The five questions we get about Melbourne
Tap the one you came with. Each opens at the answer.
Fifteen dates, nine ships
Most calls are ships passing through. Only the turnaround dates matter if you’re boarding.
Jump to the dates →What Station Pier has, and lacks
No bag storage, no rental desk, a gatehouse for drop-offs and a taxi rank on cruise days.
Jump to the pier →The airport run
SkyBus, taxi, rideshare or a rental car — and why none of them gets you to the pier in a straight line.
Jump to getting here →Entering Australia

Jump to entry →Can you park at the pier?
Limited charged parking exists. The rate and the overnight rule aren’t published.

Melbourne is a port of call first and a place to start a cruise second. The 2026-27 schedule marks only fifteen calls as turnarounds — the rest are ships passing through.
If you’re boarding here, you’re on one of those fifteen dates, and most of what follows hangs on that.
Every one of those calls is at Station Pier, 6 Waterfront Place, Port Melbourne. Ports Victoria publishes the schedule and the passenger rules.
Webb Dock is a container terminal — we found no cruise use for it this season. Your address is Waterfront Place, not Webb Dock.
The pier runs about 650 metres long and 52 metres wide, per a Victorian Government factsheet from October 2024. It has two terminal buildings, a gatehouse and a former railway station building, and in 2023-24 it handled a record 128 ship visits and 400,000 passengers and crew.
We checked everything below against the operators’ own pages on 6 October 2026. Where two sources disagree, we print both, not a guess.
The fifteen dates you can actually board
The season runs from Crown Princess on 11 October 2026 to Norwegian Spirit on 20 April 2027, and only some of those calls change passengers.
Below is every call the Ports Victoria 2026-27 schedule marks as a turnaround. Full means passengers change over completely — partial means more than 500 board or leave without a full turnaround. The schedule says it was valid as of 12 August 2026.
| Date | Ship | Turnaround |
|---|---|---|
| 11 Oct 2026 | Crown Princess | Partial |
| 20 Nov 2026 | Grand Princess | Partial |
| 17 Dec 2026 | Grand Princess | Partial |
| 2–3 Jan 2027 | Silver Moon | Full |
| 4 Jan 2027 | Azamara Pursuit | Full |
| 4 Jan 2027 | AIDAsol | Partial |
| 28 Jan 2027 | Grand Princess | Partial |
| 3 Feb 2027 | Regatta | Full |
| 4 Feb 2027 | Royal Princess | Partial |
| 9 Feb 2027 | Coral Adventurer | Full |
| 24 Mar 2027 | Carnival Adventure | Full |
| 30 Mar 2027 | Carnival Adventure | Full |
| 3 Apr 2027 | Carnival Adventure | Full |
| 6 Apr 2027 | Grand Princess | Partial |
| 7 Apr 2027 | Carnival Adventure | Full |
Carnival Adventure’s homeport calls sit on the Outer West berth, arriving between 07:00 and 08:00 and sailing at 16:00. We didn’t read berths for the other ships, and the schedule gives no boarding windows.
Source: Ports Victoria’s 2026-27 cruise ship schedule, read October 6, 2026. As our reader summarised it, the schedule shows Carnival Adventure under a P&O label, while press calls the ship Carnival’s, so go by your booking for the line. The schedule can change, so confirm your own date with your cruise line.
The same schedule lists Celebrity, Viking, Holland America, Norwegian, Regent, Seabourn, Crystal and Hapag-Lloyd calls. None is marked as a turnaround — so you won’t board those ships here.
Phillip Island and Geelong appear as regional calls between December 2026 and April 2027. They’re stops, not homeports.
You may have read that Princess left Melbourne after a berthing-fee dispute, and press reports said as much. The official schedule still lists Princess partial turnarounds on six dates this season — so confirm your sailing with Princess and read our Princess guide for the line itself.
What Station Pier lets you do on boarding day
On cruise days Station Pier is open to ticketed passengers and authorised staff only, during the embarkation times your cruise line approves.
That’s Ports Victoria’s rule, and it shapes the whole morning: nobody waves you in to look around. Treat the pier as a gate, not a waiting room.
The state factsheet counts two active shipping berths, but the 2026-27 schedule uses three berth codes: Outer West, Outer East and Inner West. We can’t reconcile those from here — so we won’t tell you how many berths work.
We also didn’t find which line uses which of the two terminal buildings. Your boarding document says where to go.
| Question | What Ports Victoria says |
|---|---|
| Address | 6 Waterfront Place, Port Melbourne VIC 3207 |
| Drop-off | By private car, commercial passenger vehicle or taxi at the Gatehouse, where boarding passes are screened |
| Pick-up | Disembarking passengers leave through the Gatehouse and can be met in Waterfront Place. Private vehicles wait in the carpark at the pier entrance |
| Bags | No luggage storage on the pier. Unattended luggage is not permitted |
| Taxis | A rank is set up on the pier on cruise-ship visit days |
| Rental cars | No car rental agencies near the pier |
| myki (transit card) | A desk in the International Cruise Ship Terminal sells it. Mobile myki works on Android through Google Wallet |
| Accessibility | Passengers with special needs should ask the ship operator’s customer service staff how to reach the carpark. We found no wider statement |
| Parking | Limited public parking in Waterfront Place, charges apply, no rate published |

Melbourne Airport to the pier: 17 miles and no train
Melbourne Airport is about 28.3 km (17.6 miles) from the pier by road on our main routing — 34 minutes free-flow, with no traffic in the number, from coordinates we chose near the airport. Two other runs from different airport points gave 26.4 to 26.5 km and 27 to 29 minutes — so read the drive as roughly 26 to 28 km.
The airport has no train, and its own site has a page on why one isn’t yet an option. We confirmed no train to the pier either — so what’s left is a bus, a car or a tram.
The airport’s new T123 Transport Hub, off Exit 19 of the Tullamarine Freeway, takes over pick-ups and drop-offs from 6 October 2026. The old forecourt is now for commercial vehicles such as SkyBus, taxis and rideshare — so directions written before that date may send you to the wrong place.
| Option | Route | What we know |
|---|---|---|
| SkyBus | Airport to Southern Cross Station | A$25.90 (about US$18) one way, A$43.40 (about US$30) return, child (4 to 16) A$6.60 (about US$5) one way. It does not stop at the pier, and we did not verify a combined route onward |
| Taxi | Ranks at the airport | Metered. No fixed fare to the pier found; the ESC (September 2025) and Safe Transport Victoria (July 2026) schedules differ, so we print neither. The airport says the CBD is about a 30-minute taxi ride |
| Rideshare | Designated pick-up zones | The airport charges A$4.48 (about US$3) a trip, which may be passed on to you. Its page may predate the 6 October changes |
| Rental car | Counters at the airport | Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Redspot and SIXT, on the ground floor of the T123 Car Park opposite Terminal 2 |
| Avalon Airport | SkyBus to Southern Cross | About 56.2 km (34.9 miles) and 50 minutes to the pier by our routing. SkyBus adult fares start from A$25 (about US$17) one way; journey time not stated |
| City to pier | Tram 109, stop 129 Beacon Cove | A 560-metre walk to the stop, then about 18 minutes to the city. Weekday trams run every 5 to 6 minutes at peak and 10 to 12 otherwise, per Transport Victoria’s 2025-26 season page |
Dollar figures use the European Central Bank reference rates of Oct 6, 2026 (about 70 US cents to the Australian dollar) — your card's rate will differ.
SkyBus quotes two prices on two pages. The fares page prints A$25.90 (about US$18) one way and A$43.40 (about US$30) return, while the home page prints A$21.70 (about US$15) each way.
Halve the return fare and it works out to A$21.70 (about US$15) each way, so the two pages may agree — but neither says so. We’d book at the fares-page figure and check.
The hours conflict too. The airport’s page says every 10 minutes, 24 hours a day, while SkyBus says 4:00 am to 1:00 am — so if you land after midnight, don’t count on it.
The last mile. From the city, tram 109 is the plain route. Ports Victoria also runs an express Bus 109 from the pier on cruise days, 8 am to 5 pm and about 15 minutes to the city, with staff helping at the pier in the morning.
One Ports Victoria page, as our reader summarised it, ties the shuttle to cruise days that aren’t turnaround visits. We couldn’t confirm that, and the season page we found is for 2025-26. On your boarding day, plan on the tram or a taxi, not the shuttle — treat the shuttle as a bonus.
Both run on myki. We couldn’t retrieve a fare, so we print none.
A rental car. It works for the airport leg — not for the pier, which has no rental desk and no confirmed place to leave the car. Melbourne’s toll-road figures conflict between pages, so we print none.
Three rental pages take it from here: should you rent at all, airport to port and the rental hub.
The Discover Cars review covers the comparison site.
Bags, and when the pier lets you in
Ports Victoria doesn’t publish boarding times, because each cruise line sets its own. The number that counts is on your boarding document, not here: Carnival Adventure arrives by 08:00 and sails at 16:00 — so the ship is alongside early, but that doesn’t tell you when check-in opens.
We also found nothing on porterage or bag drop by line. Ask your cruise line before you leave home.
The pier side we do know: there’s nowhere to leave bags, and unattended luggage isn’t allowed. So your bags travel with you from the hotel, or from the airport, to the gatehouse.
Book the ride with that in mind. A tram with two large cases is a plan, not a comfortable one, and the 560-metre walk to the stop is part of it.
Getting into Australia on a US passport: what we couldn’t confirm
We couldn’t confirm the entry rules for American passport holders from a primary page — so we won’t guess at them. Here’s what we did read.
A search snippet of the Home Affairs page for the Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601) says visitors may enter as often as they like over 12 months and stay up to three months each time. The page we reached did not confirm US eligibility, the fee, passport validity or how a cruise passenger applies.
Australian Border Force says its incoming passenger card applies to people arriving by ship as well as by air.
The card asks for a flight number or the ship’s name, with customs and quarantine declarations. Cruise lines often handle clearance on the way in, but we couldn’t confirm whether the card is paper or digital in 2026.
We didn’t read the biosecurity list — so we can’t tell you what to leave at home.
Read the declaration list before you pack, and check the Home Affairs and Border Force pages and your cruise line’s documents before you book a flight.
Money. Prices here are in Australian dollars, with US figures converted at the rate noted above.
The tram and bus need myki, and the desk in the cruise terminal sells it. We didn’t research card acceptance or tipping — so we say nothing about either.
Three hotels, three ways to spend the night before
No hotel in our research publishes a ride to Station Pier or a bag transfer to the ship — so the hotel decision is mostly distance and your flight. Three show how the choices split:
| Hotel | Where | One thing to know |
|---|---|---|
| The Hamptons Apartments | Port Melbourne | Its own page is the only one on the ranked list to print a distance to Station Pier: 350 metres. (Sofitel, on the splurge list, prints one too, in the next row.) These are serviced apartments, and the page doesn’t state check-in time, bag hold or parking. Ask us about it. |
| Sofitel Melbourne on Collins | Collins Street, CBD | Accor lists Station Pier at 5 km and a 15-minute drive. A shuttle appears among its services, with no price and no destination stated. It sits on the splurge list. |
| Holiday Inn Melbourne Airport | Airport | 400 metres, a five-minute walk, from Terminals 1, 2 and 3 per the hotel. An on-demand shuttle runs 24 hours at A$3 (about US$2) a person to the airport and free from it, and the front desk stores bags. About 17.6 miles from the pier by our routing. |
The full ranking is on the night-before list. Flying in? The airport page lines the routes up side by side.
A gap before sailing: how much city you actually get
Do the arithmetic before the sightseeing. Count the 560-metre walk to the tram stop and about 18 minutes on tram 109, each way, and a three-hour gap leaves a bit over two hours in the city before you start back.
You won’t have anywhere to drop bags, either. The pier stores none, and a few hotels print a bag hold for guests — the Crown hotels in Southbank and Holiday Inn Melbourne Airport among them — but that’s a guest service, not a public locker.
So the city is for people travelling light, and a long day trip is for a ship that sails late.
Our Melbourne port page covers what is free in the city, and the excursion guide covers whether the Great Ocean Road and Phillip Island fit your all-aboard time.
Whatever you pick, put the all-aboard time in your phone — before you leave the pier, not after.
Parking at the pier: don’t count on it
Don’t plan a week’s stay around the pier lot. Ports Victoria says limited public parking exists in Waterfront Place next to the pier — and that charges apply.
It prints no rate, no booking rule and no overnight rule, and we won’t manufacture one.
The parking page has what we could confirm, the Victorian road rules that matter if you drive, and the ways to skip the car.
Can you park at Station Pier for a cruise?
The pier lot, a central-city car park as a yardstick, what “cruise days” change at the gate and the alternatives to driving.
Compare your options →Tell us the date
Tell us your ship and your date, and we will fill in the rest.
Give us the ship, the date and where you are flying from. We will say what is confirmed for Station Pier and what is not, priced before you commit.
We check each answer against the line’s or hotel’s own page and date it.
Questions, answered
Which ships start a cruise at Station Pier this season?
Fifteen calls on the 2026-27 schedule are marked as turnarounds, where passengers board. Eight are full and seven partial, meaning more than 500 passengers change over.
The ships are Crown Princess, Grand Princess, Royal Princess, AIDAsol, Silver Moon, Azamara Pursuit, Regatta, Coral Adventurer and Carnival Adventure.
Every other call is a ship passing through. The schedule says it was valid as of 12 August 2026 — so check your own booking.
How do I get from Melbourne Airport to Station Pier?
About 28.3 km (17.6 miles) and 34 minutes on our main free-flow routing, with no traffic in the number — two other runs gave 26.4 to 26.5 km and 27 to 29 minutes. SkyBus doesn’t go to the pier. It runs to Southern Cross Station.
Taxi ranks and rideshare pick-up sit at the airport.
We found no fixed fare to the pier, and the two taxi fare schedules we read disagree — so we print none. A rental car works for the airport leg, but the pier has no rental desk.
Is there luggage storage at Station Pier?
No.
None on the pier. Ports Victoria says there are no luggage storage facilities there and that unattended luggage isn’t permitted.
We found nothing on porterage or bag drop by cruise line — so your boarding document and your line are where to ask.
Do Americans need a visa to start a cruise in Melbourne?
We couldn’t confirm that from a primary page. A search snippet of the Home Affairs page for the Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601) says visitors may enter as often as they like in 12 months and stay up to three months each time, but the page we reached didn’t confirm US eligibility, the fee or how a cruise passenger applies.
Australian Border Force says the incoming passenger card applies to ship arrivals as well as flights, with customs and quarantine declarations on it.
Read both pages and your cruise line’s documents before you book flights.
Can I park at Station Pier?
Ports Victoria says limited public parking is available in Waterfront Place next to the pier, and that charges apply. It publishes no rate, booking rule or overnight rule.
So we can’t tell you a week is allowed, or what it costs. The parking page has what we could confirm, and the alternatives.
