Melbourne starts at a pier and a tram stop
Every cruise call here ties up at Station Pier, 6 Waterfront Place, in Port Melbourne.
Ports Victoria runs the schedule and the passenger rules, so it’s the first source we read.
The pier is about 650 m long and 52 m wide, per an October 2024 Victorian Government factsheet — with two terminal buildings, a gatehouse and a former railway station building.
Ports Victoria’s 2026-27 schedule uses three berth codes: Outer West, Outer East and Inner West.
The same factsheet counts two active shipping berths, so we won’t say how many work at once. The Spirit of Tasmania ferry used to call here and is moving to Corio Quay, north of Geelong; we couldn’t confirm when.
It’s a busy pier. The factsheet counted a record 128 ship visits and about 400,000 passengers and crew in 2023-24.
The city is close, but you can’t walk it.
Station Pier sits on Port Phillip Bay, and on cruise days it’s open to ticketed passengers and authorised staff only — so don’t plan to stroll it.
The trip starts with a roughly 560 m walk to the Beacon Cove tram stop. From there tram route 109 takes about 18 minutes to the city, with weekday trams every 5 to 6 minutes at peak and 10 to 12 otherwise, per Transport Victoria’s 2025-26 season page.
On cruise days Ports Victoria also runs an express Bus 109 from the pier, 8 am to 5 pm, about 15 minutes to the city. Transport Victoria lists it every 5 to 10 minutes in the morning.
One Ports Victoria page appears to tie the shuttle to cruise days that aren’t turnarounds. We couldn’t confirm that, so if you’re boarding, count on the tram or a taxi.
Both the tram and the bus need a myki card. A desk in the International Cruise Ship Terminal sells it, and mobile myki works on Android through Google Wallet. We found no published dollar fare for the trip.
A taxi rank is set up on the pier on cruise-ship days, if you’d rather skip the walk to Beacon Cove.
Don’t build a plan on your line’s old Melbourne itinerary.
You may have read that cruise lines left Melbourne over berthing fees. We couldn’t confirm the fee figures, or who withdrew, from a government or port-authority source, so we don’t repeat them.
What we can read is the schedule. Ports Victoria’s 2026-27 listing, valid as of 12 August 2026, still shows Princess partial turnarounds on six dates and four Carnival Adventure turnarounds in March and April 2027.
The Princess ships on those six dates are Crown Princess, Grand Princess and Royal Princess.
Schedules move, and a published one is a snapshot, not a promise.
So confirm your own sailing date with your cruise line before you book flights.
Our Melbourne cruise guide lists the turnaround dates one by one.
In the city, most of the sightseeing is free to look at.
Hosier Lane’s street art, the Block and Royal Arcades and the Yarra River promenade are public places you can walk through without paying.
Queen Victoria Market is free to browse, and buying is optional. Melbourne has had a free tram zone around the CBD, but we couldn’t confirm it’s still running — check with Public Transport Victoria before you plan around it.
The Great Ocean Road is the classic day trip, and a long one.
Tourism Australia puts the Twelve Apostles about 240 km from Melbourne, a scenic drive of around 4.5 hours one way.
That makes any tour a full day. We didn’t confirm an operator’s pickup time, return time or price, so we’re not quoting one.
Compare the return time with your all-aboard before you book — ship tour or independent.
The Penguin Parade needs a late sailing, so check that first.
The parade is an evening event on Phillip Island, outside Melbourne. We didn’t confirm tour timings or drive times, so we won’t give you a return time.
It only works if your ship sails late. I’d treat it as a no unless your all-aboard is well into the evening, and ask your line before you pay a deposit.
The season is short, and the weather doesn’t read the schedule.
Ports Victoria’s 2026-27 schedule runs from Crown Princess on 11 October 2026 to Norwegian Spirit on 20 April 2027, as of its 12 August 2026 listing.
Then there’s the weather.
Melbourne’s reputation is four seasons in one day, so pack layers in any month.

Six numbers for the pier and the day
The schedule names Outer West, Outer East and Inner West, while the state factsheet counts two active shipping berths. Your cruise documents say where your ship goes.
A roughly 560 m walk to the Beacon Cove stop, then tram route 109 (about 18 minutes). The cruise-day Bus 109 takes about 15. Both need myki.
Crown Princess, Grand Princess and Royal Princess are marked as partial turnarounds, meaning more than 500 passengers board or leave. Check your date.
24 Mar, 30 Mar, 3 Apr and 7 Apr 2027, arriving between 07:00 and 08:00 and sailing at 16:00 from the Outer West berth.
Tourism Australia gives about 240 km. Count both directions against your all-aboard time.
An evening event, so it’s workable only if your ship sails late. We didn’t confirm tour timings.
What’s within reach once you’re in the city
Hosier Lane, the arcades, the market and the river promenade make an easy afternoon once the tram drops you in the CBD. The Great Ocean Road and Phillip Island are full-day or evening commitments stacked on the transfer. Pick one, not both.
Where Melbourne sits on the coast
Melbourne can be one stop on a coastal run that includes Sydney or on a longer Australia and New Zealand sailing. Tour-by-tour, see our Melbourne shore excursion guide; for the season as a whole, our Australia & New Zealand cruises guide.
Where the detail lives
The paid-excursion picks live in their own guide, which we keep current separately. This page stays at the orientation level on purpose.
Booking a tour yourself? Our comparison of Shore Excursions Group and Viator covers which of the two suits which kind of port day — and when the ship’s own tour still makes more sense.
Melbourne shore excursions
The transfer into town is short. What to check is whether your line is still calling here, and which day trip your all-aboard time can carry.

Money and the myki.
You’ll pay in Australian dollars. The tram and the bus need a myki card, sold at a desk in the cruise terminal, or mobile myki on Android through Google Wallet.
We didn’t research tipping or card acceptance, so we won’t tell you either way.
Boarding day is a different job from a port day.
If you’re boarding, you’re carrying bags, and the pier stores none. The 560 m walk to the tram stop is yours to plan around.
The shuttle times we found come from Transport Victoria’s 2025-26 season page, so check the 2026-27 version before you lean on them.
We found no fixed taxi fare to or from the pier. Ask the driver for an estimate before you get in.
On the fee story, trust your line’s schedule over the headlines.
We found no government or port-authority page that confirms the fee figures repeated online, so we left them out.
The official schedule is what we could read, and this season it still shows Princess and Carnival Adventure turnarounds.
Check your line’s itinerary directly, and again before final payment.
In the city, plan around what’s free and what isn’t.
Hosier Lane, the arcades and the river promenade are public and cost nothing to walk through.
The ride in from the pier is a paid myki trip, so budget for it even if the free tram zone still applies.
Great Ocean Road: the arithmetic.
At Tourism Australia’s scenic-drive figure, that’s about nine hours of driving before you stop anywhere, plus the transfer from the pier.
It leaves little margin for a late coach.
Book a tour with a return time you could miss by an hour and still make the ship.
Phillip Island is an evening, not a half day.
The parade comes at the end of the day, so a tour that fits it will run into the evening. We didn’t confirm return times.
Operator prices vary and we didn’t confirm any, so we left the figures out. Compare two operators on your date.
Season and layers.
The Transport Victoria cruise-season page we found is for 2025-26, so its tram and shuttle details may change. Recheck for 2026-27.
Pack layers for any month and expect the weather to turn quickly.

We found no published myki fare for the Station Pier trip, and no official source we could read confirms the berthing-fee figures, so neither appears here as a number.

Melbourne FAQ
Can I walk from the ship into Melbourne’s city centre?
Not comfortably. Most people walk about 560 m to the Beacon Cove tram stop, then ride tram route 109 (about 18 minutes) or the cruise-day Bus 109 (about 15).
Both need a myki card, and the pier itself is open only to ticketed passengers and authorised staff on ship days.
Did cruise lines really pull out of Melbourne?
You may have read so, but we couldn’t confirm the berthing-fee figures, or any withdrawal, from a government or port-authority source.
Ports Victoria’s 2026-27 schedule, valid as of 12 August 2026, still lists Princess partial turnarounds on six dates and Carnival Adventure homeporting in March and April 2027. Confirm your own sailing with your line.
Is the Great Ocean Road doable in a single cruise port call?
Only just, and only on a ship that sails late. Tourism Australia puts the Twelve Apostles about 240 km and 4.5 scenic-drive hours from Melbourne.
We didn’t confirm operator timings, so get the tour’s return time and compare it with your all-aboard before you pay.
Can I fit the Phillip Island Penguin Parade into a Melbourne port call?
Only if your ship sails late. The parade is an evening event, and we didn’t confirm tour return times.
Ask your line for the all-aboard time first, and book the tour second.
How much does the transfer from Station Pier cost?
It’s a myki fare on the tram or the bus. We found no published dollar figure for the trip, so we won’t guess.
Buy a card at the desk in the International Cruise Ship Terminal, or use mobile myki on Android through Google Wallet.
Is a fee dispute still affecting Melbourne cruise calls?
We couldn’t confirm one from a government or port-authority source, so we can’t say it’s current or resolved.
What we can confirm is the schedule. If your sailing is on it, ask your line whether anything has changed.
What can I do in Melbourne for free?
Hosier Lane’s street art, the Block and Royal Arcades, the Yarra River promenade and a browse through Queen Victoria Market cost nothing.
The ride from Station Pier is a paid myki trip, not a free one. We couldn’t confirm the CBD free tram zone is still running.
How many cruise ships can Station Pier handle at once?
We can’t say exactly. Ports Victoria’s 2026-27 schedule uses three berth codes (Outer West, Outer East and Inner West), while a state factsheet counts two active shipping berths. Your cruise documents say which one your ship uses.
