Ibiza

Ibiza puts its cruise ships on the far side of the harbor, not under the old town. Most calls berth at Botafoc, about 2 miles (3 km) from the historic center by the harbor road. A City Boat crosses the water to Plaça d’es Martell, a Port Bus and a taxi rank serve the maritime station, and ships enter port from 11:30 unless the port authority grants an exception. Dalt Vila, the walled upper town, is the payoff — and it’s a steady climb from the gate.

Ibiza in brief

Ibiza Town — Eivissa in Catalan — is two places on one harbor.

The old walled town sits on its hill, and your ship most likely sits across the water from it — on the breakwater, not under the walls.

The port authority puts cruise traffic in the Botafoc area: the sea wall, its pontoons and the dock beside them. The other docks are kept for the regular ferry lines.

Smaller ships can still berth closer in.

Local press describes the older breakwater as able to take one extra, smaller cruise ship, and secondary guides put small-ship passengers ashore near the old town quays. Check your line’s port notes, not a general guide, to see which side you’re on.

2026 was planned as the busiest season in years, with a cap on the flow.

The Autoritat Portuària de Balears planned about 205 calls for 2026 — nearly 25% more than the 165 ships of 2025, according to La Voz de Ibiza. Most days were set for one or two ships, with three on specific dates.

Disembarkation is planned to stay under about 3,000 passengers an hour, so the Port Bus, the city buses and the taxis aren’t swamped at once. On a busy day, that means your ship’s gangway time may be slotted, not first come.

An afternoon call, by design.

Ships enter port from 11:30 unless the port authority has authorized an exception. Plan the old town for the afternoon, and keep the evening for the harbor if your ship stays late.

From Botafoc to the old town

Docked
Botafoc sea wall and pontoons

The cruise berths sit on the Botafoc side of the harbor, on a breakwater La Voz de Ibiza says was built in 2003 and takes up to three large ships — tied up, not tendered.

∼35–40 min
On foot to town

About 2 miles (3 km) along the harbor road, mostly flat with little shade, according to the Adventour Begins guide. The port authority publishes no walking time — doable, though in summer heat the boat or the bus is kinder.

City Boat
Across the harbor to es Martell

A sea shuttle crosses from the Botafoc area to Plaça d’es Martell in the town center, awarded to Trasmapi in 2024. No fare or timetable is published on the port authority’s pages — ask at the pontoon.

Port Bus
Around the harbor by road

Sagalés runs the Port Bus between the Botafoc docks, the Formentera ferry station and the commercial docks, timed to ship movements. We found no published fare — a secondary guide says tickets come from the driver.

Taxi
Rank at the Botafoc maritime station

Metered, with a flag fall, a per-kilometer rate and a port supplement, and about 10 minutes to town by a secondary guide’s count. La Voz de Ibiza says taxis and buses at the station run short once disembarkation passes about 3,000 passengers an hour — the same figure the port is trying to stay under.

Uphill
Portal de ses Taules into Dalt Vila

The main gate, named for the planks of its old drawbridge, opens onto cobbles and steps that climb to the cathedral at the top. Portal Nou is described as the gentler way in — gentler, not flat.

What's nearby, broadly

Dalt Vila Portal de ses Taules Ibiza Cathedral Santa Llúcia bastion MACE contemporary art museum Museu Puget Puig des Molins necropolis La Marina quarter Talamanca beach Ses Salines Natural Park Sant Antoni de Portmany Formentera

The first eight are in Ibiza Town, on foot. Dalt Vila has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, and the tourism board maps three walking routes through it — a classic circuit from the main gate to the cathedral square, one along the bastions and a third, lesser-known one.

Talamanca is the beach a secondary guide puts a short walk from Botafoc — close to the ship by that account, not to the old town.

Ses Salines, the salt-flat natural park in the south, is where Las Salinas beach sits — about a 10-minute drive from town by one trade guide’s reckoning. Sant Antoni sits on the west coast, and Formentera is the island to the south, about 30 minutes away by ferry.

Ibiza sits on Western Mediterranean itineraries, usually beside Palma de Mallorca, Valencia, Alicante, Cartagena and Barcelona. Our published line list shows Costa and MSC as the regulars, with Norwegian, Princess, Virgin Voyages, Explora and others calling seasonally — a mix of big-ship and small-ship lines. CruiseMapper’s schedule counted about 31 calls for July 2027 and one for March, so the season runs spring through autumn. See the region on our Mediterranean cruises hub, or open Ibiza on the Seabound Cruise Atlas.

Practical notes

Current as of October 28, 2026 Review periodically

Euros, and a taxi tariff in flux.

Spain uses the euro. When La Voz de Ibiza reported in late May 2026, island taxis ran on a €4.00 flag fall, €1.21 a kilometer by day and a €2.00 port or airport supplement.

A May 2026 proposal from the Consell would lift those to €4.30, €1.32 and €2.15, with the night rate going from €1.47 to €1.60. It still needed final approval when reported, and we couldn’t confirm it took effect — read the fare card in the cab.

Museum hours weren’t published where we looked.

The tourism board’s Dalt Vila routes name the MACE, the Museu Puget and the Madina Yabisa interpretation center, but list no hours or prices. The walled town itself is a public neighborhood — you walk in through the gate.

The archaeological museum’s Dalt Vila building has been shut since 2010, a 2024 regional report says; the Puig des Molins necropolis, in the same UNESCO listing, is the other archaeological site — check its hours before you head there.

Many shops close for an afternoon break, roughly 2 to 4 p.m., by one trade guide’s account. With ships arriving from 11:30, that break can land in the middle of your shopping time.

The US advisory for Spain is Level 2.

The US Embassy in Spain’s site shows the State Department advisory at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, for terrorism and unrest, when we checked on October 28, 2026.

US citizens need no visa for stays under 90 days. The State Department wants your passport valid three months past departure and recommends six.

The EU’s Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since April 10, 2026, recording a facial image and/or fingerprints at external borders. The EU’s material doesn’t spell out how it treats a cruise call — your line will tell you if there’s a check.

ETIAS isn’t in operation, and the EU hasn’t named a start date; it says it will announce one several months ahead. Check travel-europe.europa.eu before you fly.

Spring to autumn is the season.

CruiseMapper’s schedule shows about 20 calls in October 2026, seven in November and one in December, then a climb from about 17 in April 2027 to about 31 in July.

Ibiza FAQ

Where do cruise ships dock in Ibiza?

Mostly at Botafoc — the sea wall, its pontoons and the dock beside them, on the far side of the harbor from the old town. Smaller ships can sometimes berth closer in.

Does Ibiza tender?

Not in normal operation; ships tie up. A secondary guide describes tendering as uncommon, used mainly when the port is full.

Can I walk from Botafoc to Ibiza Town?

You can. It’s about 2 miles (3 km), roughly 35 to 40 minutes along a mostly flat harbor road with little shade, by one guide’s estimate.

In July and August heat, the City Boat, the Port Bus or a taxi is the easier choice.

What is the City Boat?

A sea shuttle from the Botafoc area across the harbor to Plaça d’es Martell, awarded to Trasmapi by the port authority in 2024 and being reinforced in 2026, local press reports.

We found no published fare. It’s a commercial service, so expect to pay — ask at the pontoon.

How much is a taxi from the Ibiza cruise port?

There’s no fixed port-to-town fare. Taxis run on a meter with a flag fall, a per-kilometer rate and a port supplement of about €2 — a May 2026 proposal would raise it to €2.15.

Why do ships arrive in Ibiza at midday?

The port authority lets cruise ships enter from 11:30 unless it authorizes an exception, and staggers them around the regular ferries. Expect an afternoon and evening ashore, not a morning.

Is Dalt Vila hard to walk?

It’s a hill town with cobbles and steps, and Princess rates its Dalt Vila walking tour strenuous.

Enter by Portal Nou, the gentler gate, or take a taxi to the drop-off near the top — a secondary guide says a tunnel by the Hotel Mirador does the last stretch.

Is Ibiza safe for cruise passengers?

The State Department rates Spain Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, citing terrorism and unrest — the level the US Embassy in Spain showed on October 28, 2026.

Ordinary big-town care applies around the harbor and in La Marina — a front pocket for your phone, not a back one.
