Phuket

Phuket is two ports wearing one name, and your ship decides which one you get. Tender into Patong Bay and the beach starts at the jetty. Dock at Ao Makham and nothing is within walking distance at all.

Phuket in brief

Phuket is Thailand's largest island, and for cruise purposes it has no single berth.

Princess Cruises says it plainly on its own Phuket page. Depending on your ship, you'll either tender into Patong Bay or dock at the deep sea port at Ao Makham.

Those aren't variations on a theme. They're opposite sides of the island, roughly 22 kilometres apart, and they produce port days with almost nothing in common.

The pattern behind the split is seasonal, and it's reported consistently rather than published officially.

Through the November–April high season, when the Andaman side is calm, ships anchor off Patong Bay and run tenders ashore — about 1.5 kilometres of water, roughly 10 to 15 minutes each way.

Through the May–October southwest monsoon, when Patong Bay is exposed, ships use the sheltered east-coast port at Ao Makham instead. Larger ships may take Ao Makham year-round regardless.

CruiseMapper, whatsinport.com, Shore Excursions Asia, about2cruise and Cruise Crocodile all describe it that way.

No port-authority document confirming it was reachable in this pass, so treat that seasonal pattern as strong secondary sourcing, not gospel.

Even the tender landing itself isn't agreed on.

Cruise Crocodile and whatsinport.com both put it at the jetty by The Bliss South Beach Patong hotel. about2cruise names the Sunset Beach Resort jetty. CruiseMapper says Patong's jetty or Kalim Beach, depending on sea conditions that day.

All three sit on the same few kilometres of Patong shoreline, so the practical answer doesn't move much.

Confirm yours with the ship rather than a guide, this one included.

This page covers the berth and the paperwork — which arrival you're getting, what each one puts within reach, and what Thailand's entry rules currently require.

The paid tours, and the timing problem that makes several of them a poor fit for a Phuket call, live in our Phuket shore excursion guide instead.

On foot from the ship

The single best thing about the Patong arrival. Sand, 7-Elevens and ATMs are all right at the landing — no vehicle, no plan, no spend.

About 1.5 km of water each way. Build the queue into your return time too, not just the crossing — ships' own tours routinely load first.

Nothing Walkable

Cruise-port.com puts it flatly: there is no walk-off into a town centre here. Phuket Old Town sits about 8 km north, Patong about 22 km west.

~20–45 Min · Road

Sources disagree on this one. Cruise Crocodile says 15 km and 20–30 minutes; Shore Excursions Asia says 30–45. Budget the longer figure and you'll never be caught out.

A Patong tender day needs no plan at all — walk off, turn left, and the beach is there. An Ao Makham day needs a vehicle before it needs anything else.

Most Phuket calls sit on a Southeast Asia loop out of Singapore — see the Singapore departure port guide for terminals, transfers and the SG Arrival Card. If your sailing turns around at Hong Kong instead, that city has its own departure port guide. And if it starts or ends in Japan, that end is now covered too — the Tokyo/Yokohama embarkation guide, with Tokyo/Yokohama cruise parking if you're driving to the ship.

Practical notes

Current as of September 18, 2026 Review periodically

The visa rule is genuinely mid-change, and we're not going to resolve it for you.

Thailand's Ministry of Interior published four announcements in the Royal Thai Government Gazette on August 31, 2026 — cited by Siam Legal as Vol. 143, Special Issue 207 Ngor.

They cut the visa exemption for 60 nationalities including the United States from 60 days to 30, tourism only, with effect from September 15, 2026. Several immigration practices report it as in force.

The U.S. State Department's own Thailand page, read September 18, 2026, still says a visa is required only "if your stay is more than 60 days, although the government may soon reduce this to 30 days."

So the Thai instrument says 30 and Washington's own advice to Americans still says 60.

Confirm with the Royal Thai Embassy or your cruise line before you sail. Treat any guide that hands you one clean number — this one included — as out of date the moment it's written.

For a day call, none of this bites. A port day is hours, not weeks, so 30 versus 60 changes nothing about stepping ashore at Patong.

It bites if you're tacking a Thailand stay onto either end of the cruise, and that's where people get caught.

If you are, the 30-day entry can reportedly be extended once by up to 30 more days at an immigration office for a 1,900 baht fee, at the officer's discretion. That's Siam Legal's reading of the new announcements, not a guarantee.

Passports need six months' validity beyond your arrival date, per the State Department.

Thailand separately requires the Thailand Digital Arrival Card from every foreign national entering by air, land or sea — filed free at tdac.immigration.go.th within the three days before arrival.

The Immigration Bureau's own FAQ exempts only transit passengers who never clear immigration. It doesn't address a cruise day-call at all.

We could not confirm whether lines file the card in bulk for you or expect you to file your own. Ask your line directly — that's a real gap, not a formality.

Money is baht, and U.S. dollars are widely not accepted here.

Fares run high at the pier and drop sharply on an app. Patong to Phuket Old Town runs 500–600 baht as a fixed taxi fare against 300–400 baht on Grab or Bolt, per Eve Phuket.

Phuket Travel Experience prices that same Grab ride at 400–550 baht, so the app number isn't fixed either. Tuk-tuks inside Patong run around 200 baht even for short hops.

From Ao Makham, cruise-port.com lists 250–450 baht by Grab, 400–700 by metered taxi and 600–1,200 by tuk-tuk for the same 20-minute run into Phuket Town.

It also lists a cruise-line shuttle at roughly US$15–25 return. That shuttle figure is one source only — price it against the app before you buy it.

At roughly 33 baht to the dollar, the Federal Reserve H.10 rate for September 11, 2026, 500 baht is about US$15 and 1,000 baht about US$30.

No published per-day passenger cap, tender-cancellation record, or 2026-27 season call total for Phuket was found in this pass.

Patong Bay is an open roadstead, so rough-weather tendering is a live risk in principle.

But we found no documented pattern of Phuket calls being dropped for it, and we won't imply one. Treat a marginal-weather tender day as possible and unquantified.

Phuket FAQ

Does Phuket tender, or do ships dock?

Both — your ship decides. Princess says on its own Phuket page that depending on the ship you'll either tender into Patong Bay or dock at the deep sea port at Ao Makham. The widely reported pattern is tendering at Patong through the November–April high season and docking at Ao Makham through the monsoon, with larger ships taking Ao Makham year-round.

Where exactly do the tenders land at Patong?

Sources genuinely disagree. Cruise Crocodile and whatsinport.com name the jetty by The Bliss South Beach Patong hotel, about2cruise names the Sunset Beach Resort jetty, and CruiseMapper says Patong's jetty or Kalim Beach depending on the sea. They're all on the same stretch of shoreline — confirm yours with the ship.

Can I walk anywhere from the ship in Phuket?

From the Patong tender landing, yes. The beach, convenience stores and ATMs are right there, which makes this the easiest free port day on the circuit. From Ao Makham, no — cruise-port.com says there's no walk-off into a town centre, with Phuket Old Town about 8 km off and Patong about 22.

How long is the tender ride at Patong?

About 1.5 km of water, roughly 10 to 15 minutes each way. The crossing isn't what costs you time — the queue is, in both directions, and ships' own excursions typically load ahead of independent passengers.

Do I need a visa for Thailand as a U.S. citizen on a cruise call?

Not for a day ashore. The length of the visa-free stay is mid-change, though, and worth getting right if you're extending the trip. Thai announcements published in the Royal Gazette on August 31, 2026 cut the exemption from 60 days to 30 with effect from September 15 — but the U.S. State Department's own Thailand page still said 60 when we read it on September 18, 2026. Confirm directly with the Royal Thai Embassy or your line.

What is the Thailand Digital Arrival Card, and do cruise passengers file one?

It's a free online arrival form, filed at tdac.immigration.go.th within three days of arrival. The Immigration Bureau says every foreign national entering by air, land or sea needs one, exempting only transit passengers who never clear immigration. What it doesn't address is a cruise day-call — ask your line whether they file it for you, and don't assume.

What should a taxi cost from the port?

Ask the app before you ask the driver. Patong to Phuket Old Town runs 500–600 baht as a fixed taxi fare against 300–400 baht on Grab or Bolt per Eve Phuket, though Phuket Travel Experience prices the same Grab ride at 400–550 baht. From Ao Makham, cruise-port.com lists 250–450 baht by Grab and 600–1,200 by tuk-tuk. At roughly 33 baht to the dollar, 500 baht is about US$15.

Is a Phang Nga Bay trip realistic on a Phuket port call?

Often not, and it's the most useful thing to know before you book here. The tour piers sit on the east coast, about 45 minutes to an hour from Patong by road before the boat even leaves, and operators publish full-day durations of roughly 6 to 10 hours. Phuket calls commonly run 7am or 8am to around 5pm. Our Phuket excursion guide works the timing through properly.
