Yes. This is the detail that is easiest to miss when comparing Universal hotel prices.
Imagine you reserve Royal Pacific for Monday night.
Monday: Check-In Day
Arrive early, complete the hotel’s arrival/check-in process, store your bags if necessary, and head to the parks. You don’t have to wait until the normal afternoon room-availability time to begin using the Express benefit.
Monday Night
Sleep at Royal Pacific.
Tuesday: Check-Out Day
Check out of the hotel. Your Express benefit doesn’t disappear when you leave the room; it remains valid until the theme parks close that day. Spend Tuesday in the parks riding with Express Unlimited, then grab your bags and head to your next destination.
That’s two Express days generated by a one-night reservation.
Which Universal Hotels Give You Free Express Unlimited?
Only three Universal Orlando hotels currently include this specific benefit:
Loews Royal Pacific Resort: Royal Pacific is the one I check first when the objective is maximizing Express value. It offers a full-service resort experience within easy reach of the original parks.
Hard Rock Hotel: Hard Rock’s biggest advantage is location. It is exceptionally close to Universal Studios Florida, making it particularly attractive if maximizing park time is your top priority.
Loews Portofino Bay Hotel: Portofino Bay is the most luxurious option of the three, with an Italian-inspired setting and a true destination-resort feel.
What Kind of Express Pass Do You Get?
This isn’t the basic version of Universal Express that limits you to one Express use per attraction. The hotel benefit is Universal Express Unlimited.
That means you can use the Express queue repeatedly at participating attractions. If your kids want to ride the VelociCoaster three times in a row, they can. You’re not comparing the hotel against the cheapest line-skipping product; you’re comparing it against top-tier Express Unlimited.
The Catch: What Parks Are Excluded?
This is the biggest limitation to the strategy. The hotel benefit currently works only at Universal Studios Florida and Universal Islands of Adventure.
Universal explicitly excludes Universal Epic Universe and Universal Volcano Bay from this complimentary hotel Express benefit. If you’re spending most of your Universal vacation exploring Epic Universe's new portals, do not book one of these three hotels assuming it will grant you Epic Express. It won’t.
The 1-Night Split-Stay Strategy
Here’s where this gets interesting for a longer Orlando vacation. You don’t have to stay at a Signature Collection hotel for five or seven nights just because you want Express. You can split the trip.
Example: Universal First, Disney Second
- Day 1: Check into Royal Pacific early. Hit Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure with Express Unlimited all day.
- Day 2: Check out. Enjoy your second Universal park day with Express. That evening, move to your Disney resort.
- Day 3 onward: Begin the Disney portion of the vacation.
Instead of choosing between a Universal hotel and a Disney hotel for the entire trip, you’re using each hotel for the portion of the vacation where its operational benefits matter most.
Why the Math Gets So Good for Families
Hotel rooms are generally priced by the room. Express passes are priced per person.
As a dad of four, I know firsthand how quickly per-person upcharges can decimate a family vacation budget. If you have four or five people in a room that legally accommodates them, the room cost doesn’t multiply by five—but buying separate Express passes absolutely does.
The Right Way to Calculate the Savings
Don’t compare the Universal hotel price to $0 (you need somewhere to sleep anyway). Instead, calculate your true upgrade cost:
(Qualifying Universal Hotel Price) - (Price of the hotel you otherwise would have booked) = Your Real Upgrade Cost

- Nearby hotel: $225
- Royal Pacific: $525
- Actual upgrade cost: $300
Now price out two days of Express Unlimited for a family of four or five. On expensive dates, that total can climb past $1,000. Paying a $300 room premium to secure $1,000+ worth of Express passes is a massive financial win—plus, you get to stay at a fantastic hotel.
A quick caveat: If you are a family that would happily wait in standby lines and would never actually spend the money on Express, the retail value of the passes isn't your true savings. It's a great perk, but don't pretend you "saved" $1,000 if you never intended to spend it.
Is Changing Hotels Worth the Hassle?
Changing hotels takes time. You have to pack, store luggage, and settle into a new room. For a $50 savings? Probably not. For several hundred dollars in effective value? Now it’s worth discussing. Evaluate if the pack-up-and-move routine fits your family's travel style before committing to a split stay.

One night at the right Universal Orlando hotel is the most efficient way to unlock two days of Universal Express Unlimited. The magic is in the timing: because your Express benefit begins on check-in day and continues through park closing on check-out day, a one-night reservation covers two consecutive Universal park days.

Does the strategy work at Epic Universe?

Is a one-night stay cheaper than buying Express outright?
