Cape Town
Ships berth at E-Berth in Duncan Dock, about five minutes on foot from the Silo District. The region’s hub: almost every voyage on this page starts, ends or overnights here.
Seabound Journeys · Cruise Atlas · Region guide
Two oceans meet off the Cape, and the cruise calendar here runs on the southern summer. Most of what sails this region is a segment of a longer voyage, not a week-long loop — so the first question is which kind of trip you’re buying.
01 · What a cruise here looks like
Almost nobody flies to Cape Town for a seven-night round trip. They fly in to join a voyage that’s already moving.
This region sells three different products under one name. The first is MSC’s South African season: one ship, short sailings from Durban and then Cape Town, priced and scheduled for South African holidaymakers.
The second is the luxury Africa voyage. Regent and Silversea run 15- to 28-night segments that link Cape Town with Mauritius, Madagascar, the Seychelles or Asia.
The third is the world cruise. Holland America and Viking route their 2026–27 world voyages around the Cape, and Cape Town becomes an overnight on a trip that started in Fort Lauderdale.
All three run in the same window — roughly November to April, the southern summer. Outside it, the region goes quiet.
Which one fits depends on how long you have and how far you’re willing to fly, not on the ports. The ports overlap more than the brochures suggest.
MSC Armonia opens the South African season in Durban, then moves to Cape Town in March 2027.
Regent’s Voyager and Navigator and Silversea’s Silver Muse sail Cape Town to Mauritius, Singapore or Mumbai.
Carrying 106,240 passengers, per figures reported in October 2026. The 2026–27 season opened on September 17.

MSC canceled the ship’s Suez repositioning on Aug 24, 2026, citing the Red Sea; the season itself stays onRéunion, two Madagascar calls, Mayotte, three days in Durban, then East London, Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) and Mossel Bay before Cape Town.

Schedules change; this is what was listed on Oct 27, 2026MSC sells a South African holiday; the luxury lines sell a long voyage that happens to touch South Africa. If you want short and affordable, look at MSC’s dates. If you want the islands too, look at the 15-night segments. Seabound Journeys can price either against the flights before you commit.

04 · The ports
The map above has the long version for each. This is the short one, with links where we’ve built a full port guide.
Ships berth at E-Berth in Duncan Dock, about five minutes on foot from the Silo District. The region’s hub: almost every voyage on this page starts, ends or overnights here.
A Garden Route town between Cape Town and Gqeberha. Regent’s Voyager calls on January 31, 2027, and Princess plans its first call in 2028.
Lines still print it as Port Elizabeth. It’s the nearest city to the Eastern Cape reserves that describe themselves as malaria-free, including Addo.
MSC’s homeport, at the Nelson Mandela Cruise Terminal in the Point. Town is close, but take a taxi and agree the fare first.
A working harbor about a mile from town. The day goes to the dunes, the lagoon and Swakopmund. You need a Namibian visa.
The Christian Decotter terminal is a flat 10 to 15 minutes from the Caudan Waterfront and the market. Fill in the digital arrival form first.
Ships use an industrial quay at Port Est; leave by shuttle. The volcano and the mountain cirques are the draw, and they take time to reach.
No dedicated terminal; town is about 20 minutes on foot. File the Travel Authorisation on the government site, not a lookalike.
Docked or tendered, depending on the day. Stone Town is about 15 minutes from the pier. Bring small U.S. bills; this is still a cash place.
A secure container harbor, so plan on a shuttle, taxi or tuk-tuk to Fort and Pettah. Get the ETA online before you sail.
05 · When to go
The region runs on the southern summer, roughly November to April, busiest December to March. Tap a month to see what’s sailing in it.
Mid-season. Regent’s Seven Seas Voyager leaves Port Louis on January 17 for a 15-night run down to Cape Town, and Holland America’s Volendam sets off from Fort Lauderdale on its world voyage.
The count is only the sailings listed on this page, not every ship in the region.
Season window from the Seabound Cruise Atlas; departure dates from the lines and reports in the sources. Port Louis calls fall in the southwest Indian Ocean cyclone season, so a missed or swapped port is possible.
06 · Add the safari, or the train
If you’re flying this far, give the land its own days. Here are the three ways people stitch it together, with our guides for each.
Overnight near the airport. Long-haul delays happen, and the bush plane won’t wait.
Kruger’s fee for foreign adults is R692 a day from November 1, 2026. Private reserves drive off-road and after dark.
The reserve calls itself malaria-free. It’s about a one-hour shuttle flight from Johannesburg.
Give yourself at least one night before the ship. Table Mountain needs a clear morning.
Regent, Silversea and Oceania all start segments here. So does MSC, from March.
Addo, Shamwari and Kwandwe are described as malaria-free by South African Tourism. Gqeberha is the nearest city.

Pretoria to Cape Town, about 1,600 km across the Highveld and the Karoo. The longer of the two trains, with two off-train visits on the way.
Rovos also runs a two-night Durban journey, a neat way to reach MSC’s Durban sailings.
The same Pretoria–Cape Town route, one night shorter. Overall it’s cheaper, even though a night on Rovos in its smallest suite costs less than a night on the Blue Train in its smallest.
End in Cape Town and you can walk off the platform into a pre-cruise hotel night, then the ship.
Rovos Rail vs. the Blue Train: 2027 fares and routes · Every luxury train, compared
Viking Sky overnights in Zanzibar on its world voyage, and Regent’s Navigator calls at Dar es Salaam. Either can be the beach end of a Tanzania safari.
Remember the two Tanzania extras: a visa, and Zanzibar’s own compulsory travel insurance.
Rovos Rail’s 15-night epic covers 5,530 km, with two nights in Madikwe and a night at the Victoria Falls Hotel. It’s a trip in itself, not a pre-cruise night.
07 · Entry rules for U.S. passports
A single 15-night segment can cross four borders. Tick the places on your itinerary and we’ll stack up what you need before you fly. Checked October 27, 2026 against the State Department and official sources.
Your passport needs two consecutive, completely blank visa pages on every arrival — endorsement pages don’t count — or you can be refused entry. It must be valid 30 days past your exit. Bring a yellow fever certificate if you arrive from a WHO-designated risk country. Children face extra document rules; check Home Affairs before you go.
State Department: Level 2, increased caution (May 27, 2025)Apply ahead through Namibia’s online visa-on-arrival portal and carry a printed approval; Walvis Bay is one of the places it can also be issued on arrival. Six months of passport validity past arrival and three blank visa pages. Officials may ask for your itinerary, funds and insurance.
State Department: Level 2 (May 15, 2026)Passport valid for the whole stay, one blank page, and the Mauritius All-in-One Travel Digital Form within 72 hours before arrival. Ask your line whether it files that form for cruise guests. Proof of onward travel and funds can be requested.
State Department: Level 2 (Dec 8, 2025)Réunion sits outside the Schengen area. The French government asks for a passport valid three months past departure, with two blank pages, issued within the last ten years, and points visitors to its France-Visas Visa Assistant to confirm whether their passport needs a visa.
Service-public.gouv.fr; Air AustralSince late 2024 the Travel Authorisation covers sea arrivals, cruise passengers included. Apply up to 30 days ahead on the Seychelles Electronic Border System; the standard fee is about €10. Third-party sites charge more, and their applications may not be accepted.
Seychelles Department of Tourism; ATTA (Nov 6, 2024)Get the visa on arrival or as an e-visa from Tanzania’s Immigration Services Department. Six months of validity and a blank page per entry stamp. Zanzibar requires its own travel insurance, bought online or on arrival: $44 an adult, $22 for children 3 to 17. Ask your line how both apply on a day call.
State Department: Level 2 (Oct 16, 2026)Get the Electronic Travel Authorization online before arrival. Since May 25, 2026 the 30-day tourist visa is free for U.S. citizens, one of 40 countries on the list — the ETA itself is still mandatory.

What the CDC lists for each country on these itineraries. It’s a starting point for a conversation with your doctor, not a substitute for one.
The CDC lists no areas with malaria in any of the three.
Along the borders with Zimbabwe and Mozambique: parts of Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal, and Kruger National Park, where the CDC lists preventive medicine. Elsewhere it lists mosquito avoidance only.
The CDC lists the northern and eastern regions; Erongo, Walvis Bay’s region, isn’t one of them. Rare cases elsewhere call for mosquito avoidance.
The CDC recommends prescription antimalarials. Yellow fever vaccine is generally not recommended, but proof is required if you arrive from a country with risk.
All of Mozambique; all of Madagascar except rare cases in Antananarivo. The CDC lists preventive medicine for both. Mayotte has rare cases only.
The CDC’s global polio notice (Level 2, March 9, 2026) asks travelers to be up to date, and notes poliovirus found in Tanzania in the past year.
CDC malaria information by country and CDC Travelers’ Health (Tanzania), read October 27, 2026. For Réunion, check the CDC’s page directly. Some medicines must start before you travel, so see a doctor early.
09 · Getting there from the U.S.
Almost every sailing on this page starts and ends in different places. Price the open-jaw flights before you price the cabin.
Delta flies it nonstop on an Airbus A350-900. Published schedules run from October 24, 2026 to October 16, 2027.
United made Newark–Cape Town year-round in 2022 and has flown Newark–Johannesburg since 2021. Confirm the 2026–27 timetable with United before you book.
Delta has flown it for years. Again, confirm the days for your dates before you book a ship around it.
SAA stopped U.S. flights in 2020. As of April 2026 its return was still a plan, not a schedule.
Mauritius, the Seychelles and Sri Lanka have no nonstop flights from the U.S. that we know of, so a segment that ends there means a connection home. Fly in two nights early for a world-cruise leg — a missed ship in Cape Town has no easy next port.
10 · The verdict
This is a region for people with time. The flight is long, most ships sail one way, and the land days are as good as the sea days. Rush it and you pay for the airfare without the reason you came.
The choice is between a short local cruise, a luxury segment and a world-cruise leg. They share ports. They don’t share passengers, prices or pace.
Planning it with Seabound Journeys doesn’t add to your fare; the line pays us, and the price matches booking direct. What you get is the flights, the safari and the paperwork lined up before the deposit, not after.

11 · Quick answers
Roughly November to April, the southern summer, with the busiest stretch December to March. MSC Armonia starts its South African season in Durban on November 27, 2026 and moves to Cape Town in March 2027. The luxury segments and world-cruise legs we list fall between November and April.
MSC Cruises runs the only local season, on MSC Armonia from Durban and Cape Town. Regent Seven Seas and Silversea run 15- to 28-night segments from Cape Town to Mauritius, Singapore, Mumbai or Dakar, and Oceania sails Cape Town to Lisbon. Holland America and Viking call at Cape Town on their 2026–27 world voyages. Princess, Seabourn and Azamara return to the region in 2028.
Not for South Africa itself, for stays under 90 days, but you need two consecutive completely blank visa pages on every arrival. Other stops differ: Namibia requires a visa, the Seychelles a Travel Authorisation, Sri Lanka an ETA, and Tanzania a visa plus Zanzibar’s own insurance. Mauritius needs no visa for 60 days or less but asks for a digital arrival form.
It depends on the country. The CDC lists no malaria in Mauritius, the Seychelles or Sri Lanka. In South Africa it lists areas along the borders with Zimbabwe and Mozambique, including Kruger. Tanzania, including Zanzibar, has malaria in all areas below 1,800 m, and Mozambique in all areas. Ask your doctor about medicine for the stops on your itinerary.
Yes, and it’s the main reason to fly this far. The usual pattern is a few nights in Kruger, a private reserve or malaria-free Madikwe, a flight to Cape Town and a night there before the ship. The Eastern Cape reserves near Gqeberha, Addo among them, are another malaria-free option.
Yes, if your cruise starts in Cape Town. Both trains run Pretoria to Cape Town, about 1,600 km: Rovos Rail in three nights, the Blue Train in two. Rovos also has a two-night journey to Durban, MSC’s South African homeport. Plan a hotel night between the train and the ship.
Yes. Delta’s Atlanta to Cape Town nonstop is in published schedules through October 2027. United has flown Newark to Cape Town and Newark to Johannesburg for several years, and Delta flies Atlanta to Johannesburg; confirm the days for your dates. South African Airways has not resumed U.S. flights.
