In short

Where can I cruise in March?

Six ocean regions are at peak in March: the Caribbean, the Mexican Riviera, the Panama Canal, Asia, Australia & New Zealand and transatlantic crossings. Seven more are open — the Mediterranean, Bermuda, Northern Europe, Hawaii & South Pacific, South America & Antarctica, the Arctic & Norwegian Fjords and the Galápagos.

Asia is the region that changes most. Japan and the Hong Kong–China–Korea–Taiwan circuit join Singapore & Southeast Asia at peak, one of three months (April and November are the others) when all three Asian sub-areas line up — though the two northern ones are typical-season guidance, not verified dated sailings.

Two regions stay closed for one more month, Alaska and Canada & New England. On the rivers, the Mekong is at peak, the Danube, Rhine, Seine, Rhône, Douro, Nile and Columbia & Snake are open, and the Mississippi still has no verified season.

How to choose

Crossing, coast or river: choosing a March trip

First cruise: the Caribbean, still. March is the fourth month of its December–April peak. The departure-port list runs to 13, the port list to 41, and there is nothing to work around until hurricane season in June.

Crowd-wise, South America & Antarctica has just stepped down from peak — expedition ships still depart in March, and Rio and Buenos Aires coastal sailings run to April. The Galápagos is the second option: warm season, calmer seas, no busy stretch until mid-June.

A spring transatlantic is the trip that is specific to March. Crossings peak March to May between Fort Lauderdale, New York, Southampton, Barcelona and Lisbon, with the Azores and Madeira as the mid-ocean calls. It's a crossing, not a port-a-day cruise. Go for the sea days or don't go. For scenery instead, the Norwegian coast is in the last month of its northern-lights cruise window.

River cruising

Rivers in March

River cruising widens in March to eight rivers, the most since autumn. The Mekong is at peak for one more month, and the Danube, Rhine, Seine, Rhône, Douro and Columbia & Snake are all back — early, with the Seine's Giverny still shut.

Looking ahead

April opens the ocean map fully

April opens Alaska and Canada & New England, both with a handful of late-April starts before most ships begin in May. That puts every ocean region on our atlas in play for the first time all year.

The Seine and Rhône begin their prime windows — Giverny reopens and Tauck's Rhône season starts. Australia & New Zealand and the Mekong step down from peak, and nothing closes.

Quick answers

Cruising in March: questions

Where can I cruise in March?

In March the peak regions are the Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, Panama Canal, Asia, Australia & New Zealand and transatlantic crossings. The Mediterranean, Bermuda, Northern Europe, Hawaii & South Pacific, South America & Antarctica, the Arctic & Norwegian Fjords and the Galápagos are open, and eight rivers are sailing, led by the Mekong.

Is Canada & New England sailing in March?

No. Most sailings run May to October. A few run in late April and the first days of November. If you're in the Northeast, Bermuda's weekly round trips from Boston and New York start about April and are the nearer option.

Which rivers come back in March?

Six: the Danube, Rhine, Seine, Rhône, Douro and Columbia & Snake. All are early-season — Giverny is closed on the Seine until April, Tauck's Rhône season hasn't started, and the Danube's busy months are June to September. The Mekong is the river at peak.

Is March a good month for a first cruise?

Easily. The Caribbean is at peak with the most departure ports and ports of call of any region this month, and the Mexican Riviera is the West Coast version, also at peak. Either one is a straightforward week.

Which regions are quieter in March?

Open without peak this month: the Western Mediterranean, Bermuda, Northern Europe's winter loops, Hawaii & South Pacific, South America & Antarctica, the Norwegian coast and the Galápagos. South America & Antarctica is the standout — a month past peak, with expedition departures still running.

Can I cruise Japan in March?

It's the start of Japan's typical spring window, per our Asia guide, and the same is true for Hong Kong, China, Korea and Taiwan. We haven't verified dated sailings month by month, so treat it as typical-season guidance and confirm the departure before you plan around it.
