In the city, the car is the expense
The ship is 16 miles from SFO and 20 from Oakland, and neither ride needs a car. Inside the city the car is the expense — valet costs $55 to $107 a night, the pier has no parking, and the police say to take your phone, luggage and passport with you when you park.
On SFMTA’s rates a taxi from SFO to the pier lands at about $50 to $65 (our arithmetic), while BART needs about half an hour to reach downtown.
A rental for the same 16 miles costs more than the taxi, and it still has to be returned.
Then there’s where the car sleeps. Valet is a nightly charge, not a one-time fee — and the hotels we checked were valet only or valet first.
The Port lists no overnight parking at the cruise terminals either.
San Francisco’s police say to keep phones, sunglasses, luggage and passports out of a parked car, and to clear the trunk — an awkward rule to keep before a sailing, with everything you own packed in it.
Then the bridges. The Golden Gate charges southbound only, into the city — and it’s all electronic, so most companies bill a program fee on top.
Which side of the bridge is your trip on?
One row each for the trip home, the plans, the flight and the group. Nothing you tap is stored.
Muir Woods wants a reservation, wine country wants a driver
Muir Woods is 16 miles and about 36 minutes across the Golden Gate with no traffic. GoMuirWoods requires drivers to reserve parking — $10 for a standard vehicle.
Its FAQ says you’re turned away without a reservation and can’t buy parking there — and the entrance is a separate $15 for anyone 16 or older.
There’s no cell service in the park, so download the reservation first.
The shuttle from the Larkspur ferry terminal is a car-free way in — though it’s a booking, not a walk-on. It’s $19 a person with the entrance, and we couldn’t price the ferry to Larkspur.
Napa is 47 miles from the pier, about 66 minutes with no traffic, and the car is the easy way there. Plan a designated driver.
The car-free ways are a tour, or a ferry to Vallejo and a bus, and we couldn’t price either one.
After the ship, Highway 1, Monterey and Yosemite are the drives worth keeping a rental for — the coast is an hour or two out, and Yosemite a good deal farther.
The dollars behind each plan
| Plan | By rental car | Without one |
|---|---|---|
| SFO to the pier for two | $88 for a one-day rental | A metered taxi at about $50 to $65, or BART. The taxi wins. |
| A Muir Woods day for two | $115 with the parking reservation, entrance and a Golden Gate toll program | $19 a person for the shuttle and entrance, plus the ferry to Larkspur, which we couldn’t price. The car wins, or the shuttle if it runs. |
| A Napa day for two | $89 for the car and a toll, no tastings | A tour, or the Vallejo ferry and a bus; we couldn’t price either. The car wins, with a designated driver. |
| Two nights in the city first | $287 from SFO, with $70-a-night valet | Two 1-day Muni passports at $30 a person, cable cars included. No car. |
We assume a base rate of $50 a day. SFO adds a placeholder $26 charge per contract and an 11% fee, also assumed, and California adds its 3.5% assessment, with fuel at $6.56 a gallon. For the day trips we count Enterprise’s toll program, $4.95, plus the $11.25 invoiced rate southbound. Sales tax is left out, and none of this is a quote. Illustrative
Only Muir Woods and Napa put the car ahead — and even the Muir Woods day is about $58 a person once the toll, the parking reservation and the entrance are in.
Each has a catch no price can remove: a reservation for one, a designated driver for the other.
Sorting the rest of your list
Everything else on a typical list sorts into two piles, depending on whether the car helps.
The car earns its day
- Muir Woods: the $10 parking reservation is required, and GoMuirWoods’ FAQ says a car without one is turned away. Muir Woods, in full.
- Napa or Sonoma: Napa runs 47 miles, about an hour and six minutes in free-flowing traffic. Plan a designated driver, or take a tour. Wine country.
- Highway 1, Monterey or Yosemite: the Golden Gate and the Bay Bridge charge into the city, not out of it. Renting after the cruise.
The car only costs you
- Landing on sail day: a taxi at about $50 to $65, or BART. The airport to the ship.
- Alcatraz and the Wharf: Pier 33 is on the Embarcadero, and the F line runs past. The night before.
- Cable cars and Chinatown: $9 a ride, prepaid at the boarding points. Downtown without a car.
- Your own car: there’s nothing at the pier to park in, per the Port. San Francisco cruise parking.
If the kids are coming
Size the car first, because the class decides what fits.
| Enterprise class | What fits |
|---|---|
| Midsize car | 5 people, 3 bags |
| Standard SUV | 5 people, 5 bags |
| Full-size SUV | 7 people, 3 bags |
| 7-passenger minivan | 7 people, 5 bags |
Enterprise’s own numbers; what you actually get depends on the class you’re booked into. Checked Sept 27, 2026
Then the child-seat law: rear-facing under 2, with an exception at 40 pounds or 40 inches, and from there to age 8 a booster or car seat in the back, with an exception at 4 feet 9 inches (Vehicle Code 27360 and 27363).
A car seat flies free as checked luggage on American, Delta, Southwest and JetBlue, by each airline’s own word — so it’s easier to pack your own than to rent one at the counter.

If a single day trip is the only reason for the car, price one rental day, not a week, and ride everything else.
Before you rent in San Francisco
Should I rent a car for a San Francisco cruise?
For the ship itself, no. SFO is 16 miles away, a cab runs about $50 to $65, and BART is half an hour to downtown. A car pays for itself on Muir Woods, Napa, Sonoma or a road trip once the ship is behind you.
Taxi or rental from SFO to the pier: what costs less?
The taxi. On SFMTA’s rates it comes to about $50 to $65 (our arithmetic), while a rental for the day, covering the same 16 miles, runs about $88 on our assumed $50 base rate before you’ve returned it.
Can I just turn up at Muir Woods in a rental car?
Not safely. GoMuirWoods requires drivers to reserve parking, $10 for a standard vehicle, and its FAQ says a car without one is turned away, and parking can’t be bought on arrival. The entrance is a separate $15 for anyone 16 or older, and the shuttle from Larkspur needs a reservation too.
Will I need a car in the city the night before?
Usually not. The F line, cable cars and ferries reach the Wharf, Alcatraz and the Ferry Building, and from the Embarcadero station Pier 27 is roughly 20 minutes on foot. Valet at the hotels we priced is $55 to $107 a night, and the police want valuables out of a parked car.
