Four rows, then a verdict for a Melbourne week
Arrival, daytime plans, headcount, driver. One tap per row.
The days row and the driver row weigh most — headcount only tips a close call.
Station Pier has a tram line, a cruise-day bus and a taxi rank — so a car is a day-out tool, not a transfer. It starts to matter when the plan leaves the city for a whole day.
Even then, price the driver before the saving. A driver new to trams and hook turns is the real cost, not the daily rate.
Where a car pays, and where it only sits
Count which column your week fills faster.
Rent when
- You’ve driven on the left and are happy with trams beside you
- The days you’d drive are well outside the city
- You can collect and return the car at hours a desk actually publishes
- Your quote lists tolls, tax and the deposit up front
Skip it when
- You land at Tullamarine and go straight to the ship
- Your days are the CBD, the laneways and the market
- Nobody wants to pay for parking at a pier that prices none
- The driver has never made a right turn from the left lane
Weekends cut the choice down, because the city branches we read close at noon or 2:00 PM. A Sunday morning pick-up means the airport.
If a car is only for the trip to the pier, the cab wins on hassle, not just cost. The airport page shows the working.
What Victoria says a visitor can drive on
VicRoads says a valid overseas licence is enough for a visit. A rental company can still ask for more.
VicRoads says a visitor staying under 6 months can drive on an overseas licence or learner permit, provided it’s valid and in English or carried with a translation. A UN-convention International Driving Permit may travel alongside it. A US licence is in English — so this page doesn’t require a permit.
The page says nothing about what a rental company will insist on, and we read no brand’s own licence rule — so ask the company before you fly.
If a company does ask for an International Driving Permit, get it before you fly. It’s a form and a photo at home, not an errand for the arrivals hall.
Under six months is the visitor rule. Longer stays mean converting a licence, which is a different page and a different problem.
Age limits and deposits belong on your quote, not in our guesses. The hub page lists the two figures brands printed.
Hook turns, trams and a drink limit below the American one
The rules that trip up visitors are the tram ones, and the hook turn is the one people dread.
Australia drives on the left, though we didn’t confirm that from a Victorian source — so check the rental company’s own briefing.
A hook turn is a right turn made from the left lane. Where it’s signed, you wait on the far left, enter the intersection without blocking pedestrians, and go when the lights on the road you’re entering turn green. It’s most common in the CBD and inner suburbs.
Victorian rules have you stop behind a tram at a roadside tram stop and not pass its back end. Tram lanes are off limits except to avoid an obstacle, overtake a bike rider or turn right, for no more than 50 m.
On unsigned roads it’s 50 km/h (31 mph) in built-up areas and 100 km/h (62 mph) in the country.
Most fully licensed drivers must be below 0.05 BAC, against 0.08 in most US states — we found no wording on visiting full-licence holders and no dollar penalty.
The page prints an on-the-spot fine of A$484 and 4 demerit points for illegal phone use — fines are indexed each year, so treat it as possibly stale. A phone may be used for calls, audio and navigation only in a fixed holder or with no touching.
Set the sat-nav to English before you leave the car park, and ask the desk whether the car is an automatic — we read no brand’s wording on either.
Tolls are on the airport page, because that’s where a first-time driver meets them.
The Great Ocean Road is the day a car is for, and we couldn’t price the drive
Most Melbourne days out are tours or a tram. One is a drive.
Our own excursion guide describes the Great Ocean Road as a round trip of roughly 13 hours, from about A$95 an adult with a representative operator. It’s that guide’s figure, not one we re-checked for this page.
We found no official drive distance or time from the pier to the Road, and no parking or fuel price along it — so we won’t print one.
A self-drive day of that length means roads you’ve never driven, with a ship that won’t wait. A tour carries that risk for you.
Phillip Island’s Penguin Parade is an evening event, not a daytime one — the excursion guide says tours commonly return around 9:30 to 9:45 PM. That only works for a ship that sails late.
Check your all-aboard time first. The excursion guide lists the tours and their return times, and a car is a poor fit for a call that ends at 4:00 PM.
The fares a car would replace
Each row gets you to the pier with nothing to park.
| Ride | Fare, read Oct 6, 2026 | Note | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taxi, airport to the pier | About A$63 by day, more overnight | Our arithmetic on the regulator’s maximum and a 28.3 km routing, before tolls and extras | Our arithmetic |
| SkyBus, airport to Southern Cross | Priced per adult; the fare is on the airport page | It doesn’t go to the pier | SkyBus |
| Rideshare, airport to the pier | Fare not read | The airport adds a per-trip charge to its pick-ups | Airport page |
| Tram 109 or cruise-day Bus 109 | A myki fare, amount not found | About 18 minutes by tram | Ports Victoria |
Fares from the Essential Services Commission, Safe Transport Victoria, SkyBus, Melbourne Airport and Ports Victoria; dollar conversions at the ECB rate of Oct 6, 2026.
The taxi rows are maximums worked out from regulators’ tariffs, not fares anyone quoted us. A real trip can come in lower — or pick up tolls and a rank fee.
The airport page shows both regulators’ numbers and why they differ.
SkyBus is the lower fare, not the whole trip: it stops at Southern Cross — so you still need a tram or a cab.
Set any car against the cab before you decide. Two people in one taxi pay about half each, and nobody has to find parking.
Booking for the days you’ll actually drive
You’ve weighed it and the answer was still yes. Here’s how to book it.
Rent for the driving days only, and pick up near where they start.
The hub page lists the desks that publish hours, and our review explains how Discover Cars handles deposits and coverage.
- Pick-up: pick a branch on their site
- No Melbourne price from us to quote
- Many companies side by side
- Cancel free up to 48 hrs before pickup
The ECB’s Oct 6, 2026 rate, about 70 US cents to the Australian dollar, sits behind every dollar figure here — your card will use its own.
Quick answers before you decide on a car
Will a car earn its keep on a Melbourne cruise?
Usually not for the sailing. Station Pier has a tram, a cruise-day bus and a taxi rank, parking there is limited and unpriced, and a taxi from the airport is about A$63 by our arithmetic on the maximum fare.
Does a US driver need an International Driving Permit in Victoria?
VicRoads says a visitor staying under six months can drive on a valid overseas licence, if it’s in English or comes with a translation. A US licence is in English. A rental company can still ask for more — so check with it.
Which side of the road do they use in Victoria?
We didn’t read a Victorian page that says so outright. The state’s hook-turn rule has you turn right from the left lane, which points to traffic keeping left. Trams share the road in the city.
What’s a hook turn, in plain words?
A right turn made from the left lane at signed intersections, mostly in the CBD and inner suburbs. You wait on the far left, then go when the lights on the road you’re entering turn green. Fines and demerit points apply to getting it wrong.
How strict is Victoria on drink-driving?
Most fully licensed drivers must be below 0.05 blood alcohol, under the 0.08 most US states use. We found no wording for visiting drivers and no dollar penalty.
Can I reach Station Pier from the airport without a car?
A taxi is about A$63 by day on our arithmetic. SkyBus costs A$25.90 an adult to Southern Cross, then you take tram 109 or a cab, since SkyBus doesn’t serve the pier.

Rather have someone else work it out?
Send the ship’s name and your dates. An advisor decides car or no car with you and books the rest, at no extra cost.
