Port Louis

Port Louis is a capital you can walk from the ship. Ships dock at the Christian Decotter Cruise Terminal, and the Caudan Waterfront, the Blue Penny Museum, Aapravasi Ghat and the Central Market sit within a short, flat walk. The island’s big draws are a drive away — the botanical garden at Pamplemousses about 11 km out, Chamarel about 45 km. Traffic, not distance, decides how much of that you can fit in.

Port Louis in brief

Port Louis is a tropical port where the town is the easy part of the day, not the hard one.

Ships tie up at the Christian Decotter Cruise Terminal, a purpose-built building with two access bridges and room for about 4,000 passengers a day. No tender boats are involved.

The walk into town is short and flat — and it runs under the main road, not across it.

Port guides time the stroll from the terminal to the Caudan Waterfront at about 10 to 15 minutes, on paved paths, with a pedestrian underpass beneath the highway.

AIDA puts the terminal about 3 km from the city center. That figure reads like the road distance; the walking route to Caudan is the shorter one, so ask on board which way the gate sends you.

From Caudan, the old town is right there — no second ride to arrange. Aapravasi Ghat, the UNESCO site where indentured laborers landed, is a short walk north, and the Central Market is about five minutes beyond it.

Many lines run a shuttle, though whether it’s free depends on your line.

Water taxis also cross from the terminal to Caudan for a few dollars. They’re a fun way over and a poor plan for the ride back — at low tide the step to the pier gets awkward.

The city is compact. The island isn’t.

Pamplemousses, the SSR Botanic Garden, is about 11 km northeast — roughly 25 minutes in the morning and up to 50 later in the day. Chamarel’s colored earth sits about 45 km south, and heavy traffic can stretch that drive to about 2½ hours each way.

Afternoon traffic back into the capital is the thing to plan around — port guides flag roughly 3 to 5 pm as the worst of it.

Which tours pay for that drive, and which ones you can skip, is the job of our Port Louis shore excursion guide. Read it before you commit to a full day.

On foot from the ship

Docked
Christian Decotter Cruise Terminal

The dedicated cruise terminal, with two access bridges and a taxi and car area out front. Ships come alongside here, so there’s no tender to queue for.

∼10–15 min
Terminal to the Caudan Waterfront

A flat, paved walk, using the pedestrian underpass beneath the main road. Treat the time as a guide, not a promise — it depends where the gate puts you.

Free
Aapravasi Ghat

The UNESCO-listed immigration depot, a short walk north of Caudan. Open 9:00 to 16:00 on weekdays and 9:00 to 12:00 on Saturday, closed Sunday.

∼5 min
Aapravasi Ghat to the Central Market

Spices, fruit and street food in the covered market. It gets crowded, which is where the pickpocket warnings apply.

Steep
La Citadelle (Fort Adelaide)

The 1834 hilltop fort above the city. About a 15 to 20 minute climb from town, or a short taxi hop if the heat is up.

∼10 min
Walk to the Metro Express

Port Louis Victoria station, the northern end of the light-rail line to Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes and Curepipe.

What's nearby, broadly

Le Caudan Waterfront Blue Penny Museum Aapravasi Ghat Central Market Place d’Armes Government House Jardin de la Compagnie La Citadelle (Fort Adelaide) Champ de Mars Chinatown SSR Botanic Garden, Pamplemousses Chamarel

The first nine on that list are walking distance — the old town is about as wide as a long afternoon stroll. Champ de Mars is the racecourse you look down on from the Citadelle; races run roughly May to November, so many cruise calls miss them. Pamplemousses and Chamarel are the two that take a car — and Chamarel takes most of a day, not a morning.

Port Louis sits on Mauritius’s northwest coast, and in the 2026–27 season it turns up often on round trips from South Africa. MSC Armonia’s season out of Durban and Cape Town starts on November 27, 2026, with Port Louis among its stops — if yours begins in the Cape, our Cape Town cruise port guide covers that end. Silversea’s Silver Muse, TUI’s Mein Schiff 6 and AIDAstella are all scheduled in November 2026. Practical notes

Current as of October 23, 2026 Review periodically

Mauritian rupees, with cards for the bigger places.

The currency is the Mauritian rupee (MUR). Cards work at the waterfront, and there are ATMs in the terminal and at Caudan.

Dollars and euros aren’t widely accepted, per NCL’s port notes, and some Caudan shops that do take them give a poor rate. Carry rupees for the market, taxis and small stalls.

Some sights take rupees only. The Chamarel geopark accepts rupee cash or cards and turns away foreign cash.

Taxis don’t run the meter for you — agree the fare first.

Licensed taxis carry a yellow panel on the driver’s door, and they wait in the area in front of the terminal.

There’s no published port fare. One port guide puts a private driver at about US$80 to $100 for the day; treat that as a starting point for the conversation, not a tariff.

The water taxi is cheap, and best one way.

It runs about US$2 to $5 a person between the terminal and Caudan. With no set safety standard and an awkward step at low tide, it’s the wrong choice for anyone with limited mobility.

The Metro Express runs inland, not around the coast.

The light rail runs inland from Port Louis Victoria to Curepipe Central, a commuter line rather than a sightseeing one. Single tickets come from the platform machines, by cash or card — check the fare on the screen.

The US advisory is Level 2 — increased caution.

The State Department’s Mauritius advisory, updated December 8, 2025, cites crime. Most of it is opportunistic theft in crowded markets, at beaches and near ATMs.

The same advisory says tap water isn’t safe to drink, so buy bottled before a hot walk, not halfway through it.

Entry is visa-free for US citizens, with one form to file.

Stays of 60 days or less need no visa, but every foreign national is asked to complete the Mauritius All-in-One Travel Digital Form within 72 hours before arrival. Ask your line whether it files the form for cruise guests or leaves it to you.

Calls cluster in the warm, wet months.

Cyclones usually come between November and April, peaking January to March, and heavy rain can bring flash floods in the hills. That overlaps most of the cruise season — keep an eye on the forecast and the ship’s notices.
