A battlefield on the bluff

The call
What a ship day gets you
Vicksburg follows Natchez on Viking's northbound and round-trip sailings, on day 5 of both Southern Charms and the Odyssey. On ACL's 23-day cruise it's day 8.
Viking's included visit is Vicksburg National Military Park, which its page describes as marking a pivotal Civil War battle. Its optional list adds a tour called Vicksburg's Historic Neighborhoods.
The park alone can take most of a day. Its own planning guide gives 5 to 8 hours for the battlefield road and about an hour each for the visitor center and the USS Cairo museum.
Call length isn't published. Ask your line how long you'll have, where the ship lands and how far the park is; then pick the tour road and the Cairo, and let the rest go.
Lunch depends on the included excursion. Ask your line whether the park tour covers it, because the battlefield road leaves little time to find a meal.
From the ship: Plan on a coach or a car. The battlefield is a driving tour, and the landing isn't published.

When
Park hours run year-round, with the visitor center, USS Cairo Museum and tour road closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Viking's lower-river season runs late January to early June and October to early December. The river matters here: the October 2022 closure that stopped Viking Mississippi ran between Tunica and Vicksburg.

Quick answers
Vicksburg on a river cruise: questions
How long do I need for Vicksburg National Military Park?
The park's planning guide says 5 to 8 hours for the battlefield, an hour for the visitor center and an hour for USS Cairo. Call length isn't published, so ask your line how long you'll have.
What are the park hours?
The tour road runs 8:30 am to 5 pm, with the last vehicle in at 4:40. USS Cairo is open 8:30 am to 4:30 pm daily, and the visitor center Wednesday to Sunday, 8:30 to 4:30. Those are the Park Service's hours from October 2024, so confirm them.
Where does the ship dock?
The line doesn't publish the Vicksburg landing. Ask your line for the berth and the distance to the park.
Why does this stretch of river matter for low water?
In October 2022 a closure between Tunica and Vicksburg stopped Viking Mississippi. Viking bused its guests on to Memphis; ACL said its shallow-draft boats stayed on schedule. Ask what your line does if the river closes on your dates.
