Tauranga in brief
Tauranga is the name on your itinerary, but Mount Maunganui is where you actually step off — the beach town, not the city.
The berth is about 1 km from the Mount Maunganui township and 7 km from Tauranga city, which sits across the harbor. It’s part of the working cargo port — a wharf, not a terminal hall.
Celebrity names the cruise berth as Salisbury Wharf, so that’s the name to give a driver picking you up.
The beach town is the walk-off; the famous day trips are an hour or more inland.
Turn right out of the port for Main Beach and the ocean side, or left for the calmer harbor water at Pilot Bay. You can rent surf and snorkel gear at Pilot Bay, and dolphins are sometimes seen there.
Rotorua is about an hour’s drive and 86 km away, though Holland America budgets 90 minutes for the run to Te Puia. Geysers, mud pools and Māori cultural performances are what you’re driving for.
Mauao is closed — and that changes the classic Tauranga day.
A weather event on January 21, 2026 brought landslides down across the maunga — 42 of them. As of October 23, 2026, Mauao remains closed to protect public safety. Repairs have started on the base track, and the summit route is close to ready, but there’s no reopening date.
The Mount Hot Pools, at the foot of the maunga, are closed until further notice too — a casualty of the same slips, not a separate problem.
The council is aiming for a summer reopening of the summit route and parts of the base track — a target, not a promise. Check the council’s page the week you sail.
Which inland tours earn their fare, and which are a long coach day you could cut in half, is what our Tauranga shore excursion guide works through. Read it before you book Rotorua.
From the wharf into Mount Maunganui
Cruise calls use the cargo port area, at Salisbury Wharf. There’s no permanent terminal building to plan around — Tourism Bay of Plenty runs a temporary i-PORT at the port for the season.
The walk into Mount Maunganui, roughly 1 km from the port. Turn right for Main Beach, left for Pilot Bay.
Closed since the January 2026 landslides. The council lists repair work under way and no opening date as of late October 2026.
Closed until further notice, a casualty of the January 21, 2026 weather event.
About a 10-minute drive by bus or taxi. Shuttles into downtown aren’t free.
About an hour by road. Te Puia sits about 2.5 km from central Rotorua.
What's nearby, broadly
The first five are on foot, and two of those are shut this season. Tauranga city and the Elms Mission House are a short ride across the harbor.
McLaren Falls and the Kaimai forest need a car or a tour. Rotorua and Hobbiton are full days out — Hobbiton’s own tour starts at The Shire’s Rest near Matamata, so the coach ride sits on top of the 2.5 hours on the set. Price the whole day before you choose between them.

Tauranga sits on New Zealand’s North Island itineraries — if yours starts in Auckland, that guide covers the embarkation end, and Auckland has its own port-of-call guide too. About 79 ship visits are expected between October 2026 and April 2027, subject to change. October 2026 brings Celebrity, Carnival and Royal Caribbean, and January 2027 adds Regent, Holland America, Azamara, Oceania, Norwegian and Princess. The excursion guide covers what to book, while this page stays with the wharf, the town and the paperwork.
Thinking of booking Rotorua or Hobbiton with a third party? Our comparison of Shore Excursions Group and Viator covers how each one handles a long inland day — and why the ship’s tour still makes sense when the drive eats most of your time ashore.

You need an NZeTA and the visitor levy before you sail.
You need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority or a visa, applied for before departure. Your passport needs at least three months’ validity beyond your departure date.
The International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy is NZD 100 per eligible person from October 1, 2024, and you pay it each time you request an NZeTA.
The NZeTA itself is NZD 17 through the official app, or NZD 23 on the Immigration NZ website — those are October 2024 fees, so check the current figure when you apply.
Prices here are in New Zealand dollars — mostly.
Immigration NZ and Hobbiton both quote in NZD. Some cruise lines don’t — Norwegian’s Australian site prices its Rotorua tour in Australian dollars, so compare like with like.
Taxis and buses — settle the fare first.
Tauranga Mount Taxis is on (07) 578 6086, and Uber works here. Agree a price with the driver, or check the app, before you get in.
Bay Hopper buses run from Mount Maunganui across Tauranga. It’s $3.80 one way and NZ$8.60 for a day pass — confirm on baybus.co.nz, since fares change.
Many lines run a shuttle to the Bay of Plenty i-SITE in central Mount Maunganui. Ask whether yours is free — the downtown shuttles generally aren’t.
The US advisory is Level 1.
New Zealand sits at Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, in the advisory issued April 29, 2026, and the State Department calls it generally a safe destination.
The season runs from about October to April.
That’s the window all 79 expected calls fall into. Te Puia opens daily from 9am to 5pm for its day experiences, which suits a normal port day — but a late arrival leaves less time in Rotorua than you’d think.
