Santos in brief
Santos sits on São Vicente Island, on Brazil’s southeast coast. Brazil has seven embarkation ports this season, and Clia Brasil expects Santos to pass 640,000 berths. This page covers the day the ship is in, not just the day you board.
Everything runs through the Concais terminal, formally the Terminal Marítimo de Passageiros Giusfredo Santini. Brazilian trade press names it as the one terminal for the 2026–27 season, and the operator’s facilities include cafes, shops, ATMs, Wi-Fi and currency exchange.
The city isn’t far. CruiseMapper puts downtown Santos about 1.5 km (about a mile) from the terminal and another port guide says about 2 km, which is a short ride and a long-ish walk either way — and the walk is the part we’d skip.
That same guide advises against strolling the port area itself, so treat the first stretch as a taxi or app ride, not a walk — the walking starts once you reach the historic center.
A light-rail station named Porto sits about half a mile (800 m) from the terminal, per a local guide for cruise passengers. We didn’t read the line’s route, so check where it goes before you count on it.
São Paulo is the other pull, and the road runs about 70 to 80 km (roughly 45 to 50 miles) depending on the source. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours each way — traffic decides it, not the map.
Plan the day around one choice — stay in Santos for an easy afternoon, or go to São Paulo and give most of the call to the road, not the city.
On foot from the ship
Ships tie up at the passenger terminal, and the sources we read describe them docking alongside rather than tendering. CruiseMapper says up to six can be in port at once — a busy day, then.
About 1.5 km (a little under a mile) per CruiseMapper, and about 2 km (1.2 miles) per another guide. Take a taxi or app ride rather than walking the port road.
About 800 m (half a mile) from the terminal, per Juicy Santos, a local site. We haven’t checked the route or fare.
The Museu Pelé sits at Largo Marquês de Monte Alegre, in the Valongo quarter. The city lists it open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 6 pm, and free to enter — from a 2022 city notice, so check first.
At Rua XV de Novembro 95, in the old coffee exchange. The city site lists Tuesday to Saturday 9 am to 6 pm and Sunday 10 am to 6 pm, with R$ 16 admission (January 2026).
About 70 km (45 miles) by road, per CruiseMapper; other sources say 72 to 80 km. Allow roughly 1.5 to 2 hours each way.
What's nearby, broadly
Valongo, Museu Pelé, the coffee museum and the old tram line sit in the Centro Histórico, a short ride from the terminal. That is the compact option.
The seafront side is a different trip. The Aquário Municipal is at Ponta da Praia, with the beach garden and Praia do Gonzaga along the same shoreline — we found no published distance from the terminal, so ask your driver.
Guarujá is across the water, and São Paulo is up the mountain. Treat both as outings, not strolls.
Commonly reached from
Santos sits on the southeast coast, south of Rio de Janeiro and a long way south of Salvador. MSC and Costa homeport here, and Corazul’s Buenavista joins them in 2026–27. Cunard, Azamara, Holland America and Oceania ships are listed for transit calls in February and March 2027. Planning your Santos day
This page covers the terminal, the transfers and the paperwork. The decision about São Paulo, the old tram and the seafront has its own guide.
Thinking about a third-party tour? Our comparison of Shore Excursions Group and Viator explains when that makes sense, and when the ship’s own tour is the safer buy.
Best Santos shore excursions

Get the visa before you leave home. The gangway is too late.
This is for ordinary US passport holders. The State Department’s Brazil page says US citizens must obtain a visa before traveling to Brazil and that travelers without one are unable to enter, and it adds that the US embassy and consulates cannot help with Brazilian visa issues.
The same page asks for a passport valid at least one month at entry, with a blank page for each stamp, since Brazil stamps you in and out. It says no vaccinations are required.
Apply through Brazil’s own government channels and start early — that’s our advice, not a line from the State Department page.
The advisory is Level 2 for the whole country.
The State Department rates Brazil Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, for crime and kidnapping (issued May 25, 2026) — a national rating from travel.state.gov, not one for Santos.
The page says violent crime happens in urban areas day and night and that drugging and robbery are common, especially in Rio de Janeiro. It also puts informal housing developments at Level 4, Do not travel, at any time, even on guided tours.
For a port day, that means daylight, busy streets and a ride you arranged — and no favela tours.
Bring a card and a little cash.
The currency is the Brazilian real, and CruiseMapper lists ATMs and currency exchange kiosks at the terminal. No taxi fare from the terminal to downtown is published, so we don’t print one — agree the fare first, or use an app.
Turnaround days get crowded.
Portal World Cruises says three ships are due on January 17, 2027, with about 30,000 people at the terminal at once. Expect queues, and book a flight with room to spare, not one with an hour to catch.
Getting to and from the airports.
A local site, Juicy Santos, listed a Cometa bus from Guarulhos from R$ 57, rides by app at R$ 280 to R$ 300 from Guarulhos, and tabled airport taxis at R$ 350 to R$ 450 (November 2025 figures). Another site says check-in closes two hours before departure — so build in a buffer.
The terminal is slated to move, with no date set.
In November 2024 Brazil’s transport minister confirmed plans to relocate the terminal to Parque Valongo, in the historic center, with no date set. Sources for 2026–27 still name Concais — recheck before you go.
Mondays are thin.
The aquarium, Museu Pelé and Museu do Café all list Tuesday-to-Sunday hours or shorter, so if your call lands on a Monday, plan around the seafront and lunch — the tram’s hours outside school holidays aren’t clear.
Sources: the US State Department’s Brazil advisory (travel.state.gov, issued May 25, 2026); Portogente and Portal World Cruises on the 2026–27 season; CruiseMapper, What’s In Port, iSouthAmerica, Melhores Destinos and Juicy Santos on the terminal, distances and transfers; Turismo Santos and the Prefeitura de Santos on the aquarium, Museu do Café, Museu Pelé and the tram — all consulted October 29, 2026. Source dates differ: the Museu Pelé notice is from 2022 and the tram fare is from June 2025. No official taxi fare was published, and we did not read the Brazilian visa application page.

Santos FAQ
Do US citizens need a visa for a cruise stop in Santos?
Yes, per the State Department’s Brazil page: US citizens must have a visa before they travel to Brazil, and travelers without one are unable to enter. Its text is general and doesn’t single out cruise passengers.
This is for ordinary US passport holders. Start the application early.
Can I walk from the cruise terminal to downtown Santos?
It’s possible, but not what we’d choose. CruiseMapper puts downtown about 1.5 km (about a mile) away and another guide says about 2 km, and that guide also advises against walking the port area.
A taxi or app ride to the historic center is easier, and then you can walk.
How far is São Paulo from the Santos cruise port?
About 70 km (45 miles) by CruiseMapper’s count, with other sources saying 72 to 80 km. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours each way; a Viator listing says about 1 hour 30 depending on traffic.
Does Santos use tenders?
No. Port guides describe ships docking alongside at the Concais terminal. On a transit call, ask the ship which berth you’ve been given.
Which cruise ships call at Santos in 2026–27?
MSC Musica, MSC Divina, MSC Seaview and MSC Virtuosa, Costa Diadema and Corazul’s Buenavista are scheduled to sail from Santos. Cunard’s Queen Anne (February 9), Azamara Journey (February 12), Holland America’s Zaandam (February 18) and Oceania’s Insignia (March 14) are listed as transit calls.
Brazilian trade press expects 163 calls through April 4, 2027, and notes the schedule can change.
Is Santos safe for cruise passengers?
The State Department rates the whole country Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, because of crime and kidnapping — a national rating, not one for Santos.
Its Brazil page puts informal housing developments at Level 4, Do not travel, at any time, even on guided tours. Stick to the center, the seafront and the ship’s own tours or a driver you booked.
How do I get from São Paulo airport to the ship?
Juicy Santos lists a Cometa bus from Guarulhos that runs about 2 hours, and app rides of 1 hour 20 minutes to 2 hours. Its prices are November 2025 figures.
Melhores Destinos puts the check-in cutoff two hours before sailing. Leave room for the mountain traffic.
What is open in Santos on a Monday?
The aquarium, Museu Pelé and Museu do Café list no Monday hours, so Monday looks thin. The tram’s hours aren’t clear outside school holidays.
Check each venue’s page the week you sail.
