Nothing closed, four peaks

Where to cruise inOctober

By one measure October is the fullest atlas of the year: every ocean region has sailings, from Alaska's last early-October ships to Antarctica's first late-October departures. Four are at peak, and three of those four are spending their last peak month.

In short

Where can I cruise in October?

Peak in October means the Mediterranean, Bermuda, Canada & New England and transatlantic crossings. Eleven more are open: the Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, Panama Canal, Alaska, Northern Europe, Hawaii & South Pacific, Asia, Australia & New Zealand, South America & Antarctica, the Arctic & Norwegian Fjords and the Galápagos.

Watch Asia at sub-area level: Japan and the Hong Kong–China–Korea–Taiwan circuit enter their typical autumn peak, a month before Singapore & Southeast Asia's dry season starts and all three peak together in November.

Nothing on the ocean side is closed. The Seine, Rhône and Columbia & Snake are the rivers at peak, all three for the last time this year, while the Danube and Rhine sail on past their summer busy months.

How to choose

October's choice: last peaks, first departures

For a sixth straight month the Mediterranean is the first-cruise answer, and October is the last of them — both sub-areas at peak, nine departure ports, the Eastern Med's season running one more month. Canada & New England is the foliage alternative, in its final peak month.

Fewer crowds: Northern Europe has just left peak — British Isles & Western Europe open, the Baltic closed for the year — and the Moselle is the river Cruise Critic names as October's good, quieter option. The Galápagos sits between its two busy stretches.

Expedition-wise, October is a first month, not a best one: Antarctic ships start departing late in the month with the December–February core still ahead. The Columbia Gorge is the scenic pick with a firm date — the Columbia & Snake's one peak month, and the only month Lindblad's Columbia-only harvest route runs.

River cruising

Rivers in October

October's three river peaks are all last-time-this-year peaks: the Seine before Giverny closes, the Rhône at the end of Tauck's season, and the Columbia & Snake in its one peak month. The Danube and Rhine have slipped to open; the Douro has one month left.

Looking ahead

November moves the peaks to the Pacific

November starts four new peaks — the Mexican Riviera, Asia, Australia & New Zealand and the Mekong — and ends six: the Mediterranean, Bermuda, Canada & New England, the Seine, the Rhône and the Columbia & Snake.

Alaska and the Columbia & Snake close after October. Transatlantic crossings keep their autumn peak through November, so a crossing is still a peak trip for one more month, and the Danube and Rhine stay open toward their Christmas-market sailings.

Quick answers

Cruising in October: questions

Where can I cruise in October?

Every ocean region on our atlas — all 15 — with the Mediterranean, Bermuda, Canada & New England and transatlantic crossings at peak. The other eleven — the Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, Panama Canal, Alaska, Northern Europe, Hawaii & South Pacific, Asia, Australia & New Zealand, South America & Antarctica, the Arctic & Norwegian Fjords and the Galápagos — are open, and the Seine, Rhône and Columbia & Snake are the rivers at peak.

Is the Baltic still sailing in October?

No. The Baltic capitals are a summer-only route, open May to September with a June–August peak, so October shows closed. British Isles & Western Europe is open — MSC's winter North Sea loops keep it on the atlas — and Copenhagen and Kiel see some shoulder-season turnarounds, so check your dates.

Which rivers are at their best in October?

The Seine, Rhône and Columbia & Snake, all in their last peak month. The Seine because Giverny closes after October, the Rhône because Tauck's season ends, the Columbia because October is the one peak month Lindblad's schedule supports; the Danube, Rhine, Douro, Nile and Mekong are open.

Is October a good month for a first cruise?

Yes, for one more month. The Mediterranean is at peak with nine departure ports and 18 ports of call, the most of any peak region in October, and the Eastern Med steps down in November — Canada & New England is the shorter first cruise if you're in the Northeast.

Which regions are quieter in October?

Eleven are open without peak. Northern Europe just after its summer, the Galápagos between busy stretches and the Mexican Riviera a month before its peak are three we'd shortlist; Alaska is the one to be careful with — a handful of early-October ships, shoulder conditions, no promise of every port or glacier.

When do Antarctica cruises start?

Late October, per our atlas, with expedition ships departing through March and the peak in December to February. The Brazil and Argentina coastal season starts in October too, and landings are conditional on weather, ice and permits whatever the departure date.
