Nearest Airport to the Sydney Cruise Port

Sydney has one airport that matters for a cruise, at Mascot, south of the city. It's about 9.1 road miles (14.6 km) from the Overseas Passenger Terminal by our routing, roughly 20 minutes with no traffic, and 6.3 miles from White Bay Cruise Terminal. The train goes to Circular Quay, and a taxi has a fixed fare to the CBD.

The short answer

Fly into Sydney Airport, then check which pier you’re sailing from. Our routing puts the airport about 9.1 miles (14.6 km) and 20 minutes from the Overseas Passenger Terminal with no traffic, and 6.3 miles (14 minutes) from White Bay.

Taxi money is where the sources fight. Transport NSW prints a fixed A$60 (about US$40) fare between the airport and the CBD, dated from 3 November 2025 — and we couldn’t confirm that a cruise terminal counts as the CBD.

The airport’s own page says about A$45 to A$55 (about US$30–40).

Holland America says about A$80 (about US$55) to the terminals.

We haven’t resolved the three, so budget for the top figure.

The train to Circular Quay adds a station access fee — which is A$18.61 (about US$13) on one Transport NSW page and A$17.92 (about US$13) in a 2026 brochure, plus an Opal fare we haven’t confirmed. Which pier is yours depends on the ship and the day.

The table below shows the Port Authority’s October schedule.

The train suits you if

  • There are two of you, or one, and each has a single case
  • Your boarding document names the Overseas Passenger Terminal, and Circular Quay is the stop
  • You don’t mind paying a fee plus a fare we couldn’t pin down

A taxi suits you if

  • You land the same morning you sail
  • Three or four of you split the fare
  • White Bay is your pier, and its page lists no train, bus or ferry route

Which Terminal

Check the pier before the flight

Sydney has two cruise terminals, and one ship, Carnival Adventure, uses both in the same month. The table comes from the Port Authority’s schedule page and each line’s own wording, read October 6, 2026. We read page one of a schedule that runs to 2031, and it can change, so check yours.

The Overseas Passenger Terminal is on the corner of Argyle and George Streets at Circular Quay West. It has an elevated gangway and a taxi rank, and there’s no parking on cruise days.

White Bay Cruise Terminal is on James Craig Road in Rozelle, with berths 4 and 5 and parts of berths 3 and 6.

On cruise days its vehicle access is by James Craig Road and The Crescent only.

No hotel we read sells a cruise package or a ride to the ship, and we found no line’s priced airport transfer for Sydney, so the last leg is yours to plan.

The Map

Mascot is south, the ships are north

Sydney Airport sits at Mascot, south of the city. The Overseas Passenger Terminal is at Circular Quay West, on the harbour in The Rocks, and White Bay is at Rozelle, west of the CBD. By our routing the road is shorter to White Bay, 10.1 km against 14.6 km.

The Ride

Four taxi figures, no agreement

The taxi rows are per car. They show the airport’s own range, Transport NSW’s fixed fare to the CBD and Holland America’s figure to the terminals. There’s no train row, because the access fee conflicts and we couldn’t confirm the Opal fare.

One way, in Australian dollars, as printed between October 2025 and October 2026. The fixed A$60 fare is a trial dated from 3 November 2025 and may not cover a cruise terminal. The other figures are the airport’s and Holland America’s own estimates, and they conflict.

Discover Cars’ Sydney page showed economy cars from A$20.36 (about US$14) a day on October 6, 2026. That’s in Australian dollars and it moves with dates, and many offers use a free shuttle from the airport. Drive on the left.

Sail-Day Landing

Landing the morning you sail

The Port Authority says to be at either terminal at least an hour before departure. No line we read prints a flight cut-off for Sydney — so both rows below are our margins, not rules.

  • Port Authority's arrival rule, plus our marginThe Port Authority says be at the terminal at least an hour before departure. Our arithmetic adds about 90 minutes from landing to the kerb and a 35-minute ride, a little over three hours in all. We round it up: land at least 3.5 hours before the ship leaves.—
  • Train or taxi, with time to spareOur rule of thumb, not a line's: land at least 5 hours before the ship leaves.—

Your cruise documents set your check-in time, and the Port Authority recommends online check-in. Bag drop opens at about 9 am. I’d land the day before. A morning landing leaves no room for a delayed bag.

Coming Home

Disembarkation morning, Mascot-bound

No line we read publishes a disembarkation time for Sydney. Holland America warns that taxi waits at the Overseas Passenger Terminal on disembarkation morning may reach an hour, and that the pier has no luggage storage. Enter your flight time and when you expect to be ashore, and the planner works out the ride to the airport and how long you’ll wait at the gate.

Partner links (rental cars) may earn Seabound Journeys a commission at no extra cost to you. They don't change the plan, which is built only from what each company publishes.

Taxis and Trains

What the meter, the rail fee and the shuttle add up to

Transport NSW’s rank-and-hail tariff has a hire charge of A$5.17 (about US$4) and A$2.61 (about US$2) a kilometre for the first 12 km, then A$2.37 (about US$2) a kilometre. The night rate, 10 pm to 6 am, is A$3.10 (about US$2) and A$2.82 (about US$2).

A peak surcharge of A$2.65 (about US$2), a waiting charge of A$67.78 (about US$45) an hour and a passenger service levy of A$1.20 (about US$0.84), which the page gives as A$1.32 (about US$0.92) with GST, are added, along with tolls.

Sydney Airport to the CBD has a fixed fare, A$60 for a standard taxi and A$80 for a maxi taxi of five or more, from 3 November 2025.

The Airport Link serves the city from the airport stations. Two sources disagree on the station access fee, A$18.61 against A$17.92 — which is why the table above has no train row.

We haven’t confirmed Opal fares either: the tables we found are from July 2025, and Transport NSW says fares changed again from 29 June 2026.

From Circular Quay the Overseas Passenger Terminal is the nearest stop — and the Port Authority gives Wynyard as about ten minutes on foot.

Sydney Airport’s page lists DART Express transfers from Terminal 1 to Central, Hyde Park, Kings Cross, Darling Harbour and The Rocks, with no price in what we read.

On bags, Bounce storage sits near the Overseas Passenger Terminal, not at White Bay, per the Port Authority.

The terminals and lines are in our Sydney cruise guide, the garages in Sydney cruise parking, and the port itself on its own page.

Fly In Early

One night in the city first

A night in the city first means sailing morning starts with breakfast, not a flight. After a long haul you’ll want a bed first and a short taxi to the ship the next day.

None of our eighteen runs a shuttle to the ship. We researched no hotel at the airport, so every hotel here is a city night, between 7.2 and 9.6 road miles from Mascot by our routing.

Pre-cruise hotels

Six hotels, ranked by what they print

Here are the top six and the drive to each from Sydney Airport, by our routing. Scores are out of 100 and rest on what each hotel prints about rides, stations and the distance to the ship.

No hotel publishes a ship shuttle — so even the top score is only 62.

FAQ

Airport questions, from the sources

What is the closest airport to the Sydney cruise port?

Sydney Airport (SYD), at Mascot, south of the city. By our routing the drive is about 14.6 km to the Overseas Passenger Terminal and 10.1 km to White Bay Cruise Terminal, with the times on the map card above.

The lines give longer times than our routing: Holland America says about 30 minutes to either terminal, and Royal Caribbean about 35 minutes to the Overseas Passenger Terminal and 25 to White Bay.

How much is a taxi from Sydney Airport to the cruise terminal?

We can't give you one number. Transport NSW prints a fixed fare of A$60 between the airport and the CBD for a standard taxi, A$80 for a maxi taxi of five or more, dated from 3 November 2025 — and a terminal may fall outside the CBD fare.

The airport’s page and Holland America give two more figures, both in the table above, and we haven’t resolved the three.

Ask the driver at the rank whether the fixed fare covers your terminal.

What does a Sydney taxi meter charge?

The rank-and-hail tariff on Transport NSW’s page has a hire charge of A$5.17 and A$2.61 a kilometre for the first 12 km, then A$2.37, with a night rate, a peak surcharge, a passenger service levy and tolls on top. We read it on a page Transport NSW last changed on 1 June 2026.

Can I take the train from Sydney Airport to the cruise ship?

Yes, as far as Circular Quay or Wynyard. The Port Authority names Circular Quay as the train stop for the Overseas Passenger Terminal, with Wynyard about ten minutes on foot from it, and the Airport Link takes about 13 minutes from the city, roughly every ten minutes from 5 am to midnight.

White Bay's page lists no train, bus or ferry route, so we can't name one.

How much is the airport train station access fee?

Two sources disagree. Transport NSW’s Getting to and from Sydney Airport page gives A$18.61 for an adult trip, with a weekly cap of A$37.75 (about US$25), while a 2026 fares brochure that looks like an older edition gives A$17.92.

Both are unconfirmed, so check before you rely on either.

The fee is on top of the normal Opal fare.

How much is an Opal fare from the airport to Circular Quay?

We haven't confirmed it — so we print no Opal fare as current. The tables we found date from July 2025, and fares changed again on 29 June 2026, per Transport NSW.

Is there a cruise shuttle from Sydney Airport?

None that we read. The DART Express transfers on Sydney Airport's page go to city districts rather than a terminal, and we didn't read a price.

If your line sells a transfer, ask it for the price; we found none for Sydney.

Do Uber and other rideshares work at Sydney Airport?

Rideshare is listed with taxis on the airport’s page at about A$45 to A$55 one way to the CBD. No app’s fare page was read, so we price no terminal run.

Which Sydney cruise terminal will my ship use?

It depends on the ship and the day. On the Port Authority’s October 2026 schedule, Carnival Adventure uses the Overseas Passenger Terminal on 8 October and White Bay on 12 October, so we pair no line with a terminal.

Your cruise documents name yours.

How early should I land for a Sydney cruise?

The Port Authority says to arrive at the terminal at least an hour before departure, and bag drop opens at about 9 am. That's the terminal's rule, not a flight plan.

We'd land the day before, or at least five hours ahead. That's our rule of thumb.

Can I leave bags near the cruise terminal?

Bounce offers storage near the Overseas Passenger Terminal, per the Port Authority, and bags can generally be dropped from about 9 am until about 90 minutes before departure. White Bay has no storage at or beside the terminal, and its bag drop closes an hour before departure.

Holland America warns there's no storage at the pier.

We found no Bounce price.

Where are the rental cars at Sydney Airport?

Sixt has a counter in the arrivals halls, opposite the baggage carousels at Terminals 2 and 3 and between gates A and B at Terminal 1. Europcar collects near the car parks.

Discover Cars showed economy cars from A$20.36 a day on October 6, 2026, a snapshot that moves with dates.

Drive on the left, and know that there’s no parking at the Overseas Passenger Terminal on cruise days, per the Port Authority.

Not sailing from Sydney? Brisbane has its hotel ranking, splurge list and airport page, and Melbourne has the same three: hotels, splurge and airport. The circuit around them is in Australia and New Zealand Cruises, Decoded, and the port itself is on the Sydney cruise port page.
