Destination Port Guide · Kushiro, Hokkaido

Kushiro

Kushiro has two cruise berths, and ship size shapes which one you get. At the downtown terminal, Fisherman’s Wharf MOO is about a five-minute walk and Washo Market roughly 12 to 15 minutes. At West Area No. 4 Wharf, about 15 minutes out by car, you start with a shuttle. The marsh and Lake Akan are the bigger prizes, and both need a plan.

Docked — downtown terminal or West Area No. 4 Wharf
Walkability
Good from the downtown terminal; a shuttle or taxi first from No. 4 Wharf
Excursion dependence

01

Kushiro in brief

Kushiro is a small port with a big landscape behind it — the town is the warm-up, not the main event.

The town sits on the Pacific side of eastern Hokkaido, and ships use one of two berths. The downtown terminal has been in service since 2011, beside Fisherman’s Wharf MOO on the Kushiro River, while larger passenger ships that cannot reach that shore go to West Area No. 4 Wharf instead.

The downtown terminal is the easy one.

The Kushiro-Lake Akan tourism site puts Fisherman’s Wharf MOO about five minutes away on foot and Washo Market about 15, though the Japan Tourism Agency’s sheet says 12 minutes and about 0.6 miles (1 km) — plan on a quarter of an hour at a relaxed pace.

MOO holds souvenirs, seafood and sweets on the ground floor and restaurants above. Washo Market is where visitors build katte-don, a rice bowl you top yourself with seafood.

No. 4 Wharf is a drive, not a walk.

The tourism site says it sits about 15 minutes by car from downtown, and that a shuttle bus runs from Fisherman’s Wharf MOO whenever a cruise ship is docked there — the page does not name the other stop, so read your ship’s daily program.

The wetland is the reason most people come.

Kushiro Marsh is Japan’s largest wetland and a national park since 1987, and the observatory is about 20 minutes away by taxi — a short ride, not a short day.

Lake Akan is another story, since the Japan Tourism Agency sheet puts it about 73 km (45 miles) and 90 minutes by car from the berth each way.

Which tours earn their fare, and which are just long drives, is what our Kushiro shore excursion guide sorts out. Read it before you book through the ship.

From the berth into town

Docked
Downtown terminal, Kushiro River

The earthquake-resistant terminal, in service since 2011, sits in the center of town next to Fisherman’s Wharf MOO — JR Kushiro Station is about 15 minutes on foot, per the Japan Tourism Agency’s port page.

Docked
West Area No. 4 Wharf

Takes the larger passenger ships, and sits about a 15-minute drive from downtown — a shuttle or taxi, not a walk.

5 min
Fisherman’s Wharf MOO

About 400 m (a quarter mile) from the berth, with souvenirs and fresh seafood downstairs and restaurants above — the wharfside robata grill is listed as open mid-May to the end of October.

12–15 min
Washo Market

The Japan Tourism Agency sheet says 12 minutes (1 km) and the tourism site says about 15, so call it a stroll, not a hike. The market runs 8:00 to 18:00 Monday to Saturday from April to December.

Shuttle
From MOO, when a ship is at No. 4

A shuttle bus runs from Fisherman’s Wharf MOO whenever a ship is docked at No. 4 Wharf, per the tourism site — no timetable or fare is published.

Taxi
Rental booth at the terminal

Taxis can be rented at the terminal, and the ride to the marsh observatory takes about 20 minutes. No fare is published, so agree a price before you ride, not after.

What's nearby, broadly

Fisherman’s Wharf MOO Washo Market Nusamai Bridge Kobunkan Kushiro City Marsh Observatory Hosooka Viewpoint Akan International Crane Center Lake Akan Ainu Kotan village Kushiro Tairyo Donpaku (autumn festival)

The first four are on foot from the downtown terminal; Nusamai Bridge is listed at about 450 m and recommended for sunset, and Kobunkan is about 1.2 km (three-quarters of a mile) out.

The marsh is a half-day in practice, not a quick detour. The bus takes 40 minutes from Kushiro Station to the observatory stop for 690 yen, and the JR Senmo Line takes 20 minutes to Kushiro-shitsugen station for 470 yen, then about 10 minutes uphill to Hosooka — both work if you hold your return time.

Commonly reached from

Kushiro sits on the Pacific coast of eastern Hokkaido, on Japan sailings that often run through Hakodate and begin or end near Tokyo/Yokohama. Third-party schedule sites list calls in 2026 and 2027 from Holland America, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, Crystal, Explora Journeys and Princess, mostly in April, May, September and October. See how the region fits together on our Asia cruises hub, or open Kushiro on the Seabound Cruise Atlas.

Practical notes

Current as of October 29, 2026 Review periodically

Calls are long enough for the marsh. Barely.

CruiseDig shows ten calls between April 26 and October 5, 2027, arriving between 7:00 and 10:00 and leaving between 16:00 and 18:00. That’s roughly eight or nine hours ashore — and it’s a third-party schedule, not the port’s, so check your own itinerary.

Carry some yen.

The currency is the Japanese yen. The tourism site lists currency exchange and ATMs among its visitor resources, and the Hokkaido transport bureau says exchange is arranged through the port. Whether market stalls take cards isn’t published, so carry yen for the bowl.

Washo Market keeps shorter hours than you might expect.

From April to December it is open 8:00 to 18:00 Monday to Saturday and 8:00 to 16:00 on Sundays, except December, when Sundays run to 18:00. From January to March it is closed Sundays.

Holland America’s marsh tour does not operate on Sundays.

Buses to the marsh are infrequent.

japan-guide.com lists five or six buses a day to the observatory stop and calls public transport in the area limited, and the Akan International Crane Center bus runs three or four times daily for 45 minutes — a schedule to check, not to assume.

Fog is common.

Holland America describes Kushiro as known for frequent fog. A gray morning won’t spoil the market — a marsh view can go soft.

Entry for ordinary U.S. passport holders.

Japan’s foreign ministry lists the United States as visa-exempt for short stays of up to 90 days, and your passport needs to stay valid throughout the stay. Your cruise line sets its own boarding-document rules, separate from Japan’s.

The U.S. advisory for Japan is Level 1.

The State Department’s advisory for Japan as a whole, issued May 15, 2025, is Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions — a national rating, not one for Kushiro. It flags earthquakes, typhoons and heavy northern snow, and warns that some U.S. prescription drugs, Adderall among them, are illegal in Japan.
