Puerto Williams in brief
Start with the size of the place, because it shapes everything else.
Chile’s 2024 census counted about 1,750 people in the whole Cabo de Hornos commune, and Puerto Williams is most of them. Ushuaia, across the channel, has roughly 80,000 — more than forty times as many.
So this isn’t a smaller Ushuaia. It’s a navy settlement with a hospital, schools, a court and a museum, and very little built for crowds.
That’s also the root of the “southernmost city” argument — a fight over definitions, not geography.
In 2019 Chile’s statistics institute, the INE, changed its definition of a city to include provincial capitals of any size. Puerto Williams is the capital of the Antártica Chilena province, so it qualified — and Chilean media declared it the world’s southernmost city, a title Ushuaia had long used.
Argentina hasn’t conceded the point in any official way we found — though some Argentine media accepted it in 2019. President Boric revived it on social media in July 2025, and Argentine critics answered that a town that size is an administrative settlement, not a city.
Our position is simple. Neither claim changes your day ashore.
The pier is the bigger story for cruise passengers.
Chile’s Ministry of Public Works began a multipurpose pier here in 2021. Its first phase included a 130-metre berthing head, and industry reporting in April 2025 said the dock had already handled more than 30 cruise ships that year.
Stage 2 passed 55 percent complete in August 2026 and is scheduled to finish around February 2027, with service entry planned for March 2027. A later stage adds the terminal building and migration offices.
Until that lands, treat the shoreside setup as provisional — your line’s embarkation notes beat any general guide, this one included.
Who uses it? Silversea, mostly — at least on the lines we could confirm.
Silversea announced Antarctic departures from Puerto Williams starting in November 2021, and it lists round-trip Antarctica voyages from here on its own site for the 2026-27 season. A third-party port schedule also shows an HX expedition ship in late October 2026, which HX’s own pages didn’t confirm when we checked.
If you’re on a mainstream ship sailing past Cape Horn, you’re unlikely to see Puerto Williams at all. Check your itinerary before you plan around it.
On foot around the pier and town
Built in the pier’s first phase, per the Ministry of Public Works project description. Industry reporting says it had hosted more than 30 cruise ships by April 2025.
MundoMarítimo reported Stage 2 at more than 55 percent done in August 2026, with service entry planned for March 2027. Expect construction this season.
Ships over 300 m can’t use it, and taller vessels must work around flights at the nearby aerodrome. Expedition ships sit well under that limit.
We found no official walking distance or time from the pier to the centre. The town is small, but ask your line whether it runs transfers before assuming you’ll walk.
Home to descendants of the Yagán people and the Kipa-Ákar craft centre. Sources put it between about 1 km and 2 km from Puerto Williams.
The park’s university partner gives about 3 km; one tour operator lists 5 km. Either way, it’s a drive or a long walk, not a stroll.
What's nearby, broadly
Most of that list sits in or close to town. The museum is walkable from anywhere in Puerto Williams, per Chile’s tourism board, and the Micalvi — a former supply ship now used as a yacht club — sits at the western end of the harbour.
Omora park and the Cerro Bandera trailhead take longer to reach. The Dientes de Navarino circuit is roughly 40 km over four or five days, so it belongs on a trekking holiday, not a cruise schedule.
Commonly reached from
Puerto Williams works mainly as an Antarctic departure point. Silversea runs round-trip expedition voyages from here, and some Silver Cloud sailings start here and head north through the Chilean fjords — one 2027 listing calls at Ushuaia the next morning. Silversea’s Antarctica Fly Cruise guests overnight here before flying across the Drake Passage instead of sailing it — a programme the line ran from Punta Arenas for its 2025 voyages and moves to Puerto Williams for voyages from 2026, per its own site. Independent travellers usually arrive on DAP’s small planes from Punta Arenas, about 1¼ to 1½ hours, or by a ferry of about 30 to 33 hours. Our Puerto Williams embarkation guide covers flights, Silversea’s set-up and where to stay the night before. For the region’s full map, see our South America & Antarctica cruises guide; if your sailing leaves from the other side of the channel, our Ushuaia embarkation guide covers it.
Planning your Puerto Williams day
Honest expectations first: Puerto Williams has a handful of things to do, not dozens. That’s the appeal for some travellers, and a letdown for others.
The museum, the Yagán heritage at Villa Ukika, the Cerro Bandera climb and Omora park cover most of a short stay. Our excursion guide sorts out which ones need a guide and which you can manage alone.
Booking something yourself? Our comparison of Shore Excursions Group and Viator explains how the two platforms differ — though in a town this size, check that either one lists anything before you count on it.

Carry Chilean pesos — that’s the one money rule that matters here.
The currency is the Chilean peso (CLP). The U.S. State Department says cards are widely used in Chile, but Chile’s own tourism board advises bringing cash to Puerto Williams because not every business takes cards. Trust the local advice, not the national one.
U.S. citizens don’t need a visa for stays of 90 days or less, per the State Department. You get a tourist card on arrival and hand it back when you leave.
The State Department rates Chile Level 2, “Exercise increased caution,” as of its August 19, 2026 update. Its concerns are petty crime, demonstrations and a hantavirus health notice — the advisory doesn’t single out Navarino Island.
Emergency numbers are 131 for an ambulance, 133 for police and 132 for fire.
Plugs are types C and L, at 220 V and 50 Hz.
No published taxi fares turned up for Puerto Williams, and no official shuttle schedule. If you’re embarking, your line’s transfer is the plan; if you’re exploring, ask at the pier.
Weather turns fast this far south. Pack a waterproof shell and warm layers, even for a short walk — summer here is cool by any U.S. standard.
Confirm with your line where you’ll board, how you’ll get from the airstrip, and whether the new pier is in use for your date. Our embarkation guide and airport page cover the arrival end.

Puerto Williams FAQ
Is Puerto Williams the southernmost city in the world?
By Chile’s definition, yes. In 2019 the INE began counting provincial capitals as cities regardless of population, and Puerto Williams is one.
Ushuaia has long used the same title, and Argentine critics argue a town of under 2,000 people isn’t a city. It’s a definitions argument — not one you need to settle on your trip.
Do cruise ships dock or tender at Puerto Williams?
Industry reporting describes ships using the new pier’s 130-metre berthing head since its first phase. Stage 2 works run until about February 2027.
Silversea notes that Zodiacs are sometimes the only way on or off its expedition ships, so confirm the method for your date with your line.
Which cruise lines sail from Puerto Williams in 2026-27?
Silversea is the one we could confirm on its own site, with round-trip Antarctic voyages from Puerto Williams.
A third-party schedule also lists an HX ship in late October 2026. We couldn’t confirm that on HX’s own pages, so check with the line.
How do I get to Puerto Williams to board my ship?
Silversea’s Antarctica Fly Cruise guests fly by charter from Santiago, per the line; for its round-trip voyages, check what your flight package includes. Independent travellers usually take DAP’s small planes from Punta Arenas, about 1¼ to 1½ hours.
There’s also a ferry from Punta Arenas of roughly 30 to 33 hours, per Chile’s tourism board — scenic, but a lot of time before a cruise.
Can I walk from the ship into town?
We found no published walking distance or time from the new pier to the centre.
The town is small. Even so, check with your line about transfers before you assume a walk.
What’s the museum called now?
The old Museo Antropológico Martin Gusinde reopened on January 10, 2024 as the Museo Territorial Yagan Usi – Martín González Calderón, renamed at the Yagán community’s request.
Older guides and signs may still use the Gusinde name. It’s the same building.
Do I need cash in Puerto Williams?
Yes, bring some Chilean pesos. Chile’s tourism board says not every service here accepts cards.
Is Puerto Williams a good alternative to Ushuaia for Antarctica?
It can be quieter. It’s also much smaller, with fewer flights and a pier still under construction — trade-offs worth weighing, not ignoring.
Choose the voyage first, then the port it uses — not the other way round.
