the transfer.

06

What still costs money

The upcharges here are concentrated outside food and drink, which is the opposite of most of the segment.

Not includedNotes
Scuba with instructionExplicitly asterisked as extra. Only the introductory pool lesson is free — and there is no free program for certified divers of the kind Sandals runs.
Deep-sea fishing and private yacht tripsBoth flagged as extra cost on the brand's own activities page.
Motorized watersportsJet ski, waterskiing, parasailing. Only non-motorized is in the rate.
All spa treatmentsChargeable, with an online-booking discount advertised — which itself confirms the spa is a paid revenue center.
GolfNot included. Guests book tee times directly with the course, even where one adjoins the resort.
Private romantic dinnersArranged for an additional cost despite the all-inclusive rate.
WeddingsA paid product. The gazebo is a facility, not an event.
Transfers on third-party bookingsSee above. It catches people out constantly.

A few things we could not confirm either way and have left open: whether private cabana rentals are charged, whether the top of the wine list sits above the included selection, and whether any resort fee exists. No resort fee is disclosed on the brand's FAQs and taxes are stated as included, which suggests not — but the absence of a statement isn't the same as a statement.

07

Where Excellence is

Three countries, and a Mexican center of gravity that is the main difference from the Caribbean-only brands.

Counted across the whole collection, not the Excellence brand alone: four properties cluster at Playa Mujeres north of Cancun, two more sit in the Riviera Maya and Puerto Morelos area, three are in the Dominican Republic, and one is in Jamaica near Falmouth. A newly opened Excellence-branded resort joined the Playa Mujeres cluster in 2025 — and a third Finest property is slated for the Riviera Maya in early 2027.

Two counting notes

The company's own About page still says eight resorts while its own index lists ten — the About figure appears stale. And the Jamaica property's FAQ says nine restaurants while the collection page says twelve. Both are the company's own pages; we would treat the higher counts with mild caution and verify at booking. One more thing: Excellence Riviera Cancun is not in Cancun — it sits well south near Puerto Morelos, a different area entirely from the Playa Mujeres cluster.

08

Loyalty: a perks scheme, not a currency

This is the clearest difference from Secrets, and it cuts both ways.

Excellence runs its own five-tier rewards program — Member, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond — free to join, offering suite upgrades, spa discounts, in-suite gifts and complimentary premium beverages. What it is not is a transferable points currency. You cannot earn toward flights, you can't redeem points from a credit card, and status does not travel to any other hotel.

The honest trade

If you collect hotel points, Secrets is inside World of Hyatt and Excellence is inside nothing. If you don't, Excellence's independence buys you something Secrets cannot: a small, uniform, single-owner portfolio where the standard doesn't depend on which third party happens to own the building.

09

Where it sits, and what the step up costs

Excellence sits in the premium band, with the Playa Mujeres flagship and its club tier reaching into luxury — and because every room is already a suite, the one upgrade that matters is priced as a clean supplement, not a room swap.

Sub-brand or tierWhere it sits
Excellence ResortsPremium. Adults-only, all-suite, AAA Four Diamond at the flagship.
Excellence Playa Mujeres, and Excellence Club anywhereLuxury edge. Prices with the top of the Cancun-area premium set.
Finest ResortsPremium, family-facing. Same company, all ages.
Beloved HotelsPremium boutique. Couples-only, single property.

Base suite → Excellence Club runs roughly a fifth to two-fifths above the base rate. Because the base is already a suite, this is one of the cleaner upgrades to judge in the whole segment — you are buying the private beach, the club pools, the club-only restaurants and the lounge — not a bigger room with some perks attached to it.

How to read these

No figures on this page are quoted by the brands. None of them publishes an official upgrade percentage, so every proportion here is derived from comparing published category rates across properties. Treat a step that buys a different room product — a suite instead of a room, a swim-up instead of a standard — as durable, because the scarcity behind it doesn't move. Treat a step sold as a flat per-night supplement as volatile: as a proportion it widens whenever the base rate falls, in a promotion or in low season, and compresses at peak. Because every room here is already a suite, the club step is the only upgrade there is to price, which makes it unusually clean to judge.

10

Who Excellence Resorts fits — and who should look elsewhere

Book it if

You care most about dinner. The all-à-la-carte dinner service and the complete absence of surcharge restaurants are checkable advantages — and the all-suite inventory means there is no bad room category to accidentally book. It also suits travelers who want Mexico specifically, and adults traveling as friends rather than as a couple.

11

If you asked us to pick

Best value step

Excellence Club

Private beach, club-only pools and restaurants, a lounge with its own front desk, and one hydrotherapy session per person. On a busy week it is the difference between the resort feeling full and feeling calm.

Best kept secret

The club inside a Finest resort

A genuine adults-only enclave inside a family property. For a multigenerational group that wants to travel together without sharing a pool with a splash park, nothing else here does it as cleanly.

Watch for

The transfer condition

Book direct for three nights or more and the airport transfer is included. Book through a third party and it is not; this catches a large share of guests.

Keep exploring

One rival comes up more than all the others combined when people are weighing Excellence — and there is a dedicated head-to-head for exactly that decision.

14

Quick answers

Is Excellence couples-only?

No. Excellence is adults-only, eighteen and over, and open to solo travelers, friends and adult groups. The couples-only label inside the same company is Beloved, which is a single boutique property. Solo travelers should still check the single-occupancy terms, which are priced separately from the double rate.

Is the food genuinely better at Excellence?

The advantage is real but uncredentialed. Dinner is all à la carte with no dinner buffet, no venue carries a surcharge, the flagship runs nine à la carte restaurants plus a buffet, and the cuisine spread is unusually wide. There is no Michelin recognition and no culinary award — the group's third-party recognition covers sustainability and workplace, not food — so judge it on those checkable facts.

Do you need reservations at Excellence restaurants?

Mostly no — but the widely repeated claim that this distinguishes Excellence from Secrets is wrong. Secrets also markets walk-in à la carte dining — and Excellence itself requires a reservation for its teppanyaki experience. Book the teppanyaki on arrival day; it is the one venue that fills.

What does Excellence Club actually include?

A private beach and club-only pools, club-exclusive restaurants and bars, a private lounge with its own front desk, private check-in, upgraded in-suite liquor and minibar, an upgraded room-service menu, and one hydrotherapy treatment per person per stay. It is booked by choosing a Club suite — not as a separate fee. Its value rises sharply in high season, when the private beach and club pool are the difference between calm and crowded.

Are airport transfers included?

Conditionally. Across the brand they are included on direct bookings of three nights or more — Cancun, Punta Cana and Montego Bay airports — and excluded when you book through a third party or as part of a flight package, which is how many guests actually book. Check how your booking channel affects it. If you are comparing a direct booking against a packaged one, count the transfer both ways before deciding.

Is scuba diving included at Excellence?

No. Only an introductory pool lesson is free. Scuba with instruction, deep-sea fishing and private yacht excursions are all explicitly extra cost — and there is no free program for certified divers of the kind Sandals runs.

Is Excellence part of a big hotel chain?

No. It is a privately held, family-run group headquartered in Miami, operating as a joint investment between three Spanish-linked companies. It runs its own five-tier rewards scheme and doesn't take part in any global points program. If collecting points matters to you, that alone may decide this against Secrets.
