Manila

Manila is a working port, not a cruise terminal with a town attached. Intramuros, the walled Spanish city, sits about 0.9 mile (1.5 km) from Pier 15, but the road out is trucks and dust — so you ride, not walk. One catch: sources disagree on whether ships use Pier 15 or Pier 4. Settle that before you plan anything else.

Port type
Docked — Pier 15 in South Harbor per two guides; Pier 4 in North Harbor per CruiseMapper
Walkability
Low — Intramuros is about 0.9 mile (1.5 km) away over a road with no sidewalks
Excursion dependence
Moderate — a Grab and a few entry tickets can replace a tour in the walled city
Authority
Philippine Ports Authority; Intramuros Administration; Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs

Manila in brief

Manila shows up on Asia itineraries as a long single day, with at least one overnight in the 2027 schedules we read.

The berth is the first question — and our sources don’t agree.

Bucket List Guides and Gangwaze both put large ships at Manila South Harbor, with Bucket List naming Pier 15, the Eva Macapagal Super Terminal. CruiseMapper says the proper cruise facility is the North Port Passenger Terminal at Pier 4 in North Harbor, and calls Pier 15 a temporary arrangement shared with cargo and coast guard vessels.

Your daily program has the final word. Every distance and fare below was published for Pier 15. We found none for Pier 4, so if that’s your berth, expect different numbers.

Bucket List Guides calls the area outside the terminal a mix of heavy trucks, dust and uneven pavement, with no sidewalks.

So the day starts with a ride. Intramuros packs Fort Santiago, San Agustin Church and Casa Manila into one compact district, and the ride is short.

CruiseMapper says a new terminal is planned at Aseana Avenue in Entertainment City. It’s a plan, not an operating pier.

From the ship to the walled city

Berth
Pier 15, Manila South Harbor — or Pier 4

Bucket List Guides and Gangwaze put large ships at South Harbor. CruiseMapper lists Pier 4 in North Harbor as the cruise terminal. Confirm which one your ship uses.

Distance
About 0.9 mile (1.5 km) to Intramuros

That’s from Pier 15. The same guide gives 1.5 km to the National Museums, 2.5 km to Binondo and 6 km to SM Mall of Asia. No distances for Pier 4 turned up.

On foot
Not recommended

Trucks, dust and no sidewalks outside Pier 15. Ride instead.

Grab
About 150 to 250 PHP to Fort Santiago

A pick-up zone sits just outside the Pier 15 terminal building. For the ride back, name your terminal exactly — “Eva Macapagal Super Terminal” for Pier 15 — so the driver doesn’t stop at a cargo gate. If your ship is at Pier 4, use the name in your daily program.

White taxis
Agree the price first

Taxis at the gate may refuse the meter and name a high price, the guide warns. No official fare is published, so we quote none.

Back aboard
90 minutes before all-aboard

Traffic builds from about 2:30 p.m. For a 5:00 p.m. all-aboard the guide wants the return Grab called by about 3:15. If all-aboard is 4:00, stay in Intramuros.

Fort Santiago San Agustin Church Casa Manila Manila Cathedral Baluarte de San Diego National Museums Rizal Park Binondo Chinatown Bamboo bike tours Taal Volcano and Tagaytay

Inside Intramuros, the Intramuros Administration lists Fort Santiago at 75 PHP and Casa Manila at 75 PHP, with a discounted rate of 50 PHP. Its page lists Fort Santiago from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Casa Manila from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Baluarte de San Diego from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The page carries a 2022 date, so check hours before you go.

The same guide puts the San Agustin Museum at 200 PHP and says it’s closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Casa Manila and the National Museum are closed Mondays, it adds, and Fort Santiago’s dungeons open at 2:00 p.m. Manila Cathedral is free, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., but it’s a working church.

Binondo and the Chinatown food stops are farther out at about 1.6 miles (2.5 km), with bridge traffic that can stretch a 15-to-30-minute Grab. Taal Volcano and Tagaytay are a different scale: 65 km out, 2.5 to 4 hours by Grab, and the guide rates it “extreme” to attempt on your own.

Practical notes

Current as of October 29, 2026 Review periodically

Entry rules, for ordinary U.S. passport holders.

The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs says U.S. citizens may enter without a visa for business or tourism for 30 days or less. It asks for a passport valid at least six months beyond the planned stay, and a return or onward ticket.

Separately, the Bureau of Immigration runs eTravel at etravel.gov.ph. A 2023 DFA embassy advisory says crew and passengers of aircraft and seacraft register there, no more than 72 hours before arrival. It doesn’t describe how cruise ships are handled, so check the site and your line’s own instructions — and keep the two apart.

Money: pesos.

U.S. dollars are generally not accepted, per Bucket List Guides, and ATMs sit inside the Pier 15 terminal. Bring a card, plus some pesos for entry fees and the kalesa.

Getting around: Grab first.

A Grab to Fort Santiago runs about 150 to 250 PHP, and a kalesa 500 to 700 PHP for about 30 minutes, the same guide says. Agree the price and the time before you climb in.

Safety: Level 2 nationally, higher in parts of Mindanao.

The State Department’s national advisory for the Philippines is Level 2, exercise increased caution (issued May 8, 2025; checked October 29, 2026). Manila gets no level of its own. The Sulu Archipelago, the Sulu Sea and Marawi City are Level 4, do not travel, and most of Mindanao is Level 3, reconsider travel — none of it on a Manila call. The advisory’s Manila mention is a crime note: travelers robbed shortly after leaving Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Bucket List Guides calls the historic core generally safe for tourists, and warns about “friendly” guides who offer free tours and then ask for a large tip. A polite no is the usual answer.

Season: dry from November to April.

Gangwaze calls November to April the peak, dry season for city tours. Heat is the bigger issue, with feels-like temperatures often above 100°F (38°C). Carry water, and plan a cool stop at Casa Manila or San Agustin.

Sources: Bucket List Guides’ Manila cruise port guide and Gangwaze’s Manila page on the berth, distances, fares and season; CruiseMapper and Cruise Timetables on the terminal and the 2027 calls; the Intramuros Administration (dated 2022) on hours and fees; the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs on visa-free entry and its 2023 eTravel advisory; the U.S. State Department’s Philippines advisory (travel.state.gov, issued May 8, 2025) — all consulted October 29, 2026. etravel.gov.ph could not be read, so confirm the eTravel step with your line. Pier 15 versus Pier 4 is unresolved.

Manila FAQ

Can I walk from the ship to Intramuros?

Intramuros is about 1.5 km from Pier 15, and Bucket List Guides advises against walking it. The route has trucks, dust and no sidewalks.

Take a Grab, about 150 to 250 PHP to Fort Santiago. That’s the Pier 15 picture; check the route if your ship uses Pier 4.

Which pier do ships use in Manila?

It depends on the source. Bucket List Guides and Gangwaze put large ships at South Harbor, Bucket List naming Pier 15. CruiseMapper lists the North Port Passenger Terminal at Pier 4 as the cruise facility and calls Pier 15 temporary.

Your ship’s port information will name the pier.

Does Manila tender?

No source we read describes tendering. Ships dock at a pier, so your daily program is the place to confirm.

Do U.S. citizens need a visa for Manila?

For ordinary U.S. passport holders, the Philippine DFA lists visa-free entry for 30 days or less, with a passport valid at least six months beyond the stay and a return or onward ticket.

eTravel registration at etravel.gov.ph is a separate step, per a 2023 DFA advisory. Check it and your line’s instructions before you sail.

What currency do I need?

Philippine pesos. U.S. dollars are generally not accepted, one guide says, and ATMs sit inside the Pier 15 terminal.

Which cruise lines call at Manila?

CruiseMapper and Cruise Timetables list Silversea, Holland America, Mystic Cruises, P&O, Cunard, Oceania and Regent calls between January and December 2027. The schedules we read show only a few calls, so trust your ship’s itinerary over any calendar.

Is Manila safe for cruise passengers?

The State Department’s national advisory for the Philippines is Level 2, exercise increased caution (issued May 8, 2025; checked October 29, 2026). Manila has no separate level. Keep to the usual city care.

When is the best time for a Manila port day?

Gangwaze calls November to April the dry peak. Heat is the issue year-round, so start early and keep water handy.
