Tangier Shore Excursions: A Medina at the Pier, a Cape on the Atlantic and the Long Road to the Blue City

In Tangier, the hard part isn’t reaching the sights — the medina starts at the harbor. It’s choosing who walks you through it. A short ship tour runs about 2½ hours. The Cap Spartel loop takes about four, Chefchaouen eats eight or more, and the kasbah on your own costs a 30-dirham museum ticket.

Tangier in 30 seconds: settle the guide first

Known for
The medina and the kasbah above the harbor, the American Legation, and Cap Spartel with the Caves of Hercules on the Atlantic side.
Strongest excursion styles
Short guided medina tours, a half-day loop to the cape and caves, and full-day runs to Chefchaouen, Tetouan or Asilah.
Booking on your own
Workable. Shore Excursions Group lists tours from the cruise port, and the medina is walkable — just know who your guide is before you go.
The one thing to know
Look for the badge. The UK says fake guides commonly approach tourists, and a licensed guide carries official permission.

03

Tangier excursions, from a short loop to the blue city

Ranked by one question: how well does each one get you through the medina with a guide you chose — or give you a good reason to leave it?

Berth, money and entry detail lives on our Tangier cruise port guide. If your ship calls at Gibraltar too, our Gibraltar shore excursion guide covers the Rock across the strait.

Gentlest ship option · about 2½ hours

A short guided Tangier tour through the ship

  • Princess lists 2.5 hours
  • Rated Easy
  • From $74.95
  • Back aboard by early afternoon

For a first visit, a short guided loop does the one job that matters most here — it hands you a guide before anyone at the gate offers one.

Princess sells EASY TANGIER at 2.5 hours, rated Easy, from $74.95. That’s the shortest and lowest-priced of the group tours we saw on its Tangier list — a starter, not a deep dive.

The listing page we read carries no route, so we can’t tell you which lanes or stops it covers. Ask the shore desk before you book it.

What you can count on is the format: a group, a guide and a timed return to the ship, not a route.

Two and a half hours leaves the rest of the call free for a slow wander, on your own, back through the lanes you just saw.

Time commitment
About 2½ hours on Princess’s listing.
Getting there
From the ship.
Suits
First-timers, short calls and anyone who’d like the guide question settled.
Ship or independent
Ship, if your line sells a version.

Why it's worth considering

It’s a low price for a guided start, and the line handles the timing.

You learn the layout early, which makes the free time afterward easier.

The catch

No route is published on the listing, so you’re buying the format, not a known itinerary.

Other lines price and name their short tours differently — compare yours.

Tangier highlights with Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules

  • Shore Excursions Group lists 4 hours
  • $118.99 sale, $138.99 list
  • Small group
  • Leaves from the cruise port

This is the loop most first visits want: the coast first, then the old town, all in a morning.

Shore Excursions Group’s Small Group Tangier Highlights with Hercules Caves and Cap Spartel runs 4 hours from the cruise port. We saw it at $118.99 on sale, $138.99 at list.

The caves sit about 14 km west of the city, at the cape where the Atlantic meets the strait.

Showcaves.com listed cave entry for foreign adults at 60 MAD in 2023, and 25 MAD for children — an old figure, so check whether the tour price covers it.

If you’d rather have the car to yourselves, Shore Excursions Group also sells a private half-day version with the caves at 5 hours, from $69.99 per person.

Time commitment
4 hours small group, or 5 hours private.
Getting there
From the Tangier cruise port.
Suits
First-timers, couples and families who want the coast and the town together.
Ship or independent
Independent, through Shore Excursions Group.

Why it's worth considering

It joins the two things you’d need a car for, the cape and the caves, with the medina you can walk — a neat split of the morning.

Four hours still leaves room for lunch and an hour on your own — on most calls, anyway.

The catch

Private per-person prices depend on group size — read the fine print for two people versus six.

It’s not a ship tour, so the return timing is the operator’s promise, not the line’s.

For American history · about 5 hours

Tangier and the American Legation Museum

  • NCL lists about 5 hours
  • $89 adult, $59 child
  • Moderate activity
  • Includes a Cap Spartel drive

American passengers have a reason to stop here that few ports offer — a US landmark in a Moroccan medina.

The Legation sits at 8 Rue d’Amérique, and Le360 describes it as the one US National Historic Landmark on foreign soil.

NCL’s Tangier & American Legation Museum tour runs about 5 hours, from $89 for adults and $59 for children. It adds a guided medina walk, a scenic drive to Cap Spartel, a snack stop and time to shop.

NCL rates it moderate and says it isn’t recommended for guests with physical limitations — its listing warns of substantial walking over cobblestone streets.

On your own, the museum’s site lists weekday hours of 10:00 to 17:00 and weekends 10:00 to 15:00. Le360 puts entry at 20 dirhams.

Time commitment
About 5 hours on NCL’s listing.
Getting there
From the ship by coach on the NCL tour; on foot through the medina if you go alone.
Suits
Repeat visitors, history readers and US travelers.
Ship or independent
Either.

Why it's worth considering

The Legation tells a story about Morocco and America that a general medina walk tends to skip — a fair reason to give up some medina time.

NCL’s child price makes it workable for families with older kids.

The catch

Le360 says the Legation closes on Sundays, while its own site lists Sunday hours. Check before a Sunday call.

Five hours is a long day for a moderate-rated walk in heat.

The medina and Kasbah Museum on foot

  • Kasbah Museum 30 MAD combined ticket
  • Closed Tuesdays
  • Walk from the ship
  • No booking

You can do the old town without a tour. Just decide how you’ll handle the offers before you start, not halfway up the hill.

The Kasbah Museum of Mediterranean Cultures sits in the Dar al-Makhzen palace on Kasbah Square. One ticket of 30 dirhams covers it and the Kasbah Contemporary Art Space.

Both close on Tuesdays, so check your call date first, not at the door.

The UK warns that people posing as official guides often approach tourists in the medina. A real one carries an official badge and local-authority permission.

Canada’s advice is simpler — keep to the main lanes.

Time commitment
As long as you like. We’d budget a few hours with the museum.
Getting there
On foot from Tanger Ville.
Suits
Budget days, repeat visitors and confident independent walkers.
Ship or independent
Independent.

Why it's worth considering

It costs a museum ticket plus whatever you spend in the lanes — that’s the whole bill.

You set the pace, and the ship stays a short walk away.

The catch

Expect approaches, and expect to repeat a polite no — it’s part of the walk.

The lanes climb toward the kasbah, which makes it harder going for anyone with limited mobility.

Big day inland · 8 to 8½ hours

Chefchaouen, the blue city

  • Princess lists 8.5 hours, Strenuous
  • Princess from $139.95
  • Shore Excursions Group 8 hours, $158.99
  • Long drive inland

Chefchaouen is the photo many people picture when they book Morocco — and it costs most of your port day to reach it.

Princess lists The Blue City of Chefchaouen at 8.5 hours, rated Strenuous, from $139.95.

Shore Excursions Group’s small-group day trip runs 8 hours for $158.99, with pick-up at the port.

That’s a long time on the road for a single town — most of what you see of Tangier will be through the window.

Take it only if the ship is in for a full day and the blue town is the reason you came.

Time commitment
8 to 8½ hours on the listings.
Getting there
From the port; Shore Excursions Group includes port pick-up.
Suits
Active travelers with a long call.
Ship or independent
Lean ship. The distance makes the return guarantee worth more.

Why it's worth considering

On a port day, a tour is the practical way to reach the blue town at all.

Princess’s price is lower than you might expect for 8½ hours — per hour, it’s among the lower fares on its list.

The catch

Princess rates it Strenuous. That’s steep lanes after a long drive.

On an eight-hour call it leaves no margin at all.

Atlantic town · under 5 hours

Asilah on the Atlantic coast

  • Princess lists 4.75 hours
  • Rated Moderate
  • From $104.95
  • Half a day

If Chefchaouen is too far, Asilah is the half-day way to see a second Moroccan town.

Princess sells Asilah: the Atlantic Pearl at 4.75 hours, rated Moderate, from $104.95.

That’s roughly half the time of the blue-city trip, for a little less money — a half day, not a whole one.

The listing we read has no route detail, so ask the shore desk what’s included before you choose it over a Tangier tour.

Time commitment
About 4¾ hours on Princess’s listing.
Getting there
From the ship.
Suits
Repeat visitors and couples.

Ship.

Why it's worth considering

A second town in half a day, with time left in Tangier afterward.

It suits a second visit, not a first.

The catch

You trade Tangier time for Asilah time — on a first visit, that’s usually the wrong trade.

Moderate activity, so it’s not a sit-down tour.

Second medina · 5½ to 9 hours

Tetouan, alone or paired with Tangier

  • Highlights of Tetouan: 5.5 hours, from $189.95
  • Best of Tangier & Tetouan: 9 hours, from $179.95
  • Moderate to Strenuous
  • Princess listings

Tetouan is the pick for travelers who’ve seen Tangier before and want another walled old town.

Princess lists Highlights of Tetouan at 5.5 hours, rated Moderate, from $189.95.

Its Best of Tangier & Tetouan runs 9 hours, rated Strenuous, from $179.95 — longer, oddly, for a little less.

Nine hours is more than many calls allow — check that number before anything else.

Time commitment
5½ or 9 hours on Princess’s listings.

Suits
Repeat visitors with a long call.

Ship.

Why it's worth considering

It’s a different medina from Tangier’s, for anyone on a second Morocco call.

The catch

The 9-hour version won’t fit a short call, and it’s rated Strenuous.

The 5½-hour version costs more than the longer one — read the inclusions to see why.

Tangier with the ship or on your own

For the medina, the guide matters more than the booker

The old town is walkable from Tanger Ville, so the issue is the approach at the gate, not the transport.

A tour booked ahead, through the ship or Shore Excursions Group, means you’ve already answered it.

When the ship tour earns its fare

Chefchaouen and the Tangier-and-Tetouan combination run 8 hours or more. On those, a ship tour’s return guarantee is worth paying for.

For the 4-hour cape loop, the risk is lower. Independent works well if the operator’s timing fits your call — get the return time in writing.

Where the prices sit

Princess’s group day tours that we compared run from $74.95 to $189.95, with a small-group tea and bread experience at $219.95. NCL’s Legation tour starts at $89.

Shore Excursions Group lists group tours from $118.99 and private ones from $69.99 per person. Read what each per-person price assumes — group size changes it.

Short answer

For a first visit, book the 4-hour Cap Spartel and caves loop or your line’s short guided tour, then spend an hour in the kasbah on your own. Repeat visitors should look at the Legation or Tetouan. Choose Chefchaouen only on a full-day call — and through the ship.

What I’d skip in Tangier, and what to check first

A guide picked up at the gate

The UK says people posing as official guides commonly harass tourists in Morocco.

If you do hire one on the spot, ask for the badge and the local-authority permission first, not after the walk.

Chefchaouen on a short call

At 8 to 8½ hours on the listings, it leaves almost no margin.

If your ship is in for eight hours or less, pick the cape loop, not the blue city.

Carrying dirhams back aboard

Canada’s travel advice says it’s illegal to take dirhams out of Morocco.

Change small amounts, keep the receipt, and spend the rest in town.

An unlicensed ride-hail car

The UK warns that app-booked cars may be unlicensed, and police can order you out of one.

Use the terminal’s taxis, and agree the fare or check the meter before you go.

A Tuesday at the Kasbah Museum

Le360 says the museum and the Kasbah Contemporary Art Space both close on Tuesdays.

On a Tuesday call, walk the kasbah lanes and skip the museum, not the kasbah.

Photos of people without asking

The UK asks visitors to get permission before photographing people, especially children.

Ask first, and accept a no — graciously.

06

Tangier port logistics: the dock, the money and the guides

From Tanger Ville into the medina

Shuttle buses and taxis wait at the passenger terminal, and the old town is close enough to walk.

Full port detail is on our Tangier cruise port guide.

Money

Bring a little cash for small buys and tips — bigger shops take cards.

Dirhams can’t legally leave Morocco, so don’t over-exchange.

Museum hours

The Legation’s own site lists 10:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and 10:00 to 15:00 at weekends. Le360 says it’s closed Sundays.

The Kasbah Museum closes Tuesdays. Showcaves.com listed the Caves of Hercules at 10:00 to 21:00 daily in 2023.

Entry

The US Embassy in Rabat lists Morocco at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, for the risk of terrorism (checked October 28, 2026). Check the full advisory and the entry rules on travel.state.gov before you sail, not on the pier.

Tangier shore excursion questions

Do I need a shore excursion in Tangier?

Not to reach the medina — it’s next to the port. Many visitors still want a guide inside it, and for Cap Spartel, Chefchaouen or Tetouan you’ll need transport.

How long is a Tangier city tour?

Princess lists its EASY TANGIER at 2.5 hours. Shore Excursions Group’s small-group tour with Cap Spartel and the caves runs 4 hours.

Can I visit Chefchaouen from a cruise?

Yes, on a long call. Princess lists 8.5 hours and Shore Excursions Group 8 hours, so it uses most of the day.

How do I spot a licensed guide in Tangier?

The UK says to check for an official badge and permission from the local authority. Booking ahead removes the question.

How much do Tangier shore excursions cost?

Examples: Princess’s short tour from $74.95, NCL’s Legation tour from $89, Shore Excursions Group’s cape and caves tour at $118.99 on sale, and Princess’s Chefchaouen from $139.95.

Prices change, so check your date.

Is the American Legation worth visiting?

For US travelers, it’s a strong pick — a piece of American diplomatic history inside a Moroccan medina. Le360 lists entry at 20 dirhams.

Are the Caves of Hercules worth it?

They pair naturally with Cap Spartel, about 14 km west of the city. Showcaves.com listed foreign adult entry at 60 MAD in 2023 — check whether your tour includes it.

Is Tangier good for travelers with limited mobility?

Partly. Princess rates its short tour Easy, but NCL says its Legation tour isn’t recommended for guests with physical limitations, and the medina climbs.

Sources: Princess Cruises’ Tangier excursion listing; NCL’s Tangier & American Legation Museum listing; Shore Excursions Group’s Tangier page; legation.org; Le360 on Tangier’s museums; Showcaves.com on the Caves of Hercules; CruiseMapper and AIVP on Tanger Ville; the UK FCDO and Global Affairs Canada on safety, guides and money — all consulted October 28, 2026.
