The call
One day, two ways to spend it
Viking calls at Natchez on day 4 of its 8-day Southern Charms and on every lower-river sailing it lists. Its page calls it the oldest city on the Mississippi, with over 200 historic Southern estates, and includes one excursion per port. ACL stops here on day 7 of its 23-day cruise.
The call is a single day, so you choose. Take whichever mansion tour your line includes, or put the park sites first. A good day fits Melrose, the William Johnson House and Forks of the Road — all three are National Park Service sites with published hours.
Viking's text names historic Southern estates without naming houses or mentioning slavery, and ACL's day-by-day names no Natchez house.
At low water in September 2022, Viking's first call landed at Ferry Street Landing, Under-the-Hill, and guests climbed a steep incline to the top. ACL broke ground on a $5 million riverfront dock on the bluffs on 16 September 2026, with no completion date. Which landing your ship uses is for your line to say.
On a one-day call, lunch depends on the included excursion, so ask your line what the day provides before you plan the park sites around it.
From the ship: Plan a vehicle. The landing isn't published, Under-the-Hill sits below the bluff with downtown at the top, and Forks of the Road is a mile east of downtown.
In town
Three park sites and a fort
Melrose Estate
A Greek Revival house completed in 1848 for the lawyer and cotton planter John T. McMurran. The Park Service says it was not a working plantation, that enslaved people lived and worked there, and that the 1860 census records 22 of them; former quarters stand among the outbuildings. Open daily 8:30 am to 5 pm, with guided house tours at 10, 11, 2, 3 and 4, reserved through Recreation.gov at $11 a person. The grounds are free.
Source 1 Source 2William Johnson House
Built in 1841 by William Johnson, a barber born into slavery in 1809 who became a free businessman with three barbershops. The Park Service also notes that he claimed ownership of several enslaved people. The first-floor visitor center and exhibits are open daily 8:30 am to 5 pm; the second floor stays closed.
Source 1 Source 2Forks of the Road
A small Park Service site at Liberty Road and D'Evereux Drive, a mile east of downtown. The Park Service says Natchez had the second busiest slave-trading market in the Deep South between 1832 and 1863, and the exhibits cover the domestic slave trade. Most sit near the sidewalk, and some can be seen from a car.

Quick answers
Natchez on a river cruise: questions
Where does a river ship dock at Natchez?
In 2022 Viking landed at Ferry Street Landing, Under-the-Hill. ACL began building a $5 million riverfront dock in September 2026. The landing for a 2027 sailing isn't published, so ask your line.
What do the itineraries say about slavery in Natchez?
Very little. Viking speaks of historic estates, and ACL names no Natchez house. The National Park Service sites are where the history is documented: Melrose, the William Johnson House and Forks of the Road. Ask your line for the tour content in writing.
Can I tour Melrose from the ship?
Melrose is open daily 8:30 am to 5 pm, with guided house tours at 10, 11, 2, 3 and 4 for $11, reserved through Recreation.gov. Whether your line's included excursion goes there isn't stated, so ask.
Is Natchez a stop or an embarkation city?
A stop today. Natchez's mayor says ACL's new dock will make the city an overnight home port; no completion date has been released.
