Melbourne Cruise Port Rental Cars: Desks, Hours and Parking at Station Pier

Ports Victoria says there are no car rental agencies near Station Pier and no luggage storage on it. The nearest desks we could read are at the airport, about 17.6 miles (28.3 km) away by our routing, and in the city, where weekend hours end at noon or 2:00 PM. Parking at the pier is limited, charged and unpriced on the official page. This page lists what each desk publishes and what we couldn’t read, so you can decide before you book a car for sailing day.

The pier

Nobody rents cars at Station Pier, and the pier can’t hold your bags

Start with the absence, because everything else on this page works around it.

Ports Victoria says there are no car rental agencies near Station Pier and no luggage storage on the pier, and it adds that unattended luggage isn’t permitted there.

That decides the shape of every plan with a car: you collect it somewhere else and bring it to the port, or you skip it, because the pier itself is no place to leave one.

Drop-off by private car, taxi or commercial passenger vehicle is allowed at the Gatehouse. Pick-ups wait in the carpark at the pier entrance, and only ticketed passengers and staff go onto the pier during embarkation. On cruise-ship visit days the same page has a taxi rank set up on the pier.

The address is 6 Waterfront Place, Port Melbourne, and the tram stop is a 560 m walk from the terminal — a long push with cruise bags, so a taxi or a drop-off is the easier start.

Ports Victoria doesn’t publish embarkation times, because each line sets its own. Ask your line, not the port, before you book a car for the morning.

Desk hours

Five desks, and which of them are open when you need one

The hours are short in town and long at the airport.

Pick the day your ship docks and the time you could reach a counter. The checker uses the hours each page printed on Oct 6, 2026.

The airport counters keep flight hours, not office hours. The city branches close between noon and 5:00 PM — a Sunday disembark means the airport or nothing.

Sixt’s page lists Monday to Sunday, 06:00 to 23:00.

Minimum age 21 with a valid licence — luxury cars and vans can need 25 or older. We didn’t read the young-driver fee.

Returns run around the clock — so a ship that docks late doesn’t strand the car.

    Avis

Avis’s page lists Sunday to Saturday, 05:00 AM to 12:00 AM.

The page lists an after-hours drop box beside the Avis Preferred office in the domestic car park. Its phone number was a Sydney one, so we print none.

Use the drop box for a return outside the counter’s hours.

The page lists Monday to Thursday, 07:30 AM to 04:00 PM.

We read nothing about after-hours returns here, and the hours were read by a summarising tool — so confirm them.

Short hours and a Saturday noon close make this a poor place to end a cruise.

The longest weekend hours of the city branches we read.

Closes at 2:00 PM on weekends.

The airport’s own page lists Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Redspot and Sixt, with counters on the ground floor of the T123 car park opposite Terminal 2, and says most operate during flight hours — so confirm with your provider. It prints no hours or phone numbers.

Hertz’s Melbourne location pages block our reader, so we have no Hertz hours — its undated Australian charges PDF is where the young-driver and one-way wording below comes from.

We found nothing on Thrifty for Melbourne. We read no Europcar or Redspot hours either — so those brands aren’t on the list.

We read the Avis and Budget pages through a summarising tool — so we mark them as less certain than Sixt’s own page. Call the branch for any hour that decides your plan.

Most rental terms in Melbourne aren’t on the pages we could reach.

Sixt’s Melbourne Airport page and Hertz’s Australian charges PDF; the rest we looked for and didn’t find.

A driver under 25 should price Hertz’s fee first, not last. Seven days at A$16.50 is A$115.50 (about US$80), our arithmetic, if the PDF still applies — and it’s undated.

Brands quote a one-way fee at booking — so any plan that picks up in town and returns at the airport needs a real quote. The one-way page explains why those fees exist.

We assume a rental quote includes GST, and it’s only an assumption — read the line on your own quote.

    Parking

The pier says limited and charged. It never says how much

A rental that waits out a cruise needs somewhere to wait, and the official answer is thin.

Ports Victoria’s cruise passenger page and one Wilson Parking location, read Oct 6, 2026.

Ports Victoria says limited public parking is available in Waterfront Place next to Station Pier and that charges apply, and prints no rate, no overnight rule and no booking.

One third-party port directory says the terminal has no public parking — we went with the official page.

So we can’t price a week at the pier, and we won’t guess one. The Southbank figures are an example, not a rate, from a car park that doesn’t offer cruise stays.

If a car has to sit through the cruise, ask Ports Victoria for a rate and a booking rule first — the number we’d want isn’t on its page. Our parking guide covers the port’s other options.

    The season

Most calls this season don’t turn around, so most ships just visit

A rental suits a turnaround. A transit call usually doesn’t need one.

Ports Victoria’s 2026-27 schedule, valid as of Aug 12, 2026, runs from Crown Princess on Oct 11, 2026 to Norwegian Spirit on Apr 20, 2027. Only a few calls are marked turnarounds: Silver Moon on Jan 2-3, Azamara Pursuit on Jan 4, Regatta on Feb 3, Coral Adventurer on Feb 9 and Carnival Adventure on Mar 24, 30, Apr 3 and 7, 2027 — Crown Princess (Oct 11), Grand Princess (four dates), AIDAsol (Jan 4) and Royal Princess (Feb 4) are partial turnarounds, and every other call is a transit call.

That matters for a rental, because a transit call means passengers step off and back on with no luggage and no car to return — a day pass, not a pick-up.

On a turnaround you’d carry bags, and the pier, the tram and a taxi decide the morning, not a desk.

The Carnival Adventure sailings in March 2027 arrive 7:00 to 8:00 AM and depart at 4:00 PM at the Outer West berth, per the schedule. The schedule prints a berth and times, not an embarkation window.

The list is Ports Victoria’s, valid as of Aug 12, 2026, and lines change calls. Our port guide has the tram and the walk into town.

    Last morning

Disembark day: the tram, the rank and the car park at the gate

What the last morning looks like without a car — so you can judge what a car would add.

Disembarking passengers leave through the Gatehouse. Friends and family can wait in Waterfront Place, but a private vehicle has to wait in the carpark at the pier entrance.

Tram 109 leaves from stop 129 Beacon Cove, a 560 m walk from the terminal, and takes about 18 minutes to the city — the cruise-day express Bus 109 runs 8 am to 5 pm and takes about 15, per Ports Victoria and Transport Victoria’s 2025-26 season page.

myki is sold at the desk in the terminal — we found no fare amount.

If you plan to collect a car on the way out of town, work backwards from the desk, not from your flight. A Saturday arrival in the city has four to six hours before the branches shut, and Sunday has fewer.

The airport run is a separate decision, and our airports page and the airport rental page cover it.

Skip the car on the last morning if your flight leaves that day — the taxi rank is waiting, and a returned car is one more stop.

    If you rent

If you’ve decided to drive, book for the days you’ll use the car

For the traveler who has read the rest and still wants keys.

Rent for the days you’ll drive, not the cruise week. Collect from a desk whose hours fit your landing — and return the car before you board.

Carry a licence Victoria accepts. The licence section has VicRoads’ wording. Our Discover Cars review covers deposits and coverage, which no Melbourne brand we read printed.

    FAQ

    Rental questions Melbourne cruisers ask

Can I pick up a rental car at the pier?

No. Ports Victoria says there are no car rental agencies near Station Pier. The desks we could read are at Melbourne Airport and in the city, and none says it delivers to the pier.

Can a car stay at Station Pier through the whole cruise?

We couldn’t confirm it. Ports Victoria says limited public parking is available in Waterfront Place and that charges apply, and it prints no rate or overnight rule. Ask before you leave a car.

Which rental counters are open early or late?

At the airport, Sixt lists 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM daily with 24-hour returns, and Avis lists 5:00 AM to midnight with an after-hours drop box. The city branches we read close by 5:00 PM on weekdays and between noon and 2:00 PM at weekends.

Is there a left-luggage counter at the terminal?

Not on the pier. Ports Victoria says there are no luggage storage facilities on Station Pier and that unattended luggage isn’t permitted.

What’s the minimum age to hire a car in Melbourne?

Sixt says 21, with some vehicle types at 25 or older. Hertz’s undated PDF lists an A$16.50 daily young-driver fee for drivers 24 and under. We didn’t read Avis’s or Europcar’s rules.

Will my ship start its cruise in Melbourne this season?

Probably not. Ports Victoria’s 2026-27 schedule marks only a handful of turnarounds, among them Silver Moon, Azamara Pursuit, Regatta, Coral Adventurer and Carnival Adventure, and calls Crown Princess, Grand Princess, AIDAsol and Royal Princess partial. Check your own booking.
