Getting There · Melbourne

Nearest Airport to the Melbourne Cruise Port

Melbourne has one airport that matters for a cruise, at Tullamarine, north-west of the city, and the pier is on the opposite side of town. Melbourne Airport is about 16.5 road miles (26.5 km) from Station Pier by our routing, roughly 27 minutes with no traffic. There is no train, and SkyBus ends at Southern Cross, not at the pier.

The short answer

Fly into Melbourne Airport. Our routing puts it about 16.5 miles (26.5 km) and 27 minutes from Station Pier with no traffic.

We print no taxi fare to the pier, because two official tariffs disagree. The airport only calls a taxi to the city about a 30-minute fare. SkyBus runs to Southern Cross Station for A$25.90 (about US$18) one way and A$43.40 (about US$30) return on its fares page, while its home page prints A$21.70 (about US$15), half the return fare. It doesn’t go to the pier, and there’s no train.

Station Pier is the only cruise terminal. From the city, Transport Victoria names tram 109 and a cruise-day bus 109 shuttle for the last stretch.

Take SkyBus and a tram if

  • You’ve a light bag each and time before check-in
  • You’re happy to change at Southern Cross
  • You’ve checked the tram stops on the day

Take a taxi or rideshare if

  • You land the morning you sail
  • Three or four of you share the fare
  • You’d rather not change with cases

The Season

Station Pier, and a season that opens on 11 October

Ships dock at Station Pier, 6 Waterfront Place in Port Melbourne, and Ports Victoria runs the passenger information.

As we read it on October 6, 2026, the 2026-27 schedule runs from Crown Princess on 11 October 2026 to Norwegian Spirit on 20 April 2027. Most entries are transit calls: a day in port, not the start of a cruise.

These are the ones it marks as turnarounds.

Ports Victoria publishes no boarding window, and we found no line’s cut-off for Melbourne.

Only ticketed passengers and authorised staff are on the pier on cruise days. Disembarking passengers leave through the Gatehouse and can be met in Waterfront Place, while private vehicles wait in the car park at the pier entrance.

No hotel we read sells a cruise package or a ride to the ship — so the transport is yours to plan.

The Map

The Ride

What the airport run costs, and what no page will tell you

We found no published fare from the airport to Station Pier. The rows below are SkyBus, which goes to Southern Cross, and the airport’s own rideshare charge, which isn’t the fare.

Travelers
SkyBus to Southern Cross, one way, per adult (its fares page)—
SkyBus to Southern Cross, return, per adult (its fares page)—
SkyBus, one way, as its home page prints it (half the return fare; confirm before you budget on it)—
Rideshare: the airport's charge only, per trip (not the fare)—

In Australian dollars as printed on October 6, 2026. SkyBus prints a child fare of A$6.60 (about US$5) one way and a senior fare of A$20.70 (about US$14) — those aren’t in the table.

The rideshare charge includes GST and may be passed on to you.

We didn’t read an airport rental page here — the Melbourne cruise-port rental guide covers pick-up and drop-off.

Sail-Day Landing

Cutting it fine: a flight into sailing morning

No line we read prints a cut-off for Melbourne — so the row below is our own margin, not a rule.

  • Our margin: land at least 5 hours before the ship leavesOur own rule of thumb, not a line's — we found no cut-off from any line for Melbourne.—

Your cruise documents set the boarding window. I’d still land the day before: one late bag on a morning arrival and the margin is gone.

A night in Melbourne first

Land a day early and let the morning be a short taxi.

Nineteen Melbourne hotels made our list, from Port Melbourne out to Tullamarine. Give us your flight and your ship, and we’ll match a night to your landing time.

Find my three picks
Coming Home

Off the ship, onto a flight

Nobody we read publishes a Melbourne disembarkation time, and Ports Victoria gives no boarding window to work back from.

By our routing the drive back to Tullamarine is about 27 minutes with no traffic. Put in your flight time and when you expect to be ashore, and the planner works out the ride and the wait.

Partner links (transfers, luggage storage) may earn Seabound Journeys a commission at no extra cost to you. They don't change the plan, which is built only from what each company publishes.

Taxis and Trams

The taxi tariffs, the pick-up hub and the tram

Two official tariffs disagree, so we print no fare. The Essential Services Commission’s page, effective 23 September 2025, lists a day flagfall of A$5.25 (about US$4) and A$2.037 (about US$1.42) a kilometre on the time-or-distance structure.

Safe Transport Victoria lists a schedule effective 1 July 2026, with flagfalls from A$5.25 to A$8.00 (about US$4–6) across its two fare structures and an A$1.25 (about US$0.87) levy on every trip that starts in Victoria.

Tolls and airport fees are passed through on top — and the drive itself is about 26 to 28 km, as the map card above shows.

Since 6 October 2026, private pick-up and drop-off at the airport has been at the new T123 Transport Hub, off Exit 19 of the Tullamarine Freeway, while SkyBus, taxis and rideshare use the old forecourt. The airport’s page prints an A$4.48 (about US$3) rideshare charge that may predate the change — so check it on the day.

Ports Victoria sets a taxi rank on the pier on cruise-ship visit days.

Transport Victoria’s page lists tram 109 from stop 129, a 560 m walk from the pier, about 18 minutes to the city, every 5 to 6 minutes at weekday peaks. A cruise-day bus 109 shuttle runs from the pier from 8 am to 5 pm, about 15 minutes to the city.

Both need a myki, sold at the ticket booth in the terminal. We found no fare, and there’s no luggage storage on the pier.

The lines and the season are on our Melbourne cruise guide — the pier’s own spaces are on Melbourne cruise parking.

Fly In Early

The case for a night in the city first

Landing the day before takes the clock off sailing morning. After a long flight you’ll want a bed first and a short taxi ride on the day.

None of our nineteen states a ride to the pier. Five are at the airport, which suits a late landing and does nothing for the ship: the drive from them to the pier is 14.1 to 16.5 road miles by our routing.

Pre-cruise hotels

The top six, and how far each is from Tullamarine

Scores are out of 100 and rest on what each hotel states about distance to Station Pier, an evening to enjoy and a walk to the ship. No hotel states a ride to the pier — so even the top score is only 45. Below are the top six with the drive from Melbourne Airport to each, by our routing — all nineteen are on the hotels page.

FAQ

Airport questions we get about Melbourne sailings

Which airport do I fly into for Station Pier?

Melbourne Airport (MEL) at Tullamarine.

Our main routing is 16.5 road miles (26.5 km) and 27 minutes with no traffic. The 28.3 km, 34-minute run is the one our guide and rental pages use, so read the drive as roughly 26 to 28 km.

What will a taxi from Tullamarine to Station Pier cost?

We can't give you a fare. The airport says a taxi to the city is about a 30-minute fare and prints no price to the pier.

The two tariffs are set out in the taxi section above: the regulator’s page from 23 September 2025 and Safe Transport Victoria’s schedule effective 1 July 2026.

We can’t say which governs, so we print neither as the current tariff.

What does SkyBus cost, and does it reach the pier?

SkyBus’s fares page and its home page disagree on the one-way fare: A$25.90 against A$21.70, which is exactly half the A$43.40 return. We haven’t confirmed why, so budget on the one-way fare.

It runs to Southern Cross Station, not Station Pier — so you then need a tram, a taxi or a rideshare.

The airport says buses run every 10 minutes around the clock — SkyBus says 4 am to 1 am.

Can I take a train from Melbourne Airport?

No. The airport's own page says a train isn't yet an option and suggests other ways in. SkyBus, taxis and rideshare are what we found.

Where do I find an Uber at Melbourne Airport now?

Since 6 October 2026, private pick-up and drop-off is at the T123 Transport Hub, off Exit 19, while rideshare still uses the old forecourt with SkyBus and taxis. The airport’s A$4.48 charge per trip, including GST, may be passed on to you.

We found no fare to the pier.

Does a cruise shuttle run from the airport to the ship?

None that we found. Ports Victoria names SkyBus as the airport link and says nothing about a pier service, and the airport hotels run shuttles to the terminals, not to the ship.

Getting from the city to the pier: what’s the move?

Take tram 109 from stop 129 at Beacon Cove, a 560 m walk from the pier, or the cruise-day bus 109 shuttle. Both need a myki — the times are in the taxi and tram section above.

We didn't verify a combined route from Southern Cross — so check the tram stops on the day.

How early should I land before a Melbourne sailing?

No cut-off turned up in our reading, from a line or from the port.

Our own margin is to land at least 5 hours before the ship leaves, and the day before is better. The schedule shows Carnival Adventure's homeport sailings arriving 07:00 to 08:00 and leaving at 16:00.

Is there anywhere to leave bags at Station Pier?

No. Ports Victoria lists no luggage storage on Station Pier and doesn't allow unattended luggage. We didn't research bag-delivery services, so we name none.

Is Station Pier my terminal?

Yes, if your cruise starts in Melbourne: it’s the only cruise terminal, at 6 Waterfront Place in Port Melbourne.

The season’s dates and turnarounds are in the pier section above. Your cruise documents name your terminal and your boarding window.

Do I fill in a passenger card if I fly in and sail out?

The Australian Border Force says the incoming passenger card applies to ship arrivals as well as flights, and the card asks for a flight number or the name of the ship. Check your own visa or eTA requirements with the Department of Home Affairs — we didn't read the primary text.

Where are the rental counters at Melbourne Airport?

We didn't read an airport rental page for this one. Our Melbourne cruise-port rental guide covers pick-up and drop-off, and Ports Victoria says limited charged parking is available in Waterfront Place.

Not sailing from Melbourne? Sydney (splurge picks, airport) and Brisbane (splurge picks, airport) each have their own night-before ranking, at Sydney and Brisbane. The wider trip is on Australia and New Zealand cruises.
