Colombo in brief
Colombo is Sri Lanka’s capital and main port, and cruise ships share a working commercial harbor.
CruiseMapper says ships commonly use Queen Elizabeth Quay or another assigned berth, and that berths can change with ship size and port operations. It describes no dedicated cruise terminal building.
Sri Lanka’s ports authority floated converting Bandaranaike Quay into a full cruise terminal in a July 2015 article. We found nothing newer saying it happened, so we don’t describe a terminal.
The call is occasional, not routine.
Our map card lists AIDA, Oceania, Regent Seven Seas, Silversea and TUI Cruises as occasional callers, and the schedules we read fit that. Oceania’s Sirena was the one October 2026 call; December brings three more.
So expect a world-cruise or Indian Ocean routing, not a regular stop. The calls we found start around 7 a.m. and run into the evening, except one overnight.
The city day is temples, a museum and the Fort district.
A typical operator itinerary strings together Gangaramaya Temple, the National Museum, Independence Square and Galle Face Green, with the Lotus Tower on some versions. Those fit in about four to six hours, per two operator listings.
Galle, on the south coast, is a different proposition. It sits about 120 km away, and it suits a long or overnight call.
Which stops are worth the fare, and where a driver beats a coach, is what our Colombo shore excursion guide sorts out. Read it before you book a lunch stop at a gem shop.
From the berth into Colombo
CruiseMapper’s description. Ships dock rather than tender, and the berth can change with ship size and port operations, so check your daily program.
The harbor is a secure industrial area, per CruiseMapper. Follow your line’s instructions for the passenger exit or the drop-off point.
CruiseMapper puts them about 2 to 2.5 miles (3 to 4 km) from some berths. Allow more when traffic is heavy.
No official port shuttle is described. Ask your excursion desk whether the ship runs one, and where it drops you.
Both are listed as useful, and we found no published fare. Agree the price, the currency and the return point before you get in.
CruiseMapper suggests carrying Sri Lankan rupees in small denominations. We found no card-acceptance data for the city.
What's nearby, broadly
Fort and Pettah sit about 3 to 4 km from some berths, by CruiseMapper’s distance. The operator itineraries we read run through Fort for the Old Parliament view and the Jamiul Alfar Mosque.
Gangaramaya Temple, Beira Lake, Independence Square, the National Museum and Galle Face Green fill out a city day. The Colombo Lotus Tower is a stop on one private tour we found; its own site promotes 360-degree views.
Galle is about 120 km south, and a Sri Lankan guide puts the Southern Expressway leg at about an hour from Kottawa. Add the trip out to Kottawa and you see why it needs a long call.
Commonly reached from
Colombo turns up on Indian Ocean and Asia routings, often as one stop in a longer voyage. An agent listing shows Oceania’s Nautica sailings from April 24, 2027 calling at Galle and Colombo, and Silversea’s 2027 world cruise includes Colombo. Regent’s Seven Seas Voyager is listed there on February 26, 2027. See our Oceania Cruises guide, Regent Seven Seas guide and Silversea guide, or see how the region fits together on our Southern Africa and Indian Ocean cruise guide.

Apply for the ETA before you sail.
Sri Lanka requires foreign nationals to hold an Electronic Travel Authorization before arrival. The official ETA site lists the United States among 40 countries whose tourist ETA is processed free of charge from May 25, 2026.
It’s valid for 30 days, with double entry within that window. Staying longer means applying for an extension and paying the fee.
Cruise lines handle some paperwork differently, so ask yours whether it expects you to apply yourself. We haven’t confirmed how each line treats the ETA for a one-day call.
The US advisory is Level 2.
The US Embassy in Sri Lanka’s homepage shows Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, and carries no issue date. The travel.state.gov page wouldn’t load for us, so read the full text and its reasons before you go.
Carry small rupee notes.
The currency is the Sri Lankan rupee. CruiseMapper recommends small notes for tuk-tuks, markets and minor purchases.
No taxi or tuk-tuk fare is published in the sources we read. Agree it first.
Check the museum calendar.
Sri Lanka Tourism lists the Colombo National Museum as open 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, closed on public holidays. The Independence Memorial Museum and the Maritime Museum are listed 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and closed Sundays, Mondays and public holidays.
Ticket prices for foreign visitors aren’t on that page.
Give the drive back some slack.
Our map card suggests 60 to 90 minutes of buffer for traffic on the way back to the ship. That’s our estimate, not a published figure.

Colombo FAQ
Can I walk from the ship into Colombo?
No. The harbor is a secure industrial area, and CruiseMapper puts Fort and Pettah 3 to 4 km from some berths.
Take the line’s shuttle if it runs one, a taxi, a tuk-tuk or a tour.
Do US citizens need a visa for Sri Lanka?
You need an Electronic Travel Authorization before arrival. Sri Lanka’s official ETA site names the United States among 40 countries with a free tourist ETA, valid 30 days.
Apply online ahead of time, and confirm the current rule on the official site.
Does Colombo tender?
Not according to CruiseMapper, which says ships dock at Queen Elizabeth Quay or another assigned berth.
Is there a cruise terminal at Colombo?
CruiseMapper describes no dedicated cruise terminal building. A 2015 Daily FT article reported a plan to convert Bandaranaike Quay into one, and we found no confirmation that it was built.
Which cruise lines call at Colombo?
Our map card lists AIDA, Oceania, Regent Seven Seas, Silversea and TUI Cruises as occasional callers. The schedules we read name Oceania’s Sirena on October 28, 2026, TUI’s Mein Schiff 6 on December 2, Silver Muse on December 7 and 8, and AIDAstella on December 10.
Regent’s Seven Seas Voyager is listed on February 26, 2027.
What currency do I need in Colombo?
The Sri Lankan rupee. CruiseMapper suggests small notes for tuk-tuks and markets.
Can I visit Galle from a Colombo cruise stop?
Galle is about 120 km away. A Sri Lankan guide puts the Southern Expressway leg at about an hour from Kottawa, with a Rs. 400 toll for light vehicles.
Our estimate for the whole trip is about two hours each way, which is why it suits a long or overnight call.
Is Colombo safe for cruise passengers?
The US Embassy in Sri Lanka’s homepage lists Sri Lanka at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution — we couldn’t read the reasons behind it.
Read the State Department’s full text before you sail, and enroll in STEP.
