Hakodate

Hakodate has three cruise wharves, and the one you get shapes the whole day. Most ships use Wakamatsu Wharf, where a cruise terminal opened in 2022 and you can walk to JR Hakodate Station and the morning market beside it. The biggest ships go to Minato-cho Wharf instead — about 20 minutes by car from the station, so the shuttle or a taxi comes first. From the station, the city tram does most of the work.

Hakodate in brief

Hakodate is a station-side port, as long as your ship is mid-sized.

The city sorts cruise ships by tonnage. Ships under about 30,000 tons can use Nishi Wharf, ships up to about 120,000 tons use Wakamatsu, and anything bigger goes to Minato-cho — the city calls that split a rough guide, not a rule.

Wakamatsu is the berth you want.

The Hakodate Cruise Terminal opened there in September 2022, on the old Seikan ferry berth beside the museum ship Mashu Maru. It opens only when a ship is in, and it’s for passengers, not the public.

Inside you’ll find tourist information, restrooms, the immigration and customs desks and a waiting area that looks up at Mt. Hakodate.

From the gangway you can walk to JR Hakodate Station, and the morning market sits a few steps from the station.

Minato-cho is a drive, not a walk.

It’s the big-ship wharf, about 6.5 km out and roughly 20 minutes by car from the station. The port lists shuttle buses into town, but no route, frequency or fare is published — your ship will tell you on the day.

Sailing on one of the big ships? The tonnage rule points those at Minato-cho — so check your berth before you plan breakfast at the market.

The tram ties the town together.

From the station, one route runs toward Motomachi and the foot of the ropeway, while others head out to Goryokaku and the Yunokawa hot springs. A day pass is about ¥600.

Which tours earn their fare, and which just drive you between tram stops, is what our Hakodate shore excursion guide sorts out. Read it before you book through the ship.

From the wharf into town

Docked
Wakamatsu Wharf, by the station

The main cruise berth, for ships up to about 120,000 tons. The terminal building, opened in 2022, sits beside the Mashu Maru ferry museum.

Docked
Minato-cho Wharf, for the largest ships

The berth for ships over about 120,000 tons. It’s about 6.5 km from the center — roughly 20 minutes by car to JR Hakodate Station.

Docked
Nishi Wharf, for small ships

Used by ships under about 30,000 tons. The regional transport bureau puts it about 15 minutes from the station by streetcar.

On foot
Wakamatsu to the station and market

The station is a walk from the pier, and the market starts a few steps from the station. The city puts the wider sightseeing area — market, Bay Area and Motomachi together — about 1.5 km, or 20 minutes on foot.

¥600
One-day tram pass

Single tram rides run about ¥210 to ¥260 by distance. Suica, ICOCA and the local nimoca card work too.

Shuttle
From Minato-cho only

The port lists shuttle buses from the wharf to downtown. At Wakamatsu, it’s a walk, not a ride.

The first three on that list are walkable from Wakamatsu — the Red Brick Warehouses are about 15 to 20 minutes from the station on foot.

Motomachi and the ropeway sit at the foot of the mountain, about a 5-minute tram ride from the station. Goryokaku is about 15 minutes out by tram, and Onuma, about 20 km north, is a train ride of roughly 30 to 40 minutes — a day trip, not an add-on.

Commonly reached from

Hakodate sits at the southern tip of Hokkaido, on Japan sailings that often start in Tokyo/Yokohama — our Tokyo cruise port guide covers that end. October 2026 brought about 15 calls, from Norwegian, Holland America, Seabourn, Royal Caribbean, Silversea, Regent, Costa, Princess and the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, and September added Diamond Princess and Spectrum of the Seas. Other Japanese calls on the same kind of route include Shimizu and Nagasaki. See how the region fits together on our Asia cruises hub, or open Hakodate on the Seabound Cruise Atlas.

Practical notes

Current as of October 23, 2026 Review periodically

Carry yen — not every stall takes cards.

The currency is the Japanese yen. Holland America warns that many vendors take neither credit cards nor US dollars, and the regional port page says there’s no currency exchange at the wharf itself.

Draw or change cash before the market, not at it.

The tram is the easy way around.

Hakodate’s trams run from about 6:00 to 23:30. A single ride costs about ¥210 to ¥260, a one-day tram pass ¥600, and a digital tram-and-bus day pass ¥1,400.

IC cards work on trams and city buses, not the airport shuttle bus.

The Hakodate Special Ticket bundles a tram day pass with sight credits.

It costs ¥3,700 and is valid through March 31, 2027. You get a tram day pass plus 12 points — a ropeway round trip takes 7, Goryokaku Tower takes 4. Buy it at the tourist information center in JR Hakodate Station, open 9:00 to 18:00.

Taxis: agree the fare first.

For Minato-cho, use the ship’s shuttle if one runs, and settle a taxi price before a longer ride.

The US advisory for Japan is Level 1 — normal precautions.

The State Department’s advisory, issued May 15, 2025, flags earthquakes and typhoons, mainly summer through fall, and heavy winter snow in the north. It also warns that some US prescription drugs, Adderall among them, are illegal in Japan.

US citizens can visit visa-free for up to 90 days. On a ship designated for Japan’s cruise landing permit, the line handles it — sightseeing only, and back aboard before each departure.

Watch the ropeway’s fall maintenance.

The Mt. Hakodate Ropeway shuts for maintenance each autumn — October 20 to November 8 this season. Holland America and Seabourn have both swapped in a coach up the mountain for their late-October 2026 calls.
