Punta Arenas sits on the Strait of Magellan, and two kinds of departure leave from it. Australis boards its expedition ships at Muelle Prat, the city pier, for four nights through the fjords of Tierra del Fuego to Ushuaia.
The air-cruises work differently. Antarctica21 and Quark meet you in town, then fly you from the airport to King George Island — about two hours, per both lines — where you board the ship. For you, the airport is the terminal, not the pier.
Muelle Prat belongs to Empresa Portuaria Austral (EPAustral), the state port company. Its Stage II works raised the longest ship the south berth takes from 258 m to 300 m, per MundoMarítimo and El Mostrador. Longer ships still anchor and tender, and even a ship under 300 m can be sent to anchor, so check your daily programme.
This page is for starting or ending a trip here. If your ship is only calling for the day, our Punta Arenas shore excursion picks cover the tender, the penguins and the town.
Entry is simple for Americans: travel.state.gov says no visa is needed for 90 days or less on a tourist passport. Your passport must be valid for the whole stay, with a blank page for each stamp. Chile sits at Level 2, exercise increased caution (August 19, 2026), and the same page warns that strikes can cause significant delays in remote places, Punta Arenas among them.
Who starts a trip here
Deployments change every season, so this roster is dated and sourced. Two kinds of departure start here, and they don’t share a terminal.
Lines we confirmed for 2026-27 include these, checked against each line’s own pages and brochures on October 18, 2026. Australis sails Ventus Australis and Stella Australis from Muelle Prat on the four-night Fjords of Tierra del Fuego, Punta Arenas to Ushuaia; its 2026-27 rate sheet lists Ventus departures from 21 September 2026 to 1 April 2027 and Stella departures from 19 September 2026 to 20 February 2027, from US$1,955 per person, a promotional category B rate, double occupancy. Emol reported the season opening on 12 September and closing in mid-April 2027, so dates at either end can shift. Antarctica21 flies its air-cruises to King George Island to meet Magellan Explorer and the new Magellan Discoverer, with two included hotel nights in town. Quark’s Antarctic Express: Fly the Drake on World Voyager has five 2026-27 departures from Punta Arenas, in December 2026 and February 2027. Antarctica21 also lists sea voyages that start at Explorers House and board in Punta Arenas; none was bookable when we checked. Atlas Ocean Voyages flies Drake Express guests between Punta Arenas and King George Island, with a hotel night before and after; its 7 December 2026 sailing is one. HX boards MS Fram at Punta Arenas after an included flight from Santiago, per travelhx.com. Agent listings show 2026-27 departures, such as an 18 December 2026 voyage that boards on the 19th and ends back in Punta Arenas on 9 January 2027 — confirm the date on travelhx.com. Silversea is moving the other way: from 2026 its Antarctica fly-cruise starts at its hotel in Puerto Williams, per Silversea, so Puerto Williams, not Punta Arenas, is the gateway for it.

Where you can go
From the pier, Australis sails one way through the fjords to Ushuaia; the Patagonian Explorer runs the route the other way. From the airport, the air-cruises skip the Drake Passage and land in the South Shetlands. One trip won’t cover all the cards below.
Destinations
Where a Punta Arenas voyage goes
The fjords by ship, the Peninsula by air, and one big day trip. Check your own itinerary.
Showing all 8
Fjords and Cape Horn
3Australis’s four nights to Ushuaia, weather permitting at every landing.
Tierra del Fuego fjords
Australis, 4 nights
Ainsworth Bay, Tuckers Islets, Pía Glacier and Glacier Alley, per Australis.
Cape Horn and Wulaia Bay
Day 4
A landing at Cape Horn National Park if the weather allows, then Wulaia Bay.
Antarctica, flying the Drake
3Antarctica21 and Quark fly from PUQ and board you at King George Island.
King George Island
South Shetlands
About two hours by charter from Punta Arenas, per Antarctica21 and Quark.
Patagonia and the region
2The park most people ask about, and the rest of the region.
Torres del Paine
Via Puerto Natales
About three hours by road to Natales, then about two more to the park entrance.
No destination matches that. Clear the filter to see all 8 again.
Torres del Paine before or after: Bus-Sur’s 2026-27 catalog puts Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales at about three hours fifteen minutes, from CLP 11,000 one way. Australis’s own blog adds about 2 to 2.5 hours from Natales to the Laguna Amarga entrance. That’s a long day each way, not a quick outing — sleep in Puerto Natales if you want time in the park.
The pier, or the airport
For Australis, the terminal is Muelle Prat, about 5 minutes by car or a 15-minute walk from the main square, per Australis. Check in there from 13:00 to 17:00, and boarding starts at 18:00, per Australis, which gives the address as Av. Costanera del Estrecho de Magallanes 1398. A January 2026 port-of-call blog describes a terminal building at the pier with check-in booths for expedition ships — a blogger’s account, not the port’s.
For the air-cruises, the pier doesn’t come into it. Antarctica21 checks you in at Explorers House, its center in town, before 2 pm on Day 1; Quark meets you at its starting hotel, with a briefing at 6 pm. On flight day both lines drive you to the airport, and the weather sets the hour.
| Quay | Where | What we know |
|---|---|---|
| Muelle Prat | Av. Costanera del Estrecho de Magallanes 1398, per Australis | Australis check-in 13:00 to 17:00, boarding 18:00 |
| The pier itself | Owned by EPAustral | Stage II lets ships up to 300 m berth; longer ships anchor and tender |
| Explorers House | Antarctica21’s center in town; no street address published | Check in before 2 pm on Day 1 for a mandatory briefing |
| PUQ airport | About 20 km north of the pier | Charter flights to King George Island, about two hours |
Send us your ship and sail date and we’ll tell you which quay and which night. Ask us ↓

Parking, in short
No cruise parking is published for Muelle Prat. Several hotels list parking for your stay — but none of the ones we checked says it covers the voyage.
Most trips here start with a flight anyway. If you’re driving in from Puerto Natales, ask the hotel before you count on leaving the car.
Getting here
The airport, PUQ, sits about 20 km north of town, and Australis puts it about 20 minutes from the pier by car. Domestic flights come in from Santiago and Puerto Montt; LATAM also flies to Stanley in the Falklands, per the airport’s Wikipedia entry.
| From | Taxi | Public transport |
|---|---|---|
| PUQ — airport to town | About CLP 10,000 to 13,000, per three unofficial guides. | No direct city bus. Shared vans run about CLP 5,000 to 6,000 per person; Bus-Sur’s Natales buses stop on request, per an unofficial guide. |
| PUQ — air-cruise guests | Not needed on Day 1 if your line meets you. | Antarctica21 and Quark include the group transfer from the airport, and back out for the charter. |
| Town — to Muelle Prat | A short taxi from downtown; Australis says taxis are easy to find. | Public buses stop within walking distance of the pier, per Australis. |
No fare is published by the airport or an operator that we could find; the figures above come from unofficial guides. Visa rules are covered above. Punta Arenas Airport to the ship has the rest.
The night before, ranked: we’ve scored eleven hotels for the night before a Punta Arenas departure, from the casino hotel on the Strait to the heritage rooms on the square, on what each one or its brand publishes, plus our own distances to Muelle Prat — facts from listings are shown but earn no points. Five worth knowing:
| Hotel | Where | One thing to know |
|---|---|---|
| Dreams | O’Higgins, on the Strait | No. 1: pools, a spa and two restaurants, and the hotel prints a 5-minute walk to the port. |
| Cabo de Hornos | Plaza Muñoz Gamero | Breakfast in every stay, on the square; Antarctica21 names it, or similar, for its included nights. |
| Los Navegantes | José Menéndez, downtown | No. 3: breakfast in every rate, per its rates page, and Bautista Restaurant downstairs. |
| José Nogueira | Bories, on the main square | The heritage splurge: 22 rooms, breakfast listed as included, dinner at The Endurance. |
| Isla Rey Jorge | 21 de Mayo, toward the port | About 400 m from Muelle Prat by our map; its breakfast comes from a listing. |
