Klaipėda in brief
Klaipėda is a lagoon-mouth port town with a half-timbered old quarter, not a capital with a cruise pier attached.
Ships dock at the Pempininkai Quay cruise terminal, right downtown, which CruiseMapper puts at a maximum length of 315 m (1,034 ft) and a draught of 8.5 m.
Anything longer anchors in the harbor and comes in by tender.
That’s a real line, not a technicality. Nearly 40% of the ships expected in 2025 were over 290 m, per LRT, and the 2026 season’s largest, Mein Schiff 7, measures 316 m — one meter past the published limit.
Ask your line which it will be, dock or tender, before you plan anything tight.
This is still a small cruise port — but it’s growing fast, and the counts show it.
The port counted about 63,000 passengers on 53 ships in 2024. For 2026 it scheduled 64 ships between May 2 and mid-October and expected around 90,000 visitors, which would be a record for Klaipėda.
A new terminal is going up next to the current quay, with two berths of 220 m and 369 m. The longer one would let much bigger ships dock instead of tendering.
When it opens is less settled than the plans. The port’s own 2026 season announcement said 2027; CruiseMapper’s write-up of the contract says 2028. Treat any date as a target, not a promise.
The day itself splits two ways. The old town and the Smiltynė side of the spit are easy on your own, while Nida and the Great Dune sit far down the peninsula.
Which of those trips earns a fare is the job of our Klaipėda shore excursion guide — read it before you book the spit.
On foot from the ship
Ships up to 315 m and 8.5 m draught tie up downtown. Longer ships anchor and tender — confirm with your line.
About half a mile, roughly 8 to 10 minutes on foot. The Childhood Dream sculpture, a boy and his dog, sits by the marina near the gangway.
Large paving stones make the walk harder than the distance suggests. A free city shuttle has been reported in the past; ask on board whether it’s running.
Home of the Ännchen von Tharau statue, with fachwerk (half-timbered) buildings from the city’s German past around it.
The passenger ferry leaves from the Old Ferry Terminal, Ernesto Galvanausko bulvaras 1. It carries people and bikes, not cars.
On foot, by bike or on a paid mini train. The Blue Flag beaches are a forest walk from the landing.
What's nearby, broadly
The first six are walkable from the terminal. The old town is laid out on a grid, with streets mostly meeting at right angles, so it’s easy to keep your bearings.
Look for the small sculptures as you go — a cat with a gentleman’s face, a wish-granting mouse, a dragon from the founding legend. John’s Hill is the one ravelin left from the old fortifications.
Smiltynė, the Sea Museum and the beaches are across the strait on the Curonian Spit, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Juodkrantė, Nida and the Parnidis dune, about 52 m above sea level, sit further down the spit — tour or bus territory, not a stroll.
Commonly reached from
Klaipėda shows up on round-Baltic itineraries that also take in calls such as Riga, Tallinn, Gdańsk and Stockholm, with embarkation ports like Copenhagen and Kiel at either end — check your own routing. The July 2027 schedule on CruiseMapper lists Windstar, Azamara, Silversea, Princess, Norwegian, MSC, Viking, Regent and Hapag-Lloyd, and the 2026 season saw Holland America’s Rotterdam and TUI’s Mein Schiff 7. Many calls run roughly 7:00 to 14:00 or 16:00, so a short day is normal here. See where it sits on the route in our Northern Europe cruises guide, or open the port’s card on the Seabound Cruise Atlas.
Planning your Klaipėda day
The tour calls — the Curonian Spit with your line, the dunes on your own, the Sea Museum, a guided old-town walk — live in their own guide, kept current on its own schedule. This page stays with the port.

Best Klaipėda shore excursions
The old town is a walk and Smiltynė is a cheap ferry. Nida and the Great Dune are a 5.5-to-6-hour day. Here’s which ones earn the time.

The currency is the euro, and has been since 2015.
Carry a few coins or a small note for the ferry. We didn’t find an official statement on card acceptance at the kiosk, so don’t bet the crossing on plastic.
The Smiltynė ferry is the cheap part of the day — but its fare depends on who you ask.
Lithuania’s tourism board lists €1.50 for the foot-and-bike ferry. Older listings from 2022 and 2023 show €1.20 return and €1.30. Expect something in that range and check the board at the terminal.
The crossing takes under 10 minutes. Driving across? That’s the New Ferry Terminal on Nemuno str. 8, about €20 a car per the tourism board.
We found no published taxi fare for the port, so agree a price with the driver before the door shuts, not at the other end.
The Sea Museum is the main paid sight across the water.
From January 2026, adult entry to the museum and aquarium is €9.00 from September to May and €13.00 in June to August. Dolphin shows are a separate ticket — €17.00 for an adult in summer.
Hours change by season. In October and November it opens Friday to Sunday only, 10:30 to 17:00, so a midweek fall call may find it shut.
The tourist information center sits on Turgaus g. 7, near Theatre Square, and a mobile kiosk has handed out maps on the pier during calls. Check current hours locally.
Entry and safety, briefly — Schengen rules apply.
US citizens can stay up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa, with a passport valid three months past departure. The EU’s Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since April 10, 2026; ETIAS isn’t running yet and has no announced start date — check travel-europe.europa.eu before you fly.
The State Department’s national advisory for Lithuania is Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, as the US Embassy in Vilnius showed it on October 29, 2026; travel.state.gov didn’t load for us, so the issue date is unconfirmed. In an emergency, dial 112.
The cruise season runs roughly May to mid-October, though 2025’s opened in February. Pack a windproof layer for the ferry, whatever the month.

Klaipėda FAQ
Where do cruise ships dock in Klaipėda?
At the Pempininkai Quay cruise terminal, downtown. It takes ships up to about 315 m long.
Longer ships anchor in the harbor and bring you in by tender, so check your ship’s length or ask the line.
Can I walk from the ship to the old town?
Yes — the center is about 800 m away, which takes roughly 8 to 10 minutes on foot.
The cobblestones are big, though — wear proper shoes, not sandals.
How do I get to the Curonian Spit?
Take the passenger ferry from the Old Ferry Terminal on Ernesto Galvanausko bulvaras. The crossing to Smiltynė takes under 10 minutes.
For Nida, further down the spit, a tour is the simple option. Holland America’s runs 6 hours.
How much is the ferry to Smiltynė?
The national tourism board lists €1.50 for foot passengers and bikes. Older sources quote a little less, so confirm the price at the terminal on the day.
Is the Sea Museum open on my call?
It depends on the month. In October and November it opens Friday to Sunday only, 10:30 to 17:00.
For a summer call, check the museum’s own site for that month’s days and show times.
Will my ship tender in Klaipėda?
Mainly if it’s too long for the current berth, which tops out at 315 m and 8.5 m draught. Ships within those limits normally dock, but your line makes the call.
A new terminal with a 369 m quay is under construction. Its finish date has been reported as both 2027 and 2028.
Do I need cash in Klaipėda?
A little. The ferry fare is small, and card payment at the kiosk is unconfirmed.
Lithuania uses the euro, so euros from home or a local ATM will do.
Is Klaipėda a busy cruise port?
Not by big-port standards. It handled about 63,000 passengers on 53 ships in 2024.
The 2026 season aimed for a record of around 90,000, across 64 scheduled ships.
