Cruises From Kirkenes

Kirkenes is where the coastal route turns around. Hurtigruten and Havila both board at Kaiveien 4, the turnaround takes a morning, and there’s no luggage storage at the quay, so the timing of your arrival matters more than usual.

Five ways into this guide

Go straight to the question you came with. Each card jumps to its answer.

01

In brief

Kirkenes is the northern end of the Norwegian coastal route. Hurtigruten’s Coastal Express and Havila’s coastal voyages both turn around here, so this is where the southbound voyage to Bergen starts and the northbound one ends. Both lines use the same address, Kaiveien 4.

This page is for starting or ending a voyage here. If your ship is only calling, our Kirkenes port-day guide covers the walk into town and our shore excursion picks cover the tours.

The turnaround is short. Havila lists a 09:00 arrival from the south and a 12:30 departure back south, and Hurtigruten runs check-in from 11:00 to 12:15. There’s no luggage storage at the quay, per Hurtigruten, so if you arrive early, or finish a northbound voyage with a late flight, plan where your bags go.

Lines starting voyages here

Deployments change every season, so this roster is dated and sourced, and it lives only here.

Current as of October 12, 2026

Checked against the lines’ own pages on October 12, 2026. Hurtigruten sells The Coastal Express in four versions, and Kirkenes is the turning point of all of them: the 12-day round trip from Bergen, North (Bergen to Kirkenes, 7 days), South (Kirkenes to Bergen, 6 days) and To the Viking Capital (Bergen to Kirkenes to Trondheim, 11 days). Its land-and-sea tour Follow the Northern Lights, Finland to Norway, starts in Helsinki and joins the ship here on days 5 and 6, from fall 2027. Havila Voyages sells a six-day Kirkenes to Bergen voyage southbound, calling first at Vardø, Båtsfjord and Berlevåg. HX, Hurtigruten Expeditions, doesn’t mention Kirkenes in its 2026–27 season announcement, and we found no ocean line starting or ending a cruise here.

Hurtigruten lists its fleet but doesn’t say which ship sails which date; check your own ship and date before you book around it.

Where you can go

From Kirkenes the coastal ships run south for six days to Bergen. The stops below are on that route; Havila lists Vardø, Båtsfjord and Berlevåg as the first calls south. One voyage may reach a port at night, so check your own itinerary for times.

Before or after the ship: Hurtigruten’s Kirkenes excursions include The Norwegian Border, a riverboat to the border from June to October, snowmobiles and huskies from November to May, the Snowhotel, and king crab trips. Our Kirkenes shore excursion guide sorts them out.

The Russian border: Storskog is Norway’s land crossing with Russia. The Barents Observer reported in July 2025 that it stayed open for international travel, and the US State Department rates Russia Level 4, Do Not Travel, as of December 29, 2025. The border excursions stop short of the line. Check the current rules before planning anything near it.

04

Kaiveien 4, and the quays beside it

Both coastal lines give the same address. Hurtigruten lists “Kaiv. 4, 9900 Kirkenes”; Havila calls it Kirkenes Terminal, Kaiveien 4. Cruise Norway’s 2022 port sheet puts the port 1,300 m from the centre and lists no terminal building or restrooms in the pier area, and Hurtigruten puts the walk to the centre at about 20 minutes.

Hurtigruten runs check-in from 11:00 to 12:15, closing 15 to 20 minutes before departure, and shows the safety video to guests boarding here at 12:45. Havila contradicts itself: its port page says check-in and boarding open at 09:00, on board, when the ship docks, but its check-in FAQ says 11:00. Havila asks for a passport, or a Schengen ID card, and a Visa, Mastercard or Amex at check-in, and warns that the ship keeps to the route and can’t wait.

There’s no luggage storage at the quay. “All belongings must be taken with you,” per Hurtigruten.

05

Parking, in short

We found no car park for passengers at the quay. Cruise Norway’s port sheet lists only 30 bus spaces, and neither Hurtigruten nor Havila mentions parking.

The airport has the only published parking: P1 at the terminal has 305 spaces and a cheaper P2 is 500 m away, per Avinor, with no prices on its page. Scandic Kirkenes and the Snowhotel park you free for the night, but neither says you can leave the car while you sail. We’d fly in.

06

Getting here

Kirkenes Airport Høybuktmoen is about 15 km from the port by road, per Cruise Norway. A taxi to the quay takes 15 to 20 minutes and the airport bus about 20 minutes to the centre, per Havila. Avinor lists two airport-bus operators, Barents Buss and Flybussen, and sends you to them for fares.

Havila runs no transfer of its own and points you to the airport buses. The airport terminal opens only 09:00 to 17:00 on Saturdays, per Avinor, and Hurtigruten’s midday transfer doesn’t run that day. Kirkenes Airport to the ship has the rest.

The night before, ranked: we’ve scored six hotels for the night before a Kirkenes sailing, from the harbour to the Snowhotel, on what each one publishes. None runs its own ride to the ship, though Hurtigruten’s Barents Buss collects at Thon and Scandic. Four worth knowing:
