Colombo excursions, from a tuk-tuk to the south coast
Ranked by one question: what does the tour buy you that a driver and a fare agreed in advance don’t?
In the city, a bit of time and a fixed price. On the road to Galle, a lot more.
Berth, entry paperwork and money detail is on our Colombo cruise port guide. We found no cruise-line excursion listing for Colombo, so ask your excursion desk what your ship sells.
This is the plain version of a Colombo day, and it’s the one to price first.
Colombo Now lists a city tour at about 4 to 5 hours, from $50.00 a person — with port pickup and drop-off included. Its stops run from a lighthouse and the Fort area to Gangaramaya Temple, Beira Lake, Independence Square and the National Museum.
Then comes the shopping. The listing puts about an hour at a gem museum and 20 minutes at Laksala, a souvenir and handicraft stop.
Admission to the National Museum and Gangaramaya isn’t in the fare — and neither are food and drinks.
- Time commitment
- About 4 to 5 hours, per the operator’s listing.
- Getting there
- The operator collects you at the dock. The listing names no meeting point, so confirm it.
- Suits
- First-timers, short calls, minimal-stress days.
- Ship or independent
- Independent, if the operator confirms your ship’s berth and all-aboard in writing.
Why it's worth considering
One booking covers the temple, the museum and the Fort district, with the ride back built in.
It starts at a price you can compare — which the other listing we read doesn’t offer.
The catch
Count the gem museum and the souvenir stop. Together they take roughly an hour and 20 minutes of a 4-to-5-hour day.
Some reviewers reported communication problems at the port, per the listing page. Get a local contact number.
Verify before you book
- The exact pickup point for your berth
- What the fare leaves out, including tickets
- Your all-aboard time against the tour’s stated length
For a longer, more private take on the same city.
Marriott Bonvoy Activities lists a private small-group Colombo tour at 4 to 6 hours, with pick-up and drop-off at the cruise dock. Stops include Gangaramaya (45 minutes), Independence Square (30), the Lotus Tower (about an hour), Galle Face Green (40) and Pettah (an hour).
The booking page showed $0.00 until dates were picked — so we have no fare to quote.
That makes it a quote request — not a purchase.
- Time commitment
- About 4 to 6 hours, per the listing.
- Getting there
- Pickup and drop-off at the cruise dock.
- Suits
- Couples, small families and anyone who wants the tower and the lake in one day.
- Ship or independent
- Independent, with a written timetable that works backward from all-aboard.
Why it's worth considering
It adds the Lotus Tower and Galle Face Green to the temple-and-Fort core.
A private vehicle lets a group shorten or skip a stop, which a coach may not allow.
The catch
Six hours is a lot of a short call. Ask the operator for the stop order and run the clock yourself.
No price is published on the page we read, so compare it with the city tour above before you commit.
Verify before you book
- The fare for your group size, in writing
- Whether the tower ticket is included
- The pickup point and a phone number
DIY · taxi or tuk-tuk
Gangaramaya Temple and Beira Lake on your own
The temple appears on both Colombo itineraries we read.
Operator itineraries give it 30 minutes (Colombo Now) to 45 (Marriott Activities), and Colombo Now adds Beira Lake nearby. That’s a useful sizing for a short call.
One aggregator says daily from 5:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and another listing on the same site says 6:00 a.m. We couldn’t read the temple’s own site, and we found no entrance fee.
So the DIY version is a ride plus whatever the gate charges. Take a taxi or tuk-tuk from the berth, agree the fare before you leave, and tell the driver to wait or return at a set time.
- Time commitment
- Our estimate: about an hour on site, plus the ride each way.
- Getting there
- Taxi or tuk-tuk. No fare is published, so agree it first.
- Suits
- Budget days, repeat visitors, anyone who prefers a temple to a museum.
- Ship or independent
- Independent. A temple visit doesn’t need a guide, though one adds the history.
Why it's worth considering
The cost is the ride and whatever the temple charges, which we couldn’t confirm.
It sits on the same loop as the museum and Independence Square, so a driver can chain them.
The catch
Dress for a place of worship. We didn’t find the temple’s own dress rule, so ask your line.
Fares aren’t published, which gives drivers room to start high.
Verify before you book
- Opening hours on the temple’s own site
- Any entrance fee
- A fare and a return time agreed with the driver

The National Museum and Independence Square
If you want Sri Lanka’s history under a roof, check the day of the week first.
The tourism board’s page has the Colombo National Museum at 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, shut on public holidays. Two smaller ones, Independence Memorial and Maritime, close an hour earlier and take Sundays and Mondays off as well.
The page lists no ticket prices for foreign visitors. The Colombo Now listing says admission to the National Museum isn’t included in its fare — which suggests there is one to pay.
Independence Square appears as a stop on both operator itineraries, with Marriott Activities giving it about 30 minutes.
- Time commitment
- Colombo Now allots about an hour to the National Museum; our estimate for the square is 30 minutes.
- Getting there
- Taxi or tuk-tuk, or as part of a tour.
- Suits
- Repeat visitors, history fans, rainy-day plans.
- Ship or independent
- Independent. A tour makes sense if you want the ride arranged.
Why it's worth considering
Indoor time helps if the weather turns.
The Colombo museum opens longer hours than the other two — at least on the tourism page.
The catch
A Sunday or Monday call may find two of the three closed.
A public holiday can close the National Museum too.
Verify before you book
- Your call date against the closed days
- Foreign-visitor ticket prices
- Whether a museum is closed for works
DIY · tuk-tuk or taxi
Fort and Pettah by tuk-tuk
This is the short-call version of Colombo.
CruiseMapper puts Fort and Pettah roughly 3 to 4 km from some berths, 10 to 20 minutes by vehicle in moving traffic, and lists taxis, tuk-tuks and private drivers as the practical options.
The itineraries we read use Fort for the Old Parliament view, the clock tower and the Jamiul Alfar Mosque, with an hour set aside for Pettah in one of them.
We have no market hours and nothing to say about what to buy. Treat it as a wander with a driver on call — not a scheduled visit.
- Time commitment
- Our estimate: two to three hours, ride included.
- Getting there
- Taxi or tuk-tuk from the berth, or your line’s shuttle if it runs one.
- Suits
- Short calls, budget days, travelers who like to browse.
- Ship or independent
- Independent, with a fare and return time agreed up front.
Why it's worth considering
At 3 to 4 km from some berths, it’s a short ride by the distances we read.
A short ride keeps the day flexible — useful if your call starts early.
The catch
Traffic decides how long the trip back takes. Leave 60 to 90 minutes in hand — our estimate.
No fare is published, and no tuk-tuk meter rule turned up in our sources.
Verify before you book
- The fare and the currency before you board
- Where your driver will wait
- Your line’s drop-off point
DIY · seafront and tower
Galle Face Green and the Lotus Tower
A seafront green and a tall tower make a decent end to a city loop.
Marriott Activities allots about 40 minutes to Galle Face Green and about an hour to the Lotus Tower. The tower’s own site promotes 360-degree views of Colombo, plus dining and entertainment.
We couldn’t find an opening time or a foreigner ticket price on any page we could read, so there’s no number to put here.
Skip the tower if the sky is hazy or your call is short. The green costs nothing to stand on — as far as we know.
- Time commitment
- About 1 hour 40 minutes for both, going by one operator’s timings.
- Getting there
- Taxi, tuk-tuk, or as the last stops on a private tour.
- Suits
- Couples, repeat visitors, families with older kids.
- Ship or independent
- Either. Independent is cheaper, and a tour hands you the ride.
Why it's worth considering
It gives you a skyline view the temples and museums don’t.
The green sits in the Fort-side loop, so it adds little drive time to a city day.
The catch
We have no ticket price or opening hours — so budget for a surprise.
It’s one more stop in a day that already runs four to six hours.
Verify before you book
- Tower hours and the foreigner ticket price on its own site
- Whether the observation deck is open on your date
- Visibility on the day
Galle is a day trip, and a Colombo port day is rarely one.
A Sri Lankan guide puts the distance at about 120 km, and the Southern Expressway at about an hour from Kottawa. It doesn’t time the leg from the city to Kottawa, and the toll for light vehicles is Rs. 400.
Our estimate for the whole trip is about two hours each way — which matches our map card.
Silversea’s Silver Muse is listed from 7 a.m. December 7 to 5 p.m. December 8. Oceania’s Nautica 2027 sailings call at Galle and Colombo, so on those routings Galle may have its own stop.
- Time commitment
- Our estimate: a full day, with about four hours on the road.
- Getting there
- A private driver on the expressway. We found no ship-line listing for Galle.
- Suits
- Overnight calls, repeat visitors, travelers who’d trade Colombo for the coast.
- Ship or independent
- Either. Ask your line first, because a ship tour carries its own timing risk.
Why it's worth considering
An overnight call gives you time to go and come back.
Of the seven plans here, it’s the one that leaves the capital — and it needs the most time.
The catch
On a 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. call, four hours of driving leaves little at the other end.
Galle National Museum is listed 9:00 to 5:00 and closed Sundays and Mondays.
Verify before you book
- Your arrival and all-aboard times
- Whether your line calls at Galle itself
- A driver’s fare for the round trip

Colombo with the ship or on your own
In the city, a pickup tour or a driver
Both operator listings we read include pickup and drop-off at the dock. That solves the harbor, which you can’t walk out of.
A fixed price helps — no taxi or tuk-tuk fare is published.
For the long run to Galle, plan with your line
A day trip to Galle is about 120 km each way, and a ship tour, if your line sells one, carries the timing risk for you. We found no such listing.
A private driver gives you control — and puts the timing risk on you.
Third-party listings have gaps
The Colombo Now listing prices at $50.00 a person, and the Marriott Activities page showed $0.00 until dates were chosen.
Neither names a meeting point at the port, so get one in writing, with a phone number. For the booking styles side by side, see Shore Excursions Group vs. Viator.
How each option compares in Colombo
| Excursion | Lean ship excursion when… | Independent works when… |
| City highlights loop | You want the pickup arranged | Yes — a port-pickup listing from $50 a person, admissions extra |
| Gangaramaya and Beira Lake | Usually not worth a separate ship tour | Yes — a taxi or tuk-tuk, fare agreed first |
| National Museum | It is bundled into a larger loop | Yes, on a day it is open |
| Fort and Pettah | Not needed | Yes — the berth is about 3 to 4 km away |
| Lotus Tower and Galle Face Green | On a private tour that includes them | With a driver, once you have the tower’s hours |
| Galle | If your line sells one and the call is long | A private driver, on a long or overnight call |
Short answer
Book a port-pickup city tour, or hire a driver, and spend the day on Gangaramaya, the museum and Fort. Add the Lotus Tower if you have the hours. Leave Galle for an overnight call, and start the ETA before you leave home.

Colombo port logistics: the harbor, the ride and the paperwork
From the ship into town
Ships dock at Queen Elizabeth Quay or another assigned berth, per CruiseMapper, and the harbor is a secure industrial area.
Full berth detail is on our Colombo cruise port guide.
- Fort and Pettah: about 3 to 4 km from some berths, 10 to 20 minutes by road
- Shuttle: ask whether your line runs one
- Taxi or tuk-tuk: no published fare, so agree it first
Money
Bring Sri Lankan rupees. CruiseMapper suggests small notes for tuk-tuks, markets and minor purchases.
The third-party listings we read quote dollars, so ask what an add-on ticket costs in rupees on the day.
Safety and paperwork
The US Embassy’s homepage lists Sri Lanka at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution. Read the full State Department text before you book a long drive.
The ETA is covered on our port guide, and the official site is eta.gov.lk.
