Recife in brief
Recife is the Brazilian northeast’s big river-and-bridge city, and most of what a cruise passenger came for is a short ride from the ship.
Ships call at the Terminal Marítimo de Passageiros in Recife Antigo, the old harbor district. A 2024 news report says the terminal sits beside the Porto Novo area and dates to preparations for the 2014 World Cup.
The berth is in the middle of a change.
The port’s president said in September 2026 that once the channel dredging is finished, ships will be able to dock in front of the terminal itself. The works were about 40% done, with completion expected in February 2027.
Our reading: this season some calls may not berth at the terminal face. We found no berth plan by sailing, so ask your line where you’ll tie up and how you’ll get to the building.
Recife Antigo is the first stop for most visitors. The city keeps a tourist information center at Praça do Arsenal, and an electric cart called the Giro runs the neighborhood with a guide aboard.
The tourism minister put numbers on the season. He said 10 of the 13 ships coming to Brazil in 2026–27 will call at Recife, and that the season starts in November 2026.
Calls are short. A national news report says passengers usually stay a few hours — so the day is a choice, not a checklist.
Which of the sights earns that time is what our Recife shore excursion guide works through. Read it before you book on board.
On foot from the ship
Recife Antigo, the old harbor district. Costa Pacifica docked at the terminal in November 2024, per the local paper. This season’s berth may differ while dredging runs.
Port president Wagner Maciel said ships will then be able to dock in front of the terminal. Dredging was about 40% done on September 3, 2026.
In 2024 a news report placed a tourist information center in the arrivals hall. Whether it’s staffed on your day is unknown, so don’t count on it.
Diario de Pernambuco reported a City Tour bus through Recife and Olinda for R$ 30, boarding at the terminal. Folha PE gave daily hours of 8:30 am to 5 pm. Both are 2024 figures.
The city runs a small electric cart with a tour guide around the Bairro do Recife, per the September 2026 report. No fare was given.
We found no official distance or drive time from the terminal to Olinda, so we don’t print one. Ask the tour desk, or look at the tour’s listed hours.
What's nearby, broadly
The first group is the old harbor district and the city center, the part the local tourism office is set up to host.
Olinda and the two Brennand sites are a drive — budget for a ride. The Brennand institute and workshop are in the Várzea neighborhood, per the institute’s own press notices and a travel blog.
Boa Viagem is a city beach. The State Department says shark attacks occur at some beaches in northeastern Brazil, particularly near Recife, so check the flags before you wade in.
Commonly reached from
Recife sits on Brazil’s northeast coast, a long way up from Rio de Janeiro and a step north of Salvador. A schedule aggregator lists Viking Jupiter, Seven Seas Mariner, Silver Nova, Azamara Journey, Zaandam, Seabourn Venture and Costa Serena among the 2026–27 calls we could read, and Corazul has announced departures from Recife. See where it fits on our South America & Antarctica hub, or open the Recife card on the Cruise Atlas.
Planning your Recife day
This page covers the port. The tour choices — the half-day with the Brennand sites, the full Olinda day, and the harbor district on foot — are in their own guide.
Booking with a third party? Our comparison of Shore Excursions Group and Viator explains when that makes sense, and when the ship’s tour is the safer buy.

Sort the visa before you sail.
The State Department says: “U.S. citizen travelers must obtain a visa before they travel to Brazil.” It adds that travelers without visas are unable to enter Brazil, and that the US embassy and consulates cannot help with Brazilian visa issues.
Your passport must be valid for one month at the time of entry, with at least one blank page available per stamp. Brazil gives both an entry and an exit stamp.
We didn’t read an official fee or application page, so we print neither. Check your cruise line’s own document rules too.
The advisory is Level 2.
The State Department rates Brazil Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, for crime and kidnapping. The US Embassy’s homepage shows the same level.
The advisory lists informal housing developments — favelas and similar — as places not to travel to at any time, including on guided tours. It also says not to walk on beaches after dark, and notes dangerous riptides.
The US Consulate General is in Recife, on Rua Gonçalves Maia, open Monday to Friday, 7 am to 4 pm.
How you get from the gangway to the street is unconfirmed.
No source we read says how passengers get from the gangway to the street, or whether you can walk out on your own. The terminal sits inside a working port, so ask your line, and use the ship’s shuttle or a booked tour if one is offered.
Money and fares: less is published than you’d hope.
The currency is the Brazilian real. Ship tours are priced in US dollars. We didn’t confirm card acceptance, and we found no published taxi fare from the terminal, so we don’t print one.
Agree the fare or check the app before you get in.

We found no official berth plan, taxi fare, visa fee page or terminal-to-Olinda distance, so none appear here.

Recife FAQ
Do US citizens need a visa for a cruise stop in Recife?
Yes. The State Department says US citizens must obtain a visa before they travel to Brazil, and that travelers without visas are unable to enter. Your passport needs one month’s validity at entry and a blank page per stamp.
Sort it well before you sail, and check whether your line wants proof before boarding.
Where do cruise ships dock in Recife?
At the Terminal Marítimo de Passageiros in Recife Antigo. The port president says dredging, due to finish in February 2027, will let ships dock in front of the terminal itself.
We found no berth plan by sailing, so ask your line.
Does Recife tender?
No source we read describes tendering. Costa Pacifica docked at the terminal in November 2024. Confirm for your own sailing.
Can I walk from the ship into Recife?
It depends on your berth. The harbor district, Recife Antigo, is where the terminal sits and where the city staffs its tourist services.
No source we read says whether you may leave the port area on foot, so ask your line before you set off.
How far is Olinda from the cruise port?
No official figure is published that we could find. Shore Excursions Group lists its Olinda tour at about 7 hours. Holland America’s Brennand-only half-day runs about 4.
Is Recife safe for cruise passengers?
In short, Level 2 and a crime warning. The advisory puts favelas off limits, guided tours included, and warns about beaches after dark.
For a port day, that means daylight, busy areas, a booked ride and your own drinks. It’s caution, not a reason to stay aboard.
Which cruise lines call at Recife in 2026–27?
A schedule aggregator lists Viking, Regent, Silversea, Azamara, Holland America, Seabourn, Costa, Hapag-Lloyd and Phoenix Reisen calls, from November 2026 to April 2027. It showed 10 of 19 calls, so the list is partial.
Corazul has announced Recife departures, and the tourism minister expects 10 of the 13 ships coming to Brazil to call here. Check your own line’s itinerary for the date.
Is there a US consulate in Recife?
Yes. The US Consulate General is at Rua Gonçalves Maia 163, Boa Vista, open Monday to Friday, 7 am to 4 pm, per the embassy’s homepage. Phone (55-81) 3416-3050.
