Thon Hotel Kirkenes
The harbour hotel, about 900 m from the quay, with breakfast in the rate and the airport bus at the door.
Pre-Cruise Hotels · Kirkenes
Six places to stay before a Kirkenes sailing, scored on what gets you to the quay, not on reviews. Kirkenes is small: the four town hotels are all within about 1.8 km of the quay by our map, so breakfast and the evening decide most of it, and the Snowhotel is the one with a story.
Three taps and we’ll show your three picks.
Change any answer and the picks change with it. They’re built from the same published facts as the ranking below. No hotel pays for a place here. Booking.com links earn us a commission, and they don’t change the order.
Matching weighs your answers against each hotel’s published shuttle, parking, breakfast, pool, kitchen and pet policies.
Five answers, and the page builds the whole thing: the hotel, the ride in, the ride to the ship, what happens to the car, what time to leave, and how you get home. Every figure is one the hotel, the port or the company publishes. Where nobody publishes a number, you’ll see that instead of a guess.
There’s no cruise parking to price here, so the plan assumes you fly in.
Who’s coming and the mood come from Your Match; the plan uses the same answers.
Partner links may earn Seabound Journeys a commission at no extra cost to you. They don't change the plan, which is built only from what each company publishes.
Thon wins: the nearest hotel to the quay, about 900 m in a straight line, with breakfast in the rate and the airport bus 5 m from the door. Scandic is second on its evening, with the only pool in our list, a sauna and a gym, but breakfast depends on the rate. The Snowhotel is third, with dinner and breakfast in the stay, about 8.5 km out.
Narrow the six by what your night needs. Save the ones you like. Tick up to three to compare side by side — the order is ours, the shortlist is yours.
Why six? Those are the places we could check for Kirkenes. Two of them, Barents Frokosthotell and Kirkenes Hotell, have no website of their own that we could find, and Sollia’s details come from Kayak and a tour leader’s round-up, so those three score on distance alone.
Add your sail date and the links open on the night before.

Booked direct, the resort’s transfers run from Thon and Scandic, not the airport. To the shipNo ride to the ship is listed. The Snowhotel 365 stay includes transfers to and from Thon and Scandic at set times, per the resort; from there it’s Hurtigruten’s Barents Buss or a taxi. The quay is about 8.5 km away in a straight line by our map. | |||

Every distance ends at Kaiveien 4, the coastal quay both lines use, and every one is a straight line between our own map pins, not a walking route. Neither line publishes where the quay is, so our pin sits 1.3 km from the centre, matching Cruise Norway’s port-to-centre figure.
Walking times assume an easy pace on streets about a third longer than the straight line. Only the Snowhotel’s pin comes from a published position; Sollia gives its address only after booking, so its distance is rough.
Five things make a Kirkenes night before easy or hard. Here distance and breakfast do most of the work. Points come from the hotel’s own site or its brand’s.
Silence scores zero, not a guess. Booking sites don’t count, and a walking time to “the harbour” isn’t a walking time to a cruise quay.
By band, from Kaiveien 4: within 1 km, 30; in town, to 3 km, 25; the edge of town, to 8 km, 20; out of town 15. The Snowhotel and Sollia are scored out of town; Sollia’s location is published only after booking.
A transfer the hotel runs or arranges, with a published price, 25. A ride only inside a package 20. The hotel’s own ride with no published fare 15. A walk the hotel itself prints at half a mile or less 15. Nobody in Kirkenes scores here. Hurtigruten’s Barents Buss collects at Thon and Scandic, but it’s the line’s shuttle, not the hotels’.
A published rate to leave the car at the hotel while you cruise 20; offered, but unpriced or not guaranteed, 14. Day rates in a public garage don’t count. Nobody in Kirkenes scores here either. Free parking for your stay doesn’t count.
A breakfast the hotel says is included scores 10. Thon says so, and the Snowhotel’s own booking page puts dinner and breakfast in the Snowhotel 365 stay. Scandic serves breakfast but doesn’t say it’s included, and Barents Frokosthotell’s listings disagree.
Pool 3, food or a bar on site 3, a kitchen in the room 3, a sauna or spa 3, a gym 3. Scandic scores 12 of 15: pool, restaurant, sauna and gym. Booking.com, Travelocity and Kayak listings don’t count, so Kirkenes Hotell, Barents Frokosthotell and Sollia score nothing here.
Ties are broken in order: any published parking for your cruise, any stated ride to the ship, free breakfast, then the shorter straight-line distance to Kaiveien 4. Barents Frokosthotell and Kirkenes Hotell tie on 25, and Barents takes fourth by about 350 m. Both pins are our estimates from the street address, so treat the order as close.
What’s left out is deliberate. Room rates move by the day, so they aren’t scored, and review scores neither. Distances are straight lines between our own map pins, not routed walks or drives, and we say so wherever they appear.
No hotel in our six sells parking for a voyage, and we found no car park for passengers at the quay.
At the hotels. Scandic lists free outdoor parking, 15 spaces that can’t be reserved, and the Snowhotel, Kirkenes Hotell and Sollia list free parking too. All of that is for your stay. Nobody says you can leave a car while you sail, so ask before you count on it.
At the airport. P1 at the terminal has 305 spaces, four of them accessible, and a cheaper P2 is 500 m away, per Avinor, which shows no prices on its page. The airport is about 15 km from the port by road. With no published daily rate, there’s no calculator here.
We checked six places and ranked all six. One name you may see listed separately:
| Hotel | Why it isn’t ranked |
|---|---|
| Gamme Cabins by Kirkenes Snowhotel | Same resort as the Snowhotel, and Hurtigruten sells them as a separate programme. We score them together; the Snowhotel page covers both. |
Kirkenes Airport is about 15 km from the port by road, per Cruise Norway, and Havila puts the taxi at 15 to 20 minutes. Hurtigruten’s Barents Buss stops at Thon and Scandic, including an evening run from the airport at 20:40.
Landing on a Saturday? The terminal opens at 09:00 and the midday Barents Buss doesn’t run. The Getting There table shows what every hotel publishes, and the airport page has the timetable and the landing check.
Tours, tickets and things to do are on Booking.com. Book the day before, not sail day.

On our scoring, Thon Hotel Kirkenes: about 900 m from the quay in a straight line, with breakfast in the rate and the airport coach 5 m away, per Thon. Scandic Kirkenes is second and the Snowhotel third.
Kaiveien 4. Hurtigruten lists Kaiv. 4 and Havila lists Kirkenes Terminal, Kaiveien 4, so both lines use the same quay.
From Thon, about 900 m in a straight line, yes if your bags allow. From the town square it’s about 1.3 km; Hurtigruten puts the walk from the quay to the centre at about 20 minutes. Otherwise take the Barents Buss or a taxi.
Thon Hotel Kirkenes, per Thon, and the Snowhotel 365 stay, which includes dinner too, per the resort. Scandic serves breakfast but doesn’t say it’s included.
None of our six sells it, and we found no car park for passengers at the quay. The airport’s P1 has 305 spaces, per Avinor, with no price published.
Scandic Kirkenes, the only one in our list: an indoor pool 8.3 by 5 m, with a sauna.
